    Welcome to the Natural Super Kids Podcast! In today's episode, we're diving deep into a controversial topic – Australian Dietary Guidelines. For this episode, we will be looking at three specific guidelines: The National Health and Medical Research Council’s Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, Nutrition Guidelines for School Tuck Shops, and Health Direct’s Healthy Eating for Kids. 

    Australian Dietary Guidelines are once again sparking discussion because one of our members in the Natural Super Kids Klub encountered a surprising roadblock when submitting a Bliss Balls recipe to her child's school tuck shop. The recipe, which included coconut oil, was deemed a "red food" and rejected due to school canteen guidelines favouring vegetable oils over natural, solid oils like coconut oil.

    In this episode, I will discuss:

    • The challenges faced by parents when it comes to meeting their kids’ nutritional needs;
    • Flaws in Health Direct's Guide on Healthy Eating for Kids:
      • Emphasis on a large amount of cereal and grain foods;
      • Does not consider adequately consider new research on saturated fats;
      • Preference for processed vegetable oils over healthy natural oils;
      • The misinformation around coconut oil and its surprising benefits on HDL cholesterol.
    • Specific issues identified with the Guidelines for Healthy Foods and Drinks Supplied in School Canteens;
      • Perplexing categories used: green, amber, and red;
      • The use of intense sweeteners in “green” drinks;
      • Preference for vegetable oils rich in Omega-6 fatty acids and the implications on children’s health;
      • Omission of essential fat-soluble nutrients when opting for low-fat dairy;
      • Banning salt in school lunches, despite its necessity in nutrient balance.
    • What’s missing in Australian Dietary Guidelines, and where the focus should be redirected;

    Dr. Mary T. Newport practiced neonatology in Florida for 30 years and served as founding medical director for two newborn intensive care units in the Tampa Bay area. Her focus shifted in 2008 when she somewhat famously found a nutritional intervention that supplied ketones as alternative fuel for the brain for her husband Steve Newport with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Steve responded dramatically to consuming medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) from coconut oil which produce ketones when consumed. She is author of several books, including The Complete Book of Ketones: A Practical Guide to Ketogenic Diets and Ketone Supplements, and her latest book,  Clearly Keto: For Healthy Brain Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention, which came out in November of 2022! Dr. Newport is also an international speaker on the subject of ketones as an alternative fuel for the brain, with numerous speaking engagements around the world, and is a Certified Ketogenic Nutrition Specialist (CKNS), a program offered by the American Nutrition Association.

    In many ways this poem can be analyzed by how it ends: by examining the contents of organic shops. Roshni Goyate looks at one such item — coconut oil for hair —  and considers its long line of history in her British-Indian family. As a child, she was shamed by classmates for using coconut oil in her hair, but now it’s double the price in shops. In a cruel irony, her race and culture were both hypervisible to those who taunted her and rendered invisible by those same people who invalidated her presence and citizenship.

    Roshni Goyate is one quarter of the 4 BROWN GIRLS WHO WRITE poetry collective. Together they have published a book of poetry, a zine of essays, and most recently, a collection of solo works, published by Rough Trade Books, in which Roshni's pamphlet, Shadow Work, appears. Roshni is a Londoner, proud daughter of Indian immigrants and co-founder of The Other Box, an inclusion and equity company.

    This is a great podcast if you want to learn the real reason you have a thyroid condition or if you think you have a thyroid condition but your blood work is normal.  There are so many natural things to do and to actually avoid for better thyroid health that Dr. Armitstead shares in this podcast.  She explains the need to stay away from pesticides, artificial sweeteners, low fat diets (or diets high in the wrong fats), why you don't eat certain foods raw, and why it's important to avoid soy, sugar, and highly refined, processed and packaged foods if you want to heal the thyroid.
