#006: Kitchen Side: How Top Content Creators Build Passionate Audiences
This episode of The Long Game is part of our Kitchen Side series, where we show you behind the scenes discussions, brainstorms, and decision making processes that happen at our content marketing agency, Omniscient Digital.
In this episode, Omniscient Digital’s co-founders Allie Decker and Alex Birkett discuss how to build an audience and a passionate following.
Jimmy Daly, former Content Marketing Director at Animalz, wrote an article called “Your Blog is Not a Publication”. Most blogs won’t develop a big audience of passionate followers who read every post chronologically, but you can certainly set your blog up to be a reference library that answers searchers questions and converts those who are delighted.
The problem, however, is that some creators and businesses can build audiences and can act as publications. In the best case scenario, your blog acts as both a library AND a publication -- think HubSpot, Intercom, CXL, etc.
In most of our client work, we pursue a Barbell Strategy with about 70-85% of our work being driven by the “library” model. We pursue strategic keywords, build links, and hope to convert searchers on individual posts.
However, building and owning an audience is powerful. You’re able to effectively motivate action, change ideas and perceptions about the market, and coral your fans if you have an audience.
The question then remains. How do you actually develop an audience?
Hope you enjoy this episode of The Long Game podcast.

004: Growing an Audience for Your Online Business [James Pierce]
#004 In this episode I sit down with James Pierce who has a lot of experience in many different aspects of business. James has started several blogs of his own and is currently working to build traffic to his main blog, FromClickToSale.
In the episode, we discuss how James has been able to grow a fairly large following in just two months of using Twitter and what is doing to get those followers off of Twitter and onto a platform of his own, his blog.
We also discuss:
- Cheese Curds (#Wisconsin #GoBrewers!)
- Why James chose Twitter to start growing an audience
- Getting outside your comfort zone when getting online
- How James' experience in the freelancing world has prepared him for his own business
And much more!
I had a lot of fun chatting with James on this episode. If you haven't done so already, make sure you go follow James on Twitter (@FromClickToSale) and go check out his blog.

22: Trying to publish a children's book
Alexis wants to publish a children's book she wrote years ago, but is dealing with the big obstacles of trying to get it published. I work with her to relook at the purpose of the book so she can create new ways to get her story "known."

21: PART 1 - Making money from making art
Isyemille is a poet who wants to learn how to make money from selling her art, but feels a conflict about charging people for her work and the negative stigma of capitalism. I show her how selling products to an audience can be about building a connection with them instead of imposing something on them.

#22 Audience-driven product development (in-between-a-sode)
Today’s episode is what we like to call an in-between-a-sode. There are a few days left of the applications for our program, The Side Project Accelerator, so I wanted to quickly discuss one of the core philosophies we teach in the program - audience-driven product development.
This is the methodology that Sagi and I developed and used to build Hacking UI. We believe that this methodology works extremely well for side projects and can ensure that you will come away from each project with a new asset.
In The Side Project Accelerator, we guide you through how to start building your audience, establish your personal brand and get yourself out there - all so you can ensure success with your side project. The next batch starts on November 13th, and If you’d like to join applications are due by November 10th. You can find out more on sideprojectaccelerator.com or visit Hacking UI.
