Season 4: The Horror, The Horror - Shaun of the Dead (Episode 39)

In the thirty-ninth episode of Season 4 (The Horror, The Horror) Kyle is joined by actor Dan Bauer and novelist Alex Buda to discuss Edgar Wright's immaculate parody and embodiment of George A. Romero style zombie flicks that reflects on the stasis of life and the balance needed for fulfillment in the existential and hilarious Shaun of the Dead.

    49. Hot Fuzz (2007)

    49. Hot Fuzz (2007)

    Yeah Roy!

    Are you a Tight Arse?

We bring the noise this episode and plenty of talking over each other as I welcome old friend Mr Shaun Oshea to our hobbit-sized Mezzanine based studio.

After watching Oshea struggle to take his seat (considering he is particularly svelte now after losing a sizable amount of weight), my heart started its palpitations, and my mind began racing. How would I fit any normal-sized human into the leprechaun-shaped hole Fiona has made for herself these past several months?!

Did Ebert and Siskel have to deal with this kind of shit? Kermode & Mayo look pretty cosy in the BBC studios.

Mr De Niro, it's Ben from FilmFloggers. We'll have to hold off that sit-down chat about Heat; I literally can't fit you in atm.

So Hot Fuzz, nothing's off the table this episode as we delve into a whole host of hot topics.

Including the latest happenings in DW'S tardis (Bradley Walsh, really?), some drunken debauchery tales, and I give Shaun a 'Paddy Considine' must-watch list.
With strict instructions to only be watched when you're feeling down and need something to pop a smile back on your face.

    The list starts with Tyrannosaur...

Emma - The 2020 Film Adaptation

Emma - The 2020 Film Adaptation

This week Catrina and Elle discuss, gush, and awe over the 2020 Emma adaptation starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, and Bill Nighy.

How did this adaptation hold up against the book? Was it more entertaining, or just as boring as some of the novel's chapters? Did the actors get the characters right, or did they miss the mark? Most importantly, did we finally get romance?

From two hosts who weren't big fans of the novel, it might surprise you to hear what they thought of this adaptation.

#038: Ryme City Mysteries: A Look at Detective Pikachu (w/ Stephen)

'We're making a Detective Pikachu movie' is the type of sentence the Generals would have once thought was a punchline to a joke. Then Ryan Reynolds was cast as Pikachu. Then it made over 400 million in worldwide box office. So this week the Generals recruit more help as they venture into Ryme City and finally get a look for themselves at how well Pokemon and humans can live together. Oh and mystery something goes on too. Plus tons of news from DC Fandome!

“Sometimes Always Never” Movie Special (w/ Frank Cottrell-Boyce & Carl Hunter)

“Sometimes Always Never” Movie Special (w/ Frank Cottrell-Boyce & Carl Hunter)

Action! “Sometimes Always Never” is a movie that really moved me; it’s an incredible piece of work, and it was fantastic to get to speak to it’s writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce, and its director Carl Hunter, about the lengthy gestation period the movie went through, and to get a sense of what goes into pulling off a movie like this.

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, the movie stars Bill Nighy, Alice Lowe, and Sam Riley, and deals with themes of kinship, loss, and er, word games. It’s profoundly affecting and has a striking visual identity.

Hope you enjoy it! Let me know what you think!

“Could Do Better” (Savaging Notting Hill)

It's a Showdown! Amy and Sean are going head to head over to Richard Curtis's film Notting Hill, with Alex caught in the middle. Except Alex is too obstreperous to stay above the fray, and Amy and Sean keep agreeing on everything. We can't even argue properly. This week we're looking at character, motivation, embedded sexisms and other isms in Notting Hill (a film from the Dark Ages that we keep finding ourselves arguing over at the pub), and a whole range of random logic holes in films that bear no resemblance to Notting Hill at all. This is peak Word Docs, where there's madness in the method, and we regret everything.

The Old Guard, Palm Springs, Greyhound, First Cow, Family Romance LLC, Sometimes Always Never

Special guest Emily Kubincanek joins us for a marathon of reviews this week, starting with the new Netflix action blockbuster, The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne. Then we loop into Hulu's time-bending rom-com Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. Tom Hanks writes and stars in the new Apple TV+ WWII epic, Greyhound, which just released this week. We slow things down for the meditative First Cow from writer/director Kelly Reichardt. Oh, and Werner Herzog made a new Japanese-language film called Family Romance, LLC. Last, we finish things off with a wordy scramble of a review for the British quirk-film Sometimes Always Never, which stars Bill Nighy and Sam Riley.
