    #031 - RAMBO - First Blood

    #031 - RAMBO - First Blood

147: Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid? | Tommy Boy (1995)

When we talk about formative movies of my childhood, Tommy Boy is top 3. I wore my VHS tape out and finally we're getting to talk about it here on the pod. I enlisted Jules, my 90s comedy buddy to review this one. And HOLY SCHNIKES!

The both of us had a literal Baja blast talking this iconic comedy buddy road trip film starring legends Chris Farley and David Spade. We could basically quote the entire thing and we spend the first half of the episode talking about the state of comedy past and present, classic SNL casts,  and the literal genius and melancholy of the subject matter.

Off-topic rants include: Anna Nicole doc, the new Barbie movie, and comedy films when we were teens

    First Blood

    First Blood

1982 season continues as Joel and Chris put John Carpenter's The Thing into First Blood!
It's the second part of our Stallone mini-mini-series as we look at the surprisingly low-key first Rambo film and ask the question: masculinity?
Chris is terrified by Australia, Joel does much less Stallone impressions than last time, and we start to put together our pitch for a 'The Thing' cinematic universe. Thingiverse?

First Blood (1982) - Full Review

First Blood (1982) - Full Review

Episode 15 - 1982 was a sleeper year for cinema with some of the most groundbreaking and genre-defining films being released. Sylvester Stallone stars in FIRST BLOOD, the action film that not only broke the mould but with its 2 sequels that were also released in the 80s went a long way to establishing the 80s as the decade of the action film.
There is no doubt that John J Rambo is one of two life-changing roles that created the superstar that is Sylvester Stallone. Some actors work a whole career to find one iconic character to embody and Sly had two and played them simultaneously for the next 37 years.
The Born to Watch team put their spin on this classic movie and surprised even themselves with some of the revelations they came to. FIRST BLOOD is a gripping action thriller that doesn't stop for its whole 97 minutes of running time. An out-and-out blockbuster upon release, it would go on to take over $100 million dollars and spawn 4 sequels, but it's this movie that stands the test of time and is the benchmark for the franchise. Starring Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran. The movie was directed by Ted Kotcheff and is based on the novel written by David Morrell, it also stars Richard Crenna (Trautman) and Brian Dennehy (Teasle).

First Blood is an excellent movie that highlights the struggles of veterans returning from war. Rambo is a sympathetic character who is simply trying to survive but is forced to fight back when pushed too far.
This was a fun episode for the team as they attack an old favourite of theirs. Whitey belts out the Kick Arse Credit Song that could set a new benchmark, Film School tackles Montages and Gow just keeps bringing the heat with his stats.

YNFA 029: Romeo + Juliet, or Mercutio and Tybalt Are Dead… Sexy

YNFA 029: Romeo + Juliet, or Mercutio and Tybalt Are Dead… Sexy

Happy Birthday to us! To celebrate, get strapped and iamb your pentameter as we revel in Baz Luhrmann’s deliciously over-the-top Romeo + Juliet (1996), one of the first episodes we ever recorded—and producer Randall’s personal white whale. Did this soundtrack ever leave your Discman? Are we the biggest Shakespeare dorks who ever lived? Is Harold Perrineau’s Mercutio pure sex in platform heels? (No question he carries this film.) Or is John Leguizamo’s Tybalt the true snack? Don’t get us wrong, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are adorable portraying young love, but we could do with less screaming. Now please excuse us as we listen to The Cardigans on loop.

    ...about 10 (1979)

    ...about 10 (1979)

    Sex and Slapstick masterpiece.

Directed by Blake Edwards. Starring Dudley Moore, Bo Derek, Julie Andrews, Dee Wallace, Robert Webber, Max Showalter and Brian Dennehy. Music composed by Henry Mancini.

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Bryan: A rare treat: A fun, fall down comedy for adults. Huge when it came out. Now no one talks about it. What gives? Blake Edwards is one of the great comedy directors and is so much more than just the guy who made the Pink Panther films. This tale about the failures of mid-life crisis masculinity is really, really funny and ready for a revisit.
