Can A Food Product Scoring System Improve Our Diet And Eliminate Nutrition Confusion? with Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian

This episode is brought to you by Cozy Earth, InsideTracker, Pendulum, and Pique.

When it comes to diet, there's so much changing and conflicting information flying around that it can feel impossible to know where to look for sound advice. Decades of nutritional misguidance, lobbying, and corrupt food policies have only left us more confused when we head to the grocery store.

Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I talk to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian about Food Compass, a new food rating system aimed to help determine the general healthfulness of different foods and cut through the confusion when it comes to our food choices.

Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian is a cardiologist, Special Advisor to the Provost, Dean for Policy, and Jean Mayer Professor at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy; and Professor of Medicine at Tufts School of Medicine. His work aims to create the science and translation for a food system that is nutritious, equitable, and sustainable.

Dr. Mozaffarian has authored more than 500 scientific publications on dietary priorities for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and on evidence-based policy approaches and innovations to reduce diet-related diseases in the US and globally. He has served in numerous advisory roles, and his work has been featured in a wide array of media outlets. Thomson Reuters has named him as one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds.

Eggs: are they good for me?

Eggs are nutrient-dense and have a long shelf life. Compared with many other protein sources, they’re on the cheaper side. But they’re not as popular as they used to be. And a lot of this comes down to a debate about cholesterol.

How Having Variety In Your Diet Creates Health

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Athletic Greens, and InsideTracker.

It can be easy to fall into a food rut, eating the same things week in and week out. Consuming a variety of foods not only adds more excitement to your meals, but it’s also essential for expanding the nutritional diversity of your diet. There are thousands of phytochemicals, also called phytonutrients, found in whole foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, spices, and tea, among many other things. These natural compounds create a variety of colors in our plant foods and signal various benefits.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. William Li, Dr. Jeffrey Bland, and Dhru Purohit about why having diversity in your diet and eating a range of colorful produce is the ideal way to promote optimal health.

Dr. Li is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease—The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases, including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity.

Dr. Jeff Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature’s greatest innovations—the immune system. A nutritional biochemist by training, Jeff began in academia as a university professor. Jeff then spent three decades working alongside other pioneers in the natural products industry. In 1991, he and his wife, Susan, founded the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2012, Jeff founded another educational nonprofit called the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute.

Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. Is Leaky Gut, Magnesium Deficiency, Or Diet Causing Your Migraines?

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Thrive Market, and InsideTracker.

Migraines are very common and, for many people, they can be debilitating, reducing the quality of life. Some may be so severe that the only option for getting through them is to rest in a dark room. The Functional Medicine approach to treating migraines looks beyond the head to assess the health of the entire body and find the root cause.

In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Todd LePine to explore various ways we can use this approach to eliminate migraines. We discuss healing the gut and dietary changes, and I also speak about how low levels of magnesium have been linked to migraines.

Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing.

Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is board certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine certified practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires and is a fitness enthusiast.

    Ep 108 Gout: Toetally fascinating

    Ep 108 Gout: Toetally fascinating
Although today we tend to think about diseases in terms of signs and symptoms, tests and treatments, that hasn’t always been the case. For much of history, diseases carried with them a deeper meaning beyond the pathophysiological processes leading to their development. A diagnosis was as much about the identity and personality of an individual as it was about the disease itself, and this was especially the case for the topic of today’s episode: gout. But before we get into the tangled history of this “monarch among maladies”, we first break down its biology and possible evolutionary origins. Once we have a solid understanding of this crystalline illness, we turn our attention to the changing perceptions of gout over time and why gout was once a welcomed diagnosis, in sharp contrast with so many other diseases. Finally, we take stock of gout around the world today, no easy feat. Tune in for a fascinating deep dive into this incredibly common but often overlooked illness. Learn more about your ad choices. Today I have not one but two urology consultants on the podcast! Dr Nish Bedi, who some of you may remember from the podcast we recorded a couple of years ago titled “eat for your bladder” and Dr Matthew Bultitude, a surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital in London.

Today we’re talking all things kidney stones, a topic requested by a number of followers and colleagues who asked for advice on this via social media and my newsletter.

    We’ll talk about:

What types of stones are there

The impact of hydration, sugar, animal protein, salt and fibre on stones

    How do we prevent them

What things should one include or exclude depending on their condition

    Supplements for stones

Acidification and Alkalinisation of the urine and what this means clinically

This is a fascinating discussion and on that you can also watch on YouTube on the doctor’s kitchen channel. Please do share this information widely as I’m sure it will be absolutely helpful and game changing for many people out there, especially considering the 10% of the population will suffer with a kidney stone.

Matthew Bultitude is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital in London. He is a general urologist and has a specialist interest in kidney stone disease. He has an interest in metabolic stones and in particular a rare condition called cystinuria which predisposes to lifelong kidney stones. He runs a rare disease website for patients with this condition - www.cystinuriaUK.co.uk. At Guy’s he has been clinical lead for his department and is currently the Clinical Director for transplantation, nephrology and urology.

Dr Nish Bedi is a consultant urologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and is passionate about bringing more specific dietary and lifestyle advice for some urological conditions. He is extensively published and regularly speaks at international conferences.

Growing up, Danielle Walker’s family often convened for big meals prepared by her Italian grandmother, Grandma Marge. Back then, Danielle enjoyed a wide variety of food without restriction; but she began experiencing severe abdominal pain in her 20s that ultimately led her to totally transform her diet—cutting grains, lactose, sugar and more.

As Danielle found relief in this approach—and realized that others with similar ailments could as well—she began compiling her recipes in an online blog called Against All Grain. Before long, the self-taught chef became a bestselling cookbook author, more recently branching out with her own product lines and cooking courses.

This week on How I Built This Lab, Danielle talks with Guy about being an ‘accidental entrepreneur’ as she chronicles her journey to building a multifaceted business centered around healthy eating. Plus, Danielle shares her advice for other creators looking to build an audience and discusses food’s potential to help millions suffering from autoimmune diseases.
