    IN THIS EPISODE:

    ● [5:22] How did Kate get into fitness and Pilates?

    ● [7:16] What is Pilates?

    ● [9:33] What is true Pilates vs. what you might experience at a gym or hotel class?

    ● [15:42] What information can people look for to know what to expect from a Pilates experience?

    ● [21:04] What does it mean to connect the breath to the movement and your core and pelvic floor?

    ● [23:34] Where does the science come in and where does the methodology stem from for Pilates?

    ● [25:26] Kate walks us through a way to connect to your core and pelvic floor.

    ● [28:45] How does Pilates help you in everyday life?

    ● [32:03] Why do you need a lower amount of reps during Pilates?

    ● [35:16] Kate shares a story about how a client's Mind-Body Connection during Pilates spilled over into other areas of their life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    ● [22:38] The pelvic floor, the core, and the breath are all interconnected and essential for having everyday strength.

    ● [24:22] Pilates is great for everyone! No matter your age, there are benefits that you can get from practicing pilates and it can be customized to what it is you are needing. The intensity can be increased or decreased based on where a person is with their strength and individual needs.

    ● [36:49] Pilates is like the glue for everything else. It’s the glue for everyday life, for the activities you want to do just to have fun, a way to excel and stay fit in the sports you are playing, manage stress, and more. It helps people physically and mentally.

    QUOTES:

[6:03] “I’d torn the meniscus in my knee, I had hamstring injuries, back pain, all the dancer stuff, and I started to heal my own body from doing Pilates, and then went oh my goodness, this system is amazing. If I can heal myself, I can help others.” - Kate Boyle

[14:00] “I’ll get athletes that are wanting to cross train and really expand in their sport. Golf is a great example, it’s all one sided, rotational to one side. So when we build up the strength and stabilization to the other side, they get more power, a better swing, and really excel in their game.” - Kate Boyle

[14:53] “Even people where their mobility isn’t as great anymore, and it might be as simple as trying to reach up to that top cupboard is getting really hard because they're getting really stiff through their shoulder, we can really work on that shoulder range and strength, so just everyday movements become easier.” - Kate Boyle

[30:50] “You are learning how to move while being present with your body. So many other exercises we do, we’ll jump up a treadmill, stick the headphones on or turn the TV on and start walking and running away and we’re thinking about the shopping we’ve got to do and the kids we’ve got to pick up. In Pilates you can’t do that because then you’ll lose your breath or what your movement’s doing, how many reps you’ve done, so it means for your workout, you actually have to be present in your body.” - Kate Boyle

[32:25] “I think that’s a different sort of mindset as well, so many other modalities were like no, no, no, you’ve got to do your 10 or your 20 and you’ve got to push through. Whereas Pilates is very much no, no, no, your body is telling you this is just too hard. Right now, we’re going to start gripping the opposite muscles that shouldn’t be activating, so we’re going to hold our breath to get through, we’re going to brace those abs. So rather than doing that, where we’re not getting any benefits, take a short five second rest and then continue if you can.” - Kate Boyle

"You can strengthen your body in a way that's both supportive and restorative." - Jenn Trepeck

Why Not Wellness -Unlocking the Power of Pilates

Why Not Wellness -Unlocking the Power of Pilates

     Unlocking the Power of Pilates

    Discovering Pilates:

Unveiling the complexity behind Pilates exercises, our seasoned instructor with over 15 years of experience emphasizes its deceptive difficulty. Pilates, born in the early 20th century for rehabilitation, combines low-impact with high-intensity workouts through various apparatuses, ensuring effectiveness without stressing the body.

    Mind-Body Connection:

Pilates, often described as a “slow, controlled exercise,” focuses on the mind-body connection and breath work. Versatile and calming, it enhances flexibility, strength, and posture, addressing individual weaknesses, whether in strength or flexibility.

    Contemporary vs. Classical Pilates:

Distinguishing between Contemporary and Classical Pilates, the choice often hinges on the instructor. While equipment and styles may vary, mat and reformer exercises are foundational. The classical approach, like our instructor’s certification, tailors routines to the individual, incorporating modifications as needed.

    Pilates or Yoga:

Addressing the perennial question of Pilates vs. Yoga, the emphasis lies on core strength. Pilates is a superb foundation for building core strength, complementing other activities, including Yoga. The synergy between Pilates and Yoga enhances overall well-being.

    Finding the Right Instructor:

Choosing a Pilates studio or instructor involves thorough consideration. Recommendations from friends, family, or colleagues provide valuable insights. A personal conversation with the instructor, coupled with an assessment, ensures a tailored and safe Pilates experience.

    Beginner’s Guide to Pilates:

Accessible to all, including those with injuries or pregnant women, Pilates offers a holistic approach. Starting with a private lesson provides a solid foundation, minimizing the risk of injury. Personal comfort with the instructor is paramount; speak up if something feels amiss.

Pilates at Home and Injury Prevention:

For those on a budget, home Pilates is an option, but caution is advised. While free online resources abound, the lack of monitoring increases the risk of injury. Pilates, a rewarding journey, contributes to both physical and mental well-being.

    Closing Thoughts:

As we wrap up, remember that everyone deserves to feel good in their bodies. The right instructor can make all the difference. So, embark on your Pilates journey, enjoy the benefits, and, as our instructor shares, sometimes finding the perfect fit can transform your life.

Sarah King ~ The ELDOA method

Sarah King ~ The ELDOA method

Have you heard of a Method called ELDOA? This modality was created by world-renowned osteopath, Guy Voyer who designed it to help bring the body into balance and to heal the spine. Our guest today, Sarah King is a Pilates teacher who teaches Guy Voyer's work  to classical Pilates teachers in Berlin, Germany. Sarah has a manual therapy background so it’s no wonder she was drawn to another type of modality that has hints of yoga but also offers it within an osteopathic framework.

Carla Harris ~ Executive Director, Pilates Method Alliance

Carla Harris ~ Executive Director, Pilates Method Alliance

The Pilates Method Alliance had its beginnings in 2001.  Kevin Bowen and Colleen Glenn, both Pilates teachers, shared a mutual interest in preserving Joe’s Method. So they invited Pilates teachers, including the First Generation - Ron Fletcher, Mary Bowen, Kathy Grant, Lolita San Miguel and even Romana Kryzanowska, though she didn’t attend. Also, equipment company owners, Ken Endelman and Moria Stott. They all met in Miami, Florida to form an organization and they set out to create a curriculum that would be the industry’s standard for certifying potential Pilates teachers. The PMA has had its ups and downs but has managed to survive for these last two decades. Enter Carla Harris. Hired in 2021 to step into the executive director role, Carla is determined to take the PMA in another direction that is more reflective of today's Pilates community.

Roberta Gratz ~ Co-Owner of Gratz Industries (Rebroadcast, 2018)

Roberta Gratz ~ Co-Owner of Gratz Industries (Rebroadcast, 2018)

My guest today is Roberta Gratz, co-owner of Gratz Industries and wife of the late Donald Gratz, whose father Frank along with a business partner opened a custom metal fabrication business Treitel/Gratz in New York City in the 1920’s. When Mr. Tretial moved on, Frank renamed the business Gratz Industries, Inc. and continued to fabricate sculptures, metal furniture and produce industrial design prototypes for many of the worlds top designers. Donald, Frank’s younger son joined his father after finishing college and a stint in the Army.  At one point in the mid 1960’s one aspect of their metal furniture business began to slow down leaving room for a unique but untested type of business.
On a serendipitous afternoon in 1968, Donald while delivering a metal furniture piece to one of his customers met Romana Kryzanowska at his customer’s home. Romana had needed a manufacturer for her apparatus as more and more teachers were arriving at her studio eager to learn Pilates from her and then needing apparatus to work on at home. It was this fortuitous meeting with Romana that opened a new line of business for Gratz Industries, located at that time in Long Island City, Queens - it was the birth of classical Pilates apparatus.

Karen Moran ~ Physical therapist and CEO of Fusion Arts Physical Therapy

Karen Moran ~ Physical therapist and CEO of Fusion Arts Physical Therapy

The Feet. Ugh, love ‘em or hate ‘em, we’re stuck with them. Many people experience foot pain and may not know what to do about it, but Joe Pilates understood what to do, in fact, he invented two small devices to help correct the feet. The foot corrector and the Toe exerciser or sometimes referred to as the Toe Gizmo, were designed to strengthen and make supple the very foundation of our skeleton.

I’ve asked our guest today, Karen Moran, a physical therapist to explain from her perspective how the feet play a major role in developing and maintaining a healthy functioning body. Karen is the founder and CEO of Fusion Arts Physical Therapy in Los Angeles, CA., where she specializes in Dance Medicine. Theaters such as the Pantages, the Ahmanson, Mark Taper, and various other theaters in the Los Angeles area have employed her to keep their performers healthy. In addition, Karen has treated professional dancers in companies such as Los Angeles Dance Project, Los Angeles Ballet and Hubbard Street Dance.

Joseph DeRuvo ~ Pilates Apparatus innovator & Photographer

When a Pilates conversation happens especially with those who have only heard bits and pieces about the method, usually there is nervous laughter about bodies contorting on torturous contraptions. But all that changes when someone begins a Pilates program and is introduced to this brilliant system. They get to work on fun apparatus like the reformer, the different chairs and barrels and even the Cadillac.

There are a number of Pilates apparatus companies supplying studios and individuals, but newer Pilates companies have entered the market. Many of these companies replicate the existing Pilates designs. In this episode, Joseph DeRuvo who has practiced and taught the Pilates method for over 10 years, recognized a need to redesign lighter weight and more affordable equipment.

Her dance teacher at the time suggested that she try the Pilates method to help heal her knee and Lori learned of Romana Kryzanowska in New York City.
Lori was fascinated by Pilates and so curious about what was under the skin, she thought physical therapy would pair beautifully with Pilates and decided to go to physical therapy school. She graduated with a Masters in physical therapy and the following year, Lori moved to Seattle for an opportunity to open the first Pilates Teacher Training Center in the Pacific Northwest.

The Reformer, the most enduring and popular Pilates apparatus our genius mentor, Jospeh Pilates invented. Originally named, the Universal Reformer, this piece in the Pilates line-up was first built by the inventor himself and his brother, Fred.  As the Universal Reformer gained more attention, the demand for it became greater.  Romana Kryzanowska, one of Mr. Pilates’ most devoted disciples, continued his teachings on his apparatus at the NYC original studio after Joe passed away.  Then in the late 1960’s a fortuitous meeting with Donald Gratz, a metal installation and furniture company owner would set in motion the next generation of apparatus, including the reformer.

Now, in 2019, there is yet, another iteration of the classical Pilates reformer, this time, manufactured by Balanced Body, a leader in the Pilates apparatus industry.  My guest today is Ana Caban  who is the Balanced Body Brand Ambassador for the new Contrology reformer.
