Given a 50% Chance to Live, Ian Panter Took Control

"I turned 37 in rehab after suffering a severe TBI. As a passenger in a car, I got hit on my side going 86 in the 35 speed zone.

I was given a 50% chance to live by the doctors.

The next week, my mother was told I would need 24-hour care for the rest of my life, then another week later in a group home, and then a week later I could be taken to rehab.

This whole time I was non-responsive and had six weeks of amnesia."

A few areas of discussion with Ian Panter include:
-The power of changing one word: change has to get in your choice of sentences
-The last thing he remembered for 6 weeks
    -The community of Tough Mudder
-Other people are affected by situations in your life
    -Having to adjust
    -Having a support system

Hope Children's Home - A Modern Day Orphanage

Hope Children's Home - A Modern Day Orphanage

On the 69th episode of The Paul Cardall Podcast, Hope Children's Home Administrative Director Matt Higgins joins Paul to discuss a modern day orphanage. Founded in 1968, Hope Children’s Home has rescued nearly 5,000 children between the ages of infant to 18 years of age. They discuss their belief that a personal relationship with Christ, combined with an excellent education and a well-rounded sports program is the key to Hope’s success.

    ABOUT HOPE CHILDREN'S HOME

Founded in 1968, Hope Children’s Home has rescued nearly 5,000 children between the ages of infant to 18 years of age. The type of children we care for are not juvenile delinquents, but rather children that, through no fault of their own, find themselves in a situation of needed rescue. Some children simply come out of a situation where a parent just needs a little help.

Whether it’s our campus in Tampa, New Mexico, or Honduras, each child is equally important in God’s eyes and ours. Each campus is able to care for the children in a beautiful family atmosphere while instilling core Christian values.

We believe that a personal relationship with Christ, combined with an excellent education and a well-rounded sports program is the key to Hope’s success. Our school program begins in our Nursery and continues through the 12th grade. We are proud to say that over 95% of the students who graduate from Hope Christian School continue to college.

Hope Children’s Home receives no State or Federal funding but rather is entirely supported by churches, private individuals, businesses, and organizations. The faith that we exercise each and every day for our needs is a faith that is passed on to the children as they see God’s hand of provision. The children see first-hand that God will never leave them nor forsake them.

For over 50 years, Hope Children’s Home has lovingly cared for children in need and tried to make a difference in their very impressionable lives. We feel that God has called us to help rebuild the broken lives of these children and to build the bridge, when possible, between home, parent, and child. The rewards of our labor are the thousands of children across the country who are now productive adults raising their own children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

How to Survive Society with Soslan Newell

How to Survive Society with Soslan Newell

Looking back on his life, Soslan can see how God has impacted his life so many times and how his experiences strengthened his faith and made him walk with God even closer. He was born in Russia and surrendered to an orphanage at birth. His birth records documented that he was likely a product of rape. Over the years, He spent time at the Vladikavkaz Russia orphanage until 2006. From what he can  recall, there were over 40 plus children (majority of them were under the age of two) in that orphanage, with only two ladies in their late 70s; were the sole caregivers in the orphanage, many of whom were babies. During those eight and half years, it was necessary to go into the streets and search for garbage to survive. He was undernourished, beaten, and sexually assaulted several times. Russia was at war with Georgia, and the Russian police and military were constantly present throughout Vladikavkaz. Since he was the oldest in the orphanage, his duty was to stand in the long lines to receive half of the bread and a pail of water; the bread he received was very doughy, and the water was taken out of the river that flowed through the city. Since the half loaf bread wasn't enough, he would go out scavenging for food, and the Russian police and military would frequently catch him, beat him, and sexually assault him. When a family, "Steve and Jenny Newell " from Bend, Oregon, came to Russia to adopt one girl. When the Newell arrived at the orphanage, they were asked to take as many kids as possible. The Newells were about mid-'40s, nor had any experience with children. Among the three boys, I was one of them that came to America along with two girls. Lucky he was adopted because two hours later after he left,  the orphanage was bombed by Georgia, killing everyone. He knows that God was watching over him and has a plan. As a result of going to America, He spent two and half years in Bend, Oregon, with a family. Listen for more of Soslan's story.

Sylvia Beachy and Kajal Emmett, Founders Of Rescue The Fosters, Speak Out On Children And Foster Youth Having Rights And A Voice

      https://www.buzzsprout.com/1364944/subscribe

Slam the Gavel welcomes Sylvia Beachy and Kajal (KK) Emmett to the podcast. Rescue The Fosters is founded by Sylvia Beachy and Kajal Emmett.
Sylvia Beachy has 5 years of experience working in the foster system. She has had many roles that include Staff Member, Case Manager, Transporter, Parent Aide, and Behavior Aide. She started out as a staff member at Elks Aidmore group home which is where she met KK. KK was a foster youth at Elks Aidmore!
However, KK had aged out of the system with absolutely no place to go! This began the journey of Rescue The Fosters.
Their mission is to give the children and youth in Foster Care a voice! They also provide resources to youth aging out of the system to keep them off the streets and out of prisons! Additionally, they also strive to keep FAMILIES TOGETHER! Therefore, they additionally assist families navigating the CPS!
Excellent conversation regarding how foster children are in "survival mode" at all times. They have been ripped away from their families and question themselves or if anyone loves them. In Foster Care, the goal is surviving.
Sylvia Beachy told her story of how she started out in the system and how workers become desensitized  with new influx of children coming into the group home.  She also told her story of meeting a young man wearing a homeless sign and she got out of her car and questioned him. He told her he had gotten out of Foster Care with no PAPERWORK. Sylvia helped him get the paperwork he needed to get a job and find his biological mother. Sylvia's message: LISTEN TO THE CHILDREN.
Kajal Emmett explained that she was just a little girl roaming the streets as an orphan and how a police officer found her and took her to the proper authorities and he guessed her age by her teeth. Sylvia explained that they still don't know her true age. KK stated to all youth in Foster Care not to be afraid and not to be trapped by fear, that they have rights and to keep track of all paperwork, emails (make copies) and documents.

    Liz Hauck Writes: Home Made

    Liz Hauck Writes: Home Made

A book that could change your life. Home Made author Liz Hauck decided to follow-up on an idea she hatched with her father just before he passed away: she would show up and make and eat dinner with the boys who lived in the group home where he worked. She did just that. For three full years, Liz showed up every week with bags of groceries and made dinner with the teenagers who lived in the home. The book is so well-written and inspiring that none other than the Times book review gave this first time author a rave. Read it here

Alexis Obinna: My Business Is Me. That's My Number One Priority

Jayne Amelia talks with former foster youth and advocate Alexis Obinna. Alexis is one of the founders and a current member of the Los Angeles Reproductive Health Equity Project Youth Advisory Board.

During Alexis's time in California’s foster care system, volunteering at church was fun and better than staying at home. During college, Alexis was able to grow and learn more about support groups and organizations that are available to youth in foster care. Each year, Alexis helps run an annual event called “Independent City” where younger youth learn how to handle real-life situations. Alexis would like to keep learning and going to school in pursuit of a degree that will lead to helping foster children. Alexis’s main goal one day is to start a non-profit organization that helps with housing in Los Angeles County. Alexis has been volunteering and giving back to various communities since age eight. She started with helping her foster mom watch the daycare children, trash removal at her school, painting her school, planting community gardens, and so much more. In 2019 she graduated with her double associate's in sociology, and child development. She currently attends California State University Los Angeles, where she continues to fight and give back to various communities as a Social Work major. Alexis is a huge social and racial justice advocate and has fought for the rights of many people of color. She has collaborated with many nonprofits such as California Youth Connections, Los Angeles Reproductive Health Equity Program, the Department of Children and Family Services, Independent City, Youth-Led Participatory Action Plan research board, and so many more. She has been with CYC since 2014 and is honored to do great work to improve the child welfare system. In her free time, she enjoys practicing yoga and meditation, roller skating, collecting crystals, visiting new places, and making art. She plans on working in a space that provides equitable resources and fair chances that she was denied. She wants to spread hope and positivity, and values working on herself to do so. Thank you for reading her bio and please ask her anything;  having had experienced the child welfare system for over sixteen years, she has many useful and resources.
