EP 185: The Power of Archetypes with Greg Schmaus: Four Survival Archetypes

EP 185: The Power of Archetypes with Greg Schmaus: Four Survival Archetypes

Today Greg shares his archetype-based healing program, a transformative journey toward self-discovery and healing that synthesizes the teachings of Paul Chek and Caroline Myss.

Greg's own story of overcoming mental and physical health has refined his holistic coaching methods, empowering listeners to chart their own course toward personal freedom.

Have you ever wondered how deep-seated archetypal patterns influence your self-worth, your ability to set boundaries, or your survival instincts in times of stress? Our dialogue ventures into the intricate dance of survival archetypes, particularly the 'prostitute' archetype, and its role in life's high-stakes negotiations.

Greg shares his insights on navigating life transitions, recognizing childhood dependencies, and embracing the transformation from dependency to self-assured autonomy.  He explains how these archetypal energies play out in real-world scenarios, from the coaching industry's unique negotiation challenges to the broader quest for empowerment.

We discuss how these foundational forces mold our perceptions, affect our relationships, and intersect with our spiritual beliefs. Greg offers a pathway toward resolving divine misconceptions and forging a more fulfilling connection with our personal image of God. With a blend of personal insights and archetypal wisdom, this episode is not just a conversation; it's an invitation to a deeper understanding of the forces that shape us.

TAMS # 1 – A Beautiful Day to Reflect on Death

TAMS # 1 – A Beautiful Day to Reflect on Death

This inaugural episode of Talking Amongst My Selves — a companion series to Conversations Along the Way (see the trailer for it for more information) —  takes on a light little topic: death. I reflect on how returning home to Berlin to be with my aging parents and struggling to find work brings up existential fears, with all of the different parts of me (Little Guy, Hothead, Mediator and Observer) having a different take on what is going on.

Ep 234 Epigenetics and Family Systems with Johanna Lynn

In this enlightening episode, we delve deep into the world of epigenetics and family systems, exploring the profound impact of early mother-child relationships on our adult interactions. Our guest, Johanna Lynn, a leading expert in the field, discusses the profound influence that the initial five years of life have on how we show up in our relationships later on.

We examine how our early attachment patterns create a blueprint for our future relationships, dictating our communication style, emotional responses, and even our capability for intimacy. But more importantly, we explore the empowering concept that these patterns, while deeply ingrained, are not cast in stone.

This episode offers insights into recognizing these early imprints and how they manifest in our adult relationships. Through thoughtful reflection and conscious effort, we discuss strategies to break negative cycles of interaction and redefine our relationship dynamics. I get personal about how I reshaped my relational blueprint in my own marriage.

So whether you're caught in a spiral of frustrating relationship patterns, curious about the science behind your emotional bonds, or are simply looking to understand yourself and your relationships better - this episode is a must-listen. Embark on this journey with us to unravel the threads of your past and weave the tapestry of your future relationships. Don't miss this chance to reshape your relational world and navigate towards your version of "happily ever after."

139 // 3 Beginner Steps To Help Kids Manage Big Overwhelming Emotions

Are your children struggling to manage their emotions?

Is it difficult for you to manage your own feelings and not be triggered by your kids meltdowns?

As a Christian parent, do you wish for a way to help them cope and understand?

On today’s episode, we will be discussing a powerful approach - cognitive behavioral techniques.

By teaching your kids the names of different emotions and helping them recognize what might be causing them, they can learn to label and respond to their emotions in healthy ways. Overwhelm in your home will be reduced instantly once this is learned.

This will help bring peace to your homeschool, more bonded relationships between each family member, and solid mental health as each child grows and matures with the emotional processing tools needed to create a solid foundation in their life.  As fans of the Charlotte Mason philosophy, making nurture part of our daily lifestyles means processing emotions in a healthy way matters to us.

I will give you tips and tricks on how to get started with cognitive behavioral techniques at home and provide activities that are sure to keep your children calm when feeling strong emotions.

Let’s dive into strategies that aim to set children up for success in dealing with the ups and downs of life!

    152. When the Leader is a Peacemonger, a Quick Conversation with Tod Bolsinger and Markus Watson

    152. When the Leader is a Peacemonger, a Quick Conversation with Tod Bolsinger and Markus Watson

Tod Bolsinger and Markus Watson discuss this quote from A Failure of Nerve, by Edwin Friedman.

“In any type of institution whatsoever, when a self-directed, imaginative, energetic, or creative member is being consistently frustrated and sabotaged rather than encouraged and supported, what will turn out to be true one hundred percent of the time, regardless of whether the disrupters are supervisors, subordinates, or peers, is that the person at the very top of that institution is a peace-monger.”

    Self-Care Isn't Selfishness

    Self-Care Isn't Selfishness

Thanks to the patriarchy, folx of all genders have been indoctrinated into the belief that women were put on this planet to nurture others. Moreover, when women choose to care for themselves, they're seen as selfish. Is it any wonder we're just a teensy bit resentful about being assigned that role?!

In this episode, Jessica breaks it all down and shares her willingness to put her self-care above everyone else's, even the peeps she loves the most. Because caring for others is how she makes a living, but caring for herself (and her dogs) is how she makes a life.  She offers a couple of powerful quotes on resentment, both suggesting that resentment is akin to eating poison and hoping the other person dies.

Nope. Doesn't work that way. You're the one who's gonna take it in the shorts, sis.

Newsflash: Those in your world will take whatever you give them. And yes, the world needs help, but if you're going to make the work sustainable for you, you must fill your cup first. The paradox is this. You can't truly offer yourself to others from a cup that is empty. The fuller your vessel, the more you have to give.  (You also can't keep giving folx a straw while you're trying to fill your cup.)

If you want to be able to give joyfully and without resentment, you must have a self-care plan in place, and be able to engage in it unapologetically.  Jessica offers tips on how to do this and shares some very personal limitations she's liberated herself from feeling bad about.

P.S. If you're a bit squeamish about puke, hearses, or the gubernatorial recall in California, maybe don't listen while you're lunching.

Healing Your Past for a Better Future

Healing Your Past for a Better Future
Almost everyone alive has had many challenges in their past. For many, our childhood was less than perfect yet we survived. Everyone has ancestors who survived horrific circumstances. They are your PAST and you epigenetically carry their unresolved experience within your own DNA. There is a way to disentangle from what is not yours to carry. Constellation healing provides the key to unlock the door of stored memories and reactions that do not serve your highest good. Guest Gary Stuart is a Master Constellation Facilitator and an expert in discovering the hidden dynamics at work in family systems. What he has learned is that there are hidden gifts that emanate from our negative experiences. Once that awareness is achieved we know what we are letting go of, then we become more empowered and free of the shackles that bind us. He contends that our past no longer exists except in our memory, and the healing goal is the newfound ability to be fully present to the gifts we received.

    47. Leadership, Anxiety, and Family Systems, with Steve Cuss, author of Managing Leadership Anxiety

    47. Leadership, Anxiety, and Family Systems, with Steve Cuss, author of Managing Leadership Anxiety

In this episode Steve Cuss, the author of Managing Leadership Anxiety discusses the way anxiety can affect, not only ourselves, but all those around us. We also talk about something called family systems theory, which has to do with recognizing and managing the anxiety in a system of relationships—be it a family, a church, a business, a baseball team, or school.

    THIS EPISODE’S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

    • Steve Cuss is the lead pastor at Discovery Christian Church in Denver, Colorado, and the author of Managing Leadership Anxiety.
    • Acute anxiety is when you’re in actual danger. The danger is short-term, and then the danger passes.
    • Family systems focuses on chronic anxiety, which has to do with what happens next after you don’t get what you think you need.
    • Chronic anxiety is long-term. It is not an actual threat; it is a perceived threat.
    • Laura Turner had shared on Steve’s podcast, Managing Leadership Anxiety, the idea of anxiety as a pet. It’s helpful to think of anxiety, not as a monster, but as a pet on a leash.
    • Steve Cuss says it’s helpful to be mindful where your anxiety begins. Does it start in a spinning mind, a racing heart, or a tightening gut?
    • It can also be helpful to ask a friend, “What are two or three things that I think I need, but that I don’t actually need?”
    • Murray Bowen, founder of family systems theory, noticed that our problems aren’t just inside us, but between us.
    • The most powerful person in the room is the most anxious person in the room—unless the room is being led by a non-anxious leader.
    • Edwin Friedman wrote Generation to Generation, which focuses on congregational leadership. He also wrote A Failure of Nerve, which looks at family systems in culture and society.
    • “Differentiation” is considered by Roberta Gilbert to be the cornerstone concept of family systems theory. It refers to your ability to notice when you’re being infected by someone else’s anxiety and how to stop your anxiety from infecting someone else.
