    Season 09 Episode 09

What Does it Mean to Be Gluten Free?

What does it mean to eat gluten-free? Find out when my friend Marvin from the Live Healthy Podcast interviews me on his show! On this episode of Travel Gluten-free Podcast, you’ll find out about me, how I came up with my name Elikqitie, along with questions and answers which my friend Marvin asked me about how to be gluten free.

What Does it Mean to Be Gluten Free?

Being gluten free means that you aren’t eating any foods that contain gluten. So what’s gluten? Gluten is the protein found in several grains including wheat, barley, triticale, and other grains. When you don’t eat gluten, you are eliminating any grain that contains gluten along with any processed foods that contain gluten including those with ingredients such as: modified food starch, hydrolyzed protein, and natural flavors or spices as these ingredients all have the possibility to contain gluten.

Eating Gluten Free as a Preference

If you’ve eaten out or you’ve talked to anyone breathing on the face of our planet, you know that some people eat gluten-free to try it out or as a preference. While that is fine, there is a significant distinction between eating gluten free as a preference and avoiding gluten because of medical reasons such as Celiac disease or a food allergy.

Adjusting to Gluten Free Eating and the Gluten Free Lifestyle

While some people find out about Celiac disease as a child and grow up eating gluten free, I didn't find out until the age of 42. Being of French and Italian descent, I believed that my gastronomic enjoyment was over because I didn’t think I would ever be able to eat bread or pasta again. However, there are some amazing food brands out there and I can enjoy almost any food that I want in its gluten-free form. Learning how to make food again was challenging, but the real challenge was knowing how to eat when I’m not in the city that I live - the big challenge is learning how to travel gluten free!

Best Places to Travel When You’re Gluten Free

Marvin turns the table on me when he asks me the best places to eat for gluten free travelers, where I’m going on my next trip, and what I miss the most. (Note: since we recorded this show I have gotten my fix of buttery croissants and I would love to go back to the European bakery and get more!).

    Gluten free Pasta

Barilla gluten free pasta comes in all shapes and sizes. One thing that sets Barilla pasta apart is its fabulous gluten-free lasagna sheets. Banza is another excellent pasta brand made from chickpeas, giving it a good texture. Jovial gluten-free pasta, which is made from rice. Jovial pasta stands out because of the gluten-free egg noodles, a unique product in the market. Lotus Foods makes several different flavors of gluten free ramen noodles.

Annie's is another gluten-free pasta that is rice based and is especially loved for its mac and cheese variety. If you are gluten-free and vegan, Daiya is an excellent alternative to macaroni and cheese. All Daiya products are gluten and dairy-free, making them a safer choice for Celiacs. Amy's Pasta has a gluten-free line to cater to the gluten intolerant. Amy's has excellent gluten-free frozen dinners and gluten free burritos.

    Gluten free Pretzels

First on our list is Fitjoy gluten free and grain-free pretzels. Snyder's is another excellent brand that makes pretzels, including minis and pretzel sticks. Glutino is a gluten-free pretzel brand that has been in the market for decades and has improved the quality of its pretzels. If you love sea-salt pretzels, look for Good Health. Finally, snack Factory makes gluten-free pretzel crisps that are crunchy with a nice texture.

Best Gluten Free Desserts to Make at Home this Summer!

Best Gluten Free Desserts to Make at Home this Summer!

    Travel Gluten Free Podcast

    Season 09 Episode 02

Best Gluten Free Desserts to Make at Home

Are you a Celiac with a sweet tooth and loves eating gluten free dessert? Living a gluten-free lifestyle doesn't mean you can't enjoy dessert. Join us for today's Travel Gluten-free Podcast as we share delicious gluten-free desserts you can make at home.

Best Gluten Free Desserts to Make at Home

First on our list of the best Gluten-free desserts is Gluten-free Lemon Bars. Lemon bars are a favorite for many people during the summer and are simple to make. Are you a white chocolate chip fan? If you answer yes, you will love our next gluten-free dessert, blondies. Gluten-free blondies are made using white chocolate.

Apple pies make a fantastic dessert, especially during the summer and for barbeques. We recommend using Wholly Gluten-free pie shells because they are free of other allergens besides gluten. If you can't find Wholly Gluten Free Pie Shells, grab a box of King Arthur gluten free pie crust mix

Gluten-free soft pretzels, especially the ones from Moms Place Gluten Free, are great for snacking. Gluten-free pretzels are either made from corn starch or grain-free, so you can pick according to your preference. Gluten-free graham crackers are another great dessert despite their taking much time to prepare. Another dessert that uses marshmallows is rice crispy treats. Note that some rice cereal brands, besides Malt O'Meal, contain malt.

Banana bread is another delicious gluten-free dessert. Pick ripe bananas to make your bread sweeter and more moist. The best flour to use is cassava flour. Cheesecakes are easy to make, and you could also buy ready-made ones, such as the Gem City cheesecake, and add it to your gluten-free graham cracker shells.

My favorite gluten-free pasta is Banza, and it's made of chickpeas, which has a great texture and is less foamy when cooking because it's high in protein. I also love Capello's gluten-free pasta made from almond flour.
