#103 - Story Session: From Flaws to Features: Embracing Body Acceptance with Christina Testut

In this special story session, Christina Testut—a kindergarten teacher and champion of body acceptance—joins us this week on The Midlife Feast to share her inspiring un-dieting journey and the lessons that quarantine taught her about embracing body diversity.

She shares why her weight-loss “success story”  became unsustainable, physically, mentally, and emotionally. As a mother and educator, she recognized the urgent need to redefine beauty standards for impressionable young people and took a powerful stand by transforming her epiphany into a children's book celebrating all body shapes and sizes.

#97 - The Impact of Ageism on Body Image in Midlife with Deb Benfield, MEd, RDN

Today we’re tackling a topic we haven’t yet devoted an entire episode to but certainly deserves one!  I’ve invited Nutrition & Body Relationship Coach, Deb Benfield to help us explore the subtle but profound impact of ageism on body image in midlife. We cover so much in this one conversation including aging body liberation, what it means to carry internalized ageism, and how that intersects with disordered eating during midlife.

The episode emphasizes the importance of self-compassion, acknowledging losses, and practicing body acceptance. Deb and I get to express our excitement about this life stage, challenge societal norms, and promote a positive and fresh perspective on aging.

#92 - From Body Grief to Body Acceptance: The Way Forward with Amanda Mittman

You know the overwhelming and even sometimes paralyzing feelings you battle when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror or a photo? It’s when the image we see in front of us doesn’t match the image in our brain. That’s body grief.

In this episode, I’ve invited Registered Dietitian, Amanda Mittman to tackle this subject with me. We’re calling out why body grief has so many layers you might not be aware of, and why it becomes even more complex when the curve balls of perimenopause and aging are added to the mix. While there is a lot to process, you’ll be encouraged to know that you don’t have to stay stuck here either. Amanda shares some incredibly practical strategies for how to move through the pain and into body acceptance, reminding us why it’s just the opposite of just “giving up”.

Learning to Love our Bodies, with Courtney Gioia

Courtney Gioia is the founder of Loyobo, a community for women who are sick of trying to be smaller.  This ISN'T about weight loss for Courtney.  This is about learning how to love your body and feel strong so you can take up space in your body AND in your life.

    AMEN to that!

It was such a joy for me to chat with Courtney and throughout our conversation there were pinnacle points, where Courtney's words hit home and her lived experience shone through.  We are not here, in the non-diet space, saying once you ditch the diet, life is easy.  Far from it.  Thin privilege is real and sometimes finding food freedom and learning to accept your body as it changes, is like swimming upstream. But as Dory says....just keep swimming.

117 - Holiday Self Care Series #2: How to Stay Consistent with Exercise

The holidays are indeed a busy time.

When we’re busy and have lots of additional tasks and social engagements to manage, often the first thing that gets dropped is our own movement practice.

Though it’s easy to feel as if we don’t have time, or can’t justify taking time to exercise when there’s so much else to do, the consequence of putting movement on the back burner is more overwhelm and holiday burnout.

In this episode we’ll help you redefine what’s “enough” and how to take an all or something approach to movement (that’s also joyful) so that you come through the holidays feeling calm and cared for and don’t feel the need to start all over January first.

    Mentioned in the Show:

If you’re a woman who tends to feel overwhelmed and put yourself last during the holidays, but you WANT to prioritize your own wellbeing so that you can roll into the New Year feeling centered, rested and nourished and avoid holiday burn out and New Year’s resolution regret - I have just  the thing for you.

    12. Six Strategies for Nurturing Body Acceptance That Ignite Positive Change

    12. Six Strategies for Nurturing Body Acceptance That Ignite Positive Change

Summer can be a really challenging body image time of year. As the weather gets warmer, diet culture gets even louder and we’re bombarded with an onslaught of messaging about being “summer body ready”.

As the weather gets warmer and clothes get lighter, wearing shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits can trigger anxiety and can cause those struggling with negative body image to avoid some summer activities and experiences that should be enjoyable for everyone. And diet companies and influencers use this as an opportunity to make money off of insecurities.

The term "summer body" is completely problematic because it implies that bodies need to look a certain way in order to be able to enjoy summer. Thank you diet culture! The research is very clear regarding the failure rate of restrictive dieting.

95% of people gain the weight back in 2-5 years.

66% of those gain back even more than they lost.

Not to mention the physical and psychological harm of yo-yo dieting.

To be clear, skinny DOES NOT equal healthy and the never-ending battle to change our bodies to fit within an unrealistic thin ideal is keeping so many stuck in a losing battle and stealing precious time, energy and emotional bandwidth.

Humans were meant to come in all shapes and sizes and that’s a beautiful thing. Society still has a ton of work to do when it comes to embracing and honoring our differences, but we don’t have any more time to waste to start living life to the fullest!

It’s time to start practicing body acceptance now – in the body you currently exist in. In this episode I am diving into what body acceptance truly is and how nurturing body acceptance on your journey to creating a healthy relationship with food and your body will ignite positive changes.

Nurturing body acceptance is NOT about letting yourself go and giving up on yourself. It’s actually quite the opposite and is an act of self-care that when practiced will lead to a greater emphasis on health promoting behaviors. You will learn my top 6 strategies that will help you shift your mindset and behaviors to begin practicing body acceptance in your daily life and show you how these will be a springboard to move you toward making positive changes in your life.
