247 Kevin Ann Jordan "Style Coach and Sustainable Style"

247 Kevin Ann Jordan "Style Coach and Sustainable Style"

Kevin Ann Jordan@tailoredstylist has been helping women get dressed since age three, starting with her younger sister. Growing up in a remote mountain town in California, she didn't have a lot of exposure to the fashion world but she loved the bi-annual school clothing shopping trips and reading fashion magazines. Kevin has always wanted to help people, and after a corporate career in the healthcare industry, she realized that she could help women on an individual level through styling. Starting at Stitch Fix, Kevin was trained as a virtual stylist and later started her own business, cultivating a roster of clients around the world from Sydney to New York to Vancouver.

Always practical, Kevin disliked the amount of waste created by the fashion industry, including the amount of low quality clothing piling up in women's closets. With a mantra of quality over quantity, Kevin began to discover the sustainable fashion movement. Starting in her own closet, Kevin learned just how bad our clothing, and consumerist culture is for the planet, its people and animals.

Today, Kevin makes it her mission to help the planet one closet at a time through her one-on-one work with clients, as well as the Sustainable Style Club she launched in 2022. Kevin is spreading the message about buying less, recycling more, curating mindful, beautiful closets and wearing clothes that make us feel great, without compromising the planet.

She’s my guest this week and shares a million good ideas about how to think about what you're wearing and how it impacts the environment starting with understanding your style manifesto, to buying less, re-imagining your clothes and how to recycle them. Her work is truly quite transformative, and I am excited to share this conversation with you.

Here are some of the resources and companies Kevin talked about on the show today: Good On You app and website Goodonyou.eco, ForDays - takeback bag, Marine Layer, Smartwool, Nisolo Everlane,Outerknown,Madewell, Eileen Fisher and Patagonia.

Today’s show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.

Together they have created an amazing award winning (really) dental laboratory (https://www.thehivedental.co.uk/the-dentistry-awards-2021/) in Dorset, UK. Emily is a Clinical Dental Technician (think denturist) and Eleanor is the mastermind behind the business and marketing. They talk about creating The Hive, taking it mobile during the pandemic, setting it up to see patients directly, and making sure they are giving back to the environment.

    Glaw Lake with Akanksha Siwach

    Glaw Lake with Akanksha Siwach

WINNER OF GIVEAWAY FROM NASHIK EPISODE

    RIKIN MERCHANT

This week, The Musafir Stories speaks with Akanksha Siwach, solo traveller, amateur gardener and a terrific storyteller who blogs at https://talesofthehiddentrails.wordpress.com

Today's destination: Glaw Lake, Arunachal Pradesh

    Nearest Airport: Dibrugarh Airport, DIB

Nearest Railway Station: New Tinsukia Railway Station, NTSK

Prerequisites - Inner Line permit, Permit for the trek/camping

Packing - Pack light, good shoes/gumboots, rucksack, tent, sleeping bag and SALT - watch out for those leeches!

Time of the year - October - March

Length of the itinerary: 2 days

    Itinerary Highlights:

Akansha takes us on a trek to the mystical Glaw lake in Arunachal Pradesh. Glaw lake is situated in the Wakro town of eastern Arunachal Pradesh, in the Lohit district - a sparsely populated region, still pristine with flora and fauna.

The lake is situated in the middle of Kamlang Tiger reserve, close to the Burmese and Tibetan border. The reserve is filled with thick forests full of exotic plants and animals - plantains, dry fruits like Chahal, oranges, elephant apple, butterflies, gibbons, the Great Indian hornbill, Himalayan monals among others.

Akanksha’s guide was a local student from Arunachal - Bethem, who helped navigate through this 7-8 hour trek (one way). Important pit stops include the forest hut, the suspension bridge over the Lohit River, trekker’s hut in Kalai among others.

Legend goes that Glaw lake welcomes anyone visiting the lake for the first time and is welcomed by showers, which was true in Akanksha’s case as well. Another legend goes that no one ever drowns at the Glaw (also no one swims at the Glaw!) and the lake never gets dirty!

The team arrives at the site of the lake just after noon, and spends time exploring around the lake. The team also meets up with a couple of local Miju Mishmi fishermen who help with breakfast the following day.

Akanksha and team also get a chance to share a meal with the fishermen and try out some of the local food. The views of the Glaw lake the following morning at sunrise are something to treasure - the mystical lake covered with mist and crystal-clear water as the first rays of the sun shine on the camping area. Akanksha also has a chance to go on a short boat ride on a raft made by the fishermen.

Miju Mishmi are one of the prominent tribes of the north east and are a very hardy people surviving on the resources from the mountains and forests. Akanksha shares some background about the tribe and their ways of life.

Akanksha also shares further details about places in the vicinity that one could visit, including Parashuram Kund, Walong, Namti plains, Golden pagoda and a few more places in the vicinity
