Film Listology: #93 - Annie Hall

Film Listology: #93 - Annie Hall

The Film Listology season continues with a welcome break from recent genre form.  Garret Castleberry and Scott McMurry revisit Woody Allen's Academy Award Winner for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay from 1977, Annie Hall. The film captured the hearts of film critics and belongs in the pantheon of great "New York movies". Indeed, much of writer-directer Allen's oeuvre became synonymous with a handful of directors forever linked to New York City and their filmic relationship to this vibrant city of tomorrow. Ironically, some of the offscreen choices made by Allen over time have altered the relationship between his expressed ideas, his films as art, film audiences, and their reception versus rejection of his work. Do external factors impact the film's cultural significance, or can the film's haughty whimsy elude critique? The dialogic duo debates to arrive at a contemporary interpretation of Annie Hall and its film legacy.

    Hosts: Garret Castleberry, Scott McMurry

Producers: Garret Castleberry, Will McMurry (Audio Engineer), Alli Garner (Cover Art), Austin Foster (Music)

Justin Kirkland on 'The Family Stone'

Justin Kirkland on 'The Family Stone'

When it comes to the many characters of sleeper Christmas favorite The Family Stone, writer and podcaster (John Dutton Must Die: A Yellowstone Podcast, My Year With Dolly) wishes he could identify as an Amy. But he sees himself instead as a Julie – as in Claire Danes character, the sister who rushes in to save the day and somehow manages to charm the insular Stone family. He tells Jordan about that affinity and why he will go to bat for the manic pixie dream girl.

Then, Jordan has one quick thing about Love Lies Bleeding.

    The Godfather Part II [1974]

Jackie and Greg pull up a seat at the lake house for their episode on Francis Ford Coppola's THE GODFATHER PART II from 1974. Topics of discussion include comparisons to the first film, how it pioneered the movie sequel, the more muted palette yet more sprawling canvas, and how Nino Rota's score is even more powerful the second time around. Is it that rare sequel that bests the original? You'll have to listen to find out.

143: It's the 90s, plastic surgery is like good grooming. | The First Wives Club (1996) [Patreon Unlocked]

There are only a handful of films that I can quote by heart and don't even need to watch to be able to talk about. The First Wives Club, the 1996 sleeper but box office hit is that film for me and my friends Mikey and Charles.

We love this story so much that it has been burned into our brains for most of our adult lives. Throughout the episode we question why a film about divorced women really spoke to us at age 13, which woman we identify with, and just basically quote the entire film.

Go rent , go buy, go watch this film immediately.

    The Family Stone

    The Family Stone

Jordan and Brooke return to the semi-cursed land of Christmas rom-coms for this 2005 curio. It's part romance, part screwball comedy, part cancer drama (yes, really), with some very well-drawn gay characters and a truly deranged SJP performance. Plus they cover hits and misses of past AARP Movies for Grown-Ups Awards, how Rachel McAdams is somehow *still* underrated, when to avoid politics at the dinner table, and why we should all "LOVE THE GAYS!!!"
