Why You're So Scared Of Living Life - Trauma w/ Anthea

Why You're So Scared Of Living Life - Trauma w/ Anthea

Ever wonder why you're scared to travel alone? Why you don't trust strangers? Why the thought of a certain person, thing, or place makes you uncomfortable? Why you avoid certain topics? Why you're triggered if someones asks you a specific question?

In December 2020 when I quit my job, emptied my apartment, packed my bags, and brought a one way ticket out of the US I thought I was going on vacation, but life had other plans and turns out I was going on a journey to heal. I'm not mad about it either because who wouldn't want to heal around the world?!

Trauma is universal -- We think of it in extreme cases; rape, molestation, physical abuse, but it can be as simple as seeing something that stays with you for the entirety of your life.

On this episode I'm learning with Anthea Taeuber, founder of The Healing Quotient, a non profit organization that provides therapy grants to individuals from marginalized communities that cannot afford a specific kind of therapy called EMDR. The Healing "Quo"  creates a trauma informed community with free guided yoga, meditation, and journaling. After experiencing her own trauma at the age of 22 on a solo travel trip and working through her own healing, Anthea has dedicated the last 3+ years of her life to helping others on their journey of healing.

How can we stop waiting and start healing? Let's talk trauma!

I am so excited for this new season of @sw4friday podcast! So many guests from all around the world sharing and dropping so many gems 💎

Episode 13: Expat Parenting Language Expectations

Episode 13: Expat Parenting Language Expectations
In this episode, I dive deep into my experience as a first-time expat parent figuring out how to support my children in their acquisition of the community language while I learned it alongside them. Our early years learning Italian were rife with fighting, negotiating, and bribing when it came to learning Italian. I constantly felt like I was failing, and I was failing my kids. But the more those negative feelings crept up, the more I pushed myself and my kids to work harder and do more. In hindsight, it's easy to see that I wasn't failing. I just had the wrong expectations in every aspect of our language lives. I had expected myself to learn Italian quickly and be able to speak it at home with my children. I expected my very young kids to be excited about learning another language, do language activities as I dictated them, and take command of their own language journeys. I expected immersion alone to make us fluent, and I expected our community to meet us where we were. I thought native speakers around us would all be patient with us as we learned, jump at the chance to help teach us, and adjust their conversational lives to cater to us. Over time, as our language lives became too overwhelming and stressful, I realized that the way I approached my children's language journey (and my own) wasn't sustainable. I was doing more damage than good, and it all came down to my expectations. In this episode, I discuss how changing these expectations was a dramatically positive (and necessary) turning point for our family. My kids are responding to my change of expectations, and they're genuinely excited now to learn German, our new community language. They're making incredible progress in both the language and in school, and the entire mood of our household is lighter and happier. This is the language journey I wish I'd tapped in to years ago when we first set foot in Italy, but it's never too late to analyze and alter one's language or parenting expectations. David - Real life examples for reaching your goals and dreams overseas

David - Real life examples for reaching your goals and dreams overseas

David, who is originally from the United States, grew up fond of the Japanese culture and even made an effort to learn the language itself. With his tremendous interest in the country, he was motivated to find ways to start his journey outside of the US and eventually live in his dream country. But before everything else, David also managed to work across different cities in the US. Despite enjoying life in these cities, nothing could surpass his hunger to be in Japan.

With many job applications to get a position in Tokyo, David's perseverance to fulfill his dream was on the next level, and he finally did it. Though living in Japan was a surreal experience for David, his story, like everybody else, was not meant to be complete comfort.

He shared how his struggles from building valuable relationships to his career challenges brought him to Japan, then Germany, until he settled in Portugal with his Japanese wife. With his rejections and successes over the past years of moving countries, David sure has a lot to impart on those who want to follow the same path, which is why he started his platform Expat Empire, intended to help people who want to move abroad too. He is indeed a living example of perseverance and resilience, proving that when you put more than 100% into reaching your goal, there will be no room for failure, just some redirection, and eventually success.

    NEED HELP TO MOVE ABROAD?

Leaving your country, family and friends can be very scary. On top of that, there's a lot of uncertainty. "What am I going to do when I get there? Can I afford it? How can I find a job? What visa do I need?" Those were some of the questions I asked myself when I left my country. Now 8 years, 2 countries later and many interviews with people who've done it, I can help you do the same. Affiliate mentioned in this episode: Wise

Most of our audience are expats and I know for me, the most frustrating thing was moving my finances to a whole different country. Even though I still have bills back home, it was so hard to get money from euro to dollars and back again. But Wise fixes that problem.

They allow you to have a multi-currency account. So you can get paid in your currency, whether that's euros or over a hundred other different currencies and pay for things either with your debit card or bank account information for particular countries.

This is really helpful because most banks and Western Union have fees that are huge.

So you're just trying to pay one little bill or send some money home and a big portion of that goes to fees to the bank.

    Why should you do that?

Try Wise and see if you can fix that problem. Go ahead and try out Wise as a resource recommended by Clever Hybrids.

Louise - Moving to Portugal in her 50s

Growing up in Australia, Louise got surrounded by people her age that immersed themselves in exploring the world. At 22, Louise left Australia for the US. While the majority of her peers went for Europe, Louise's mindset was to take another path.

From the US, she reached Canada, then Mexico, and finally London, where she worked as a chef in a ski resort. After eight months, Louise wanted to continue her studies, which led her back to her home country. However, the urge to explore the world tormented her, so after finishing one semester in Australia, Louise hopped off to Colorado.

The moment she stepped into the departure gate, she knew that home was not in Australia. After 27 years in the US, Louise moved to Portugal and has been working on her book, which shares immigrants' stories.

At 50 years old, Louise still plans to leave Portugal and move to another country, which she can soon hopefully call her home.

    Culture Shock with Andrea Heiliger

    Culture Shock with Andrea Heiliger

My guest on this week's podcast is Andrea Heiliger. There are plenty of adjectives to describe Andrea - artistic, caring, spunky, brave, witty, smiley, dedicated, and adventurous are a few that come to mind. If you're ever having a bad day, she's the person you want to call because she makes everyone feel welcome when you're in her presence.

Andrea was born and raised in Nebraska but isn't quite sure where she caught the exploration bug. It may have started with her artistic talent combined with technical drawings that took her to archeological digs in Israel. Traveling is one of her passions and she definitely knows how to go with the flow no matter the circumstances. Most people try and make lemonade with lemons but Andrea would probably make an art project or a dessert...the options are endless with her imagination! It's this ability to adapt and be flexible that created opportunities in Turkey to observe and learn about the culture around her.

Andrea and her husband lived in Turkey. She and Janese chat about the highs and lows of culture shock overseas, how everyone experiences humbleness through it, and how to differentiate between cultures and personalities.

    Culture Shock with Mehmet Casey

My guest on this week's podcast is Mehmet Casey. Mehmet (Mo) was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq where like many others, he navigated a stressful lifestyle. After college and a brief employment, he decided to step out of the scene to pursue more professional opportunities and gain a global perspective. He landed what was supposed to be a 10-month long exchange teaching Fulbright scholarship but later events at home left him no choice but to seek asylum, which ultimately made Billings, MT his new home.
