417 | Dara, one baby, miscarriage, thyroid, private obstetrician, birth education, planned caesarean, mother’s group

In today’s episode Dara discusses her choice to have a private obstetrician and the steps she took to educate herself and plan a vaginal birth. Towards the end of her pregnancy she decided that being focussed on one birth option didn’t feel right so she started exploring what an induction, emergency caesarean and planned caesarean may look like. It proved to be a worthwhile practice because at 41 weeks her baby wasn’t engaged and her cervix was long and firm; instead of opting for an induction, she chose to have a planned caesarean which was an incredibly positive experience for her.

    Welcome To The Labor Room!

    Welcome To The Labor Room!

When should I start preparing for birth? Is labor pain really that bad? What do I need to stock up on for postpartum? My baby won't latch. Is my breastfeeding journey doomed? Will I ever sleep again? Are we supposed to know what we’re doing? No? Just checking! But the real question is are we supposed to figure it all out alone? The answer is no.

Welcome, mama. My name is Heather and I am beyond excited to welcome you to The Labor Room podcast. Each week here on the podcast we are going to  be touching on allll the labors of new motherhood because mama, labor doesn’t end in the delivery room.

As a labor and delivery nurse, I used to think that birth was the hardest part. As long as you go with the flow and get through this part, you’ll be fine. But it wasn’t until I had my first baby of my own that I realized that labor and birth was just the beginning of the labors we get to go through with our little ones. And now as a mom of three, it’s become so clear how we, as mothers, often take a back seat with our own needs and we try to go it alone, power through, figure it out when we get there, and we’ve forgotten that not only does it take a village, but that there really is a village out there ready to share their knowledge and experience with us. We’ve just got to be available to listen.

There’s a lot I wish I’d known when I first started having babies. And that’s how A Life In Labor was born. So that I can share with you the lessons I’ve learned and introduce you to people who have expertise in areas that you need more clarity and guidance through.

So as a labor and delivery nurse and mom myself, I have lots of tips and advice for you. I’ve been blessed to help empower thousands of new moms around the world in their journey’s in pregnancy and birth and help them advocate for themselves, reach their goals, and raise their babies. But I don’t expect to go it alone. I’ll be introducing you to experts, professionals, and moms who’ve been there as we answer questions like “how will I know how to push?” “How can I get my baby to sleep at night?” “Is there a trick to increasing milk supply?” and so much more.

The Labor Room podcast is going to be here for you through it all and will help guide you through every step along the way. Here you’ll find mamas who can say “me too” when you want to start your motherhood journey out on the right foot but you need some help figuring it all out. You’re about to learn a lot and start to feel good and confident in pregnancy, birth, and taking care of your little one.

Now’s the time to hit the subscribe button so that you don’t lose this podcast in the sea of information out there. Be sure to keep me in your back pocket to come back to when  you need a little reassurance, guidance, or advice.

Welcome to The Labor Room. As a reminder, anything you hear on this podcast should not be taken as medical advice, please see alifeinlabor.com/disclaimer for more info.

#70 - Birth Better Series- Prepare for Pregnancy and Birth , Informed Decision Making, Meconium, Radical Birth responsibility, Birth Euphoria, Birth stats, Birth Interventions

Birth Education is crucial to a positive , women centric birth experience, every birth worker would say that!

In India, the industrialization of birth is rampant. The wave is being supported by hospitals where the birth classes are often filtered to suit the different commercial scenarios that may be taken into consideration during your Labor. I often, still see a lot of confusion on what birth looks like, "what can I do? Are my fears going to interfere with the process", asked a mother inspite of the preparation from the hospital.". This , in an independent birth preparation set up where your coach has no alignment with the system, is better able to prepare you for birth and postpartum, keeping you and the baby at the center for all scenarios.

    There are so many questions:

Why prepare for birth when I can ask my doctor or family?
Did our previous generation in the cities have positive births, what stories have you heard?
    What is Informed Decision Making?
Who owns the responsibility for the Birth?
What are the interventions that an informed mother and family can decide upon say a meconium stained liquor, need of a surgery , epidural etc
What does Birth Education give you in a nutshell?

We answer all of it in this episode. Tune in to know more!

A home birth with no midwives! KICBUMP with Tracey Beswick

Steph became friends with Tracey through their mother's group - you may remember her from a previous KICBUMP episode titled "Postpartum, poop and prams" with another friend  Emma. In today's episode, Steph wanted to chat to Tracey about something that almost none of us have experienced but so many of us are curious about or at the very least fascinated by - home births.

Tracey's story is just incredible. She birthed her 4 month old son Airlie at home (which was planned), but without any midwives present (which was definitely unplanned)! Hear how she educated herself on home births, what she equipped herself with in the lead up, how she attained her midwives and her advice for any mums looking at this as an option for their birth plan.

And on another note, we love hearing your 'Toddler Tantrum Tales'! If your toddler has cracked it over something hilarious (like not being allowed to eat the dog food or crying over some broken eggs that they sat on) please send yours in to us @kicpod on Instagram. Episode 76 - Hospital Birth & Freebirth with Victoria from @freetobirth

Episode 76 - Hospital Birth & Freebirth with Victoria from @freetobirth

In this week's episode, I am chatting with the lovely Victoria from @freetobirth, who shares the stark difference between her two births. One was a planned homebirth that moved to hospital and the other was a planned homebirth that progressed to a freebirth.

Victoria candidly shares how her lack of birth preparation affected her ability to cope in her first birth experience and she also didn't understand that she could advocate for herself in the circumstances she was in and decline interventions that were offered to her.

Throughout her second pregnancy however, Victoria did a lot more research and felt more empowered to have the birth of her dreams with the support of her partner and doula.

These two very different birth experiences has led Victoria to her setting up her group 'Freetobirth', and she also offers antenatal courses to help others succeed at achieving their dream birth at home - if this is what they are planning.

You can find Victoria on Instagram @freetobirth

How Common is Tearing During Vaginal Birth?

How Common is Tearing During Vaginal Birth?

Tearing during birth is one of the things most of us worry about! I know I did! I also hear many people saying they are trying not to tear without fully understanding how common tearing is and how it happens (in some small way) every time a person gives birth. Today’s question is How Common is a Tear During Vaginal Birth!

      KEY TAKEAWAYS

      • 9 out of 10 pregnant people tear when they’re giving birth for the first time.
      • Tearing is less common when you’re giving birth for a 2nd, 3rd, etc. time.
      • Everyone who pushes a baby out of their vagina has at least micro-tearing that often immediately closes off after delivery.

Episode 56 - Maternity Services Past and Present - With Midwife Sheena Byrom

Episode 56 - Maternity Services Past and Present - With Midwife Sheena Byrom

In this episode, I am chatting to the lovely Sheena Byrom, as she shares her story of working in the maternity system, and what it has been like from the 1970's - to the current day.

Sheena talks of her time as a student, and how her career has led her through many different roles, finally becoming the head of midwifery for a large trust - which included setting up 3 midwife-led units.  Her insights were fascinating, and it wasn't always easy for Sheena as she describes terrible bullying and a 9-year court case that affected her whole family.  She now works hard to bring focus to respectful midwifery care and works alongside her daughter Anna producing valuable resources and information for both midwives and parents.
