Qualcuno ha scritto che se c’è una cosa bella del ciclismo su strada è che per assistere a questo sport non bisogna andare a vederlo chiudendosi in un palazzetto o in uno stadio. È il ciclismo, attraverso i suoi percorsi, che viene a trovarci sulle nostre strade, quelle che percorriamo ogni giorno, immerse nei nostri territori.

Le immagini trasmesse in mondovisione in occasione del Giro d’Italia ci raccontano ogni anno la variegata realtà paesaggistica del nostro Paese, regalandoci panorami spettacolari, scorci di borghi tradizionali, città, campi coltivati, pascoli e, soprattutto, boschi: diversissimi tra loro e, proprio per questo, ricchi di biodiversità, legati indissolubilmente da millenni alle attività umane e quindi, oggi, laboratori a cielo aperto di sostenibilità.

Il Giro d’Italia non è solo sport, è territorio, nel senso più ampio del termine. Seguirlo significa anche scoprire l’Italia e noi crediamo che possa essere un ottimo modo per conoscere meglio il più sconosciuto dei tesori del nostro Paese: le foreste. Nelle tre settimane di corsa rosa le abbiamo raccontate su Lifegate, curva dopo curva, salita dopo salita, scatto dopo scatto, da una montagna all’altra, lungo un Giro parallelo: un Giro forestale d’Italia.

E alla fine del Giro, mentre seguivamo in diretta la tappa finale di Roma… abbiamo registrato una puntata speciale di Ecotoni, in cui ripercorrere assieme tutti i boschi attraversati dalla carovana rosa.

Cosa significa WOODPUNK?
È un termine che abbiamo coniato pensando a tutti coloro che, con passione, competenza e un pizzico di follia rivoluzionaria, dedicano anima e corpo alla Gestione Forestale Sostenibile, nel mezzo della crisi climatica e della transizione ecologica, per garantire a tutti noi i Servizi Ecosistemici dei boschi. Donne e uomini caratterizzati da una passione viscerale per alberi e legno, per montagne, comunità e territori rurali, che costruiscono ogni giorno l'equilibrio possibile tra conservazione e valorizzazione delle nostre foreste.
La prima WOODPUNK che vi raccontiamo è una donna, che il Corriere della Sera ha definito “La Signora del legno etico”. Il suo nome è Maria Rita Gallozzi, auditor FSC e PEFC e grande esperta di certificazione, in particolare per le foreste africane.
La puntata è quindi un viaggio tra Africa e Italia, che tocca serie problematiche ambientali e opportunità legate alla gestione responsabile delle foreste, siano esse tropicali o europee. L’esperienza, la passione e le emozioni di Maria Rita portano a conoscere un ambito troppo spesso opaco e sottolineano che il “Mal d’Africa” esiste, anche in campo forestale!

Blaue Engel, grüne Frosche, stilisierte Bäume, Blumen oder Fische: Zumindest auf den Ökosiegeln nimmt die Artenvielfalt noch immer zu. 455 verschiedene Umweltzeichen aus 199 Ländern listet der so genannte ECO Label Index auf. In diesem Dschungel der grünen Zertifikate ist es nicht so leicht den Überblick zu behalten und so mancher sieht den Sinn vor lauter Siegeln nicht mehr. Entlasten solche Gütesiegel wie FSC, Grüner Knopf oder Fair trade tatsächlich die Umwelt oder ist das Ganze doch oft ein Etikettenschwindel? Die Antwort ist wie immer kompliziert. Wir versuchen es in dieser Episode von ÜberLeben trotzdem und sprechen mit Alfred Schumm, der lange im Aufsichtsrat des Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), dem wohl bekanntesten Umweltlabel für Fisch, gesessen hat. Maja and Neil discuss Australian Advisory’s latest research paper which outlined the biggest concerns of advisers moving forward, on the back of news that the total number of advisers in Australia has dropped below 19,000.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Financial Services Council (FSC) released a new white paper which proposes a framework that the peak body claims could reduce the cost of providing financial advice by almost 40 per cent. Maja and Neil discuss the paper and the reaction to the recommendations within the industry.

Whether they do or not has massive implications for forest conservation worldwide, and while the evidence is hard to find, this tropical forest ecologist has interesting findings to share.

Our second guest is Steve Wilson, who has just written a new paper on Javan rhino vocalizations. He plays some recordings of these fascinating sounds and discusses what they mean.
