Episode 401: Powering Through "The Haunting"

Episode 401: Powering Through "The Haunting"

Happy Season 4 Premiere! Since it's Fall, we're kicking off our new season with a seasonally appropriate movie, "The Haunting." It's the 1999 reimagining of the the story originally told in the novel The Haunting of Hill House  by Shirley Jackson, and it's distinctly late-90's. This movie was so over the top that it proved to be great material for Scary Movie 2. We pair it with Sixth Sense Syrah.

    Metacritic Score: 42/100

Movie Sync Notes: We watch a purchased version of "The Haunting" on Youtube. We start "The Haunting" 13:28 into the pod and push play on part two 1:17:35 into the pod.

Chicago (2002): "No Mr. Cellophane Slander"

Chicago (2002): "No Mr. Cellophane Slander"

When we realized our 100th episode of Spooky Tuesday was just around the corner, we knew we had to pick something extra special to celebrate — something fun, something for the girls, something with a lil ✨razzle dazzle.✨ And given that our milestone movie *also* happened to fall on a Fifth Tuesday, a sacred institution, we knew that there was only one film for the job: Chicago (2002). With a star-studded cast, a banger soundtrack, and a generous handful of Oscars, this flick absolutely IS all that jazz, and our podcast lawyer is helping us break it all down.

...about The Terminal (2004) with AJ Gonzalez

...about The Terminal (2004) with AJ Gonzalez

In 2004 Spielberg and Hanks teamed up for “The Terminal” a film that lives up to its name if not its reputation. AJ Gonzalez of The Directors Wall joins the podcast to discuss.

Directed by Steven Spielberg Written by Sacha Gervasi & Jeff Nathanson. Starring Tom Hanks, Stanley Tucci, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chi McBride, Diego Luna, Kumar Pallana, Zoe Saldana, Michael Nouri, & Benny Golson

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Andras Jones: “The Terminal” is a fantastic example of Spielberg’s ability to make an incredibly bleak film and wrap it in so much goodness you don’t even know how sad it is. Meanwhile we’ve got Hanks doing what he does best; bringing unexpected pathos to physical comedy and vice versa. I think most people think of this (if they do at all) as lightweight fluff. It’s anything but.

Seeing Red: Why Taylor Swift Has Us Re-Evaluating Age-Gap Romances

Seeing Red: Why Taylor Swift Has Us Re-Evaluating Age-Gap Romances

In our late teens and early twenties, many of us date someone who is a little or even a lot older as we experiment with romance, but have your feelings about that relationship changed now you look back on it years later?

Perhaps what seemed like fun at the time now feels a bit creepy or even exploitative? This is the very question that singer Taylor Swift is encouraging us to reflect on, through her own experience dating a much older Jake Gyllenhaal when she was just 20.

The Quicky speaks to a relationship expert to consider whether age-gap romances where one person is very young can ever be based on equality, or if the older person is always taking advantage for power, status, or simply their own sexual gratification.

If you love The Quicky and want to share your enthusiasm, please take a moment to vote for us in the category of Listeners' Choice at the Australian Podcast Awards. You can cast your vote here. Voting closes on Sunday 28th November 2021 at 23.59 (AEDT).

The Haunting (1999): "[Owen Wilson Voice] WOW"

The Haunting (1999): "[Owen Wilson Voice] WOW"

We have two and a half words for you: Catherine Zeta-Jones. And then a few more: Owen Wilson saying, “Wow.” If neither of those caught your attention, we’re just not sure how else to sell you on The Haunting — but as another take on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, this haunted mansion movie really takes it there with the strange and sinister set pieces. On a new Spooky Tuesday, we’re thirsting after CZJ, practicing our Owen Wilson impressions, and trying desperately to find a single thread of logic running through this film.
