60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: Spotlighting Dr. Nadine Kelly & Her Newest Podcast for Wise Women: Health Raisers

60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: Spotlighting Dr. Nadine Kelly & Her Newest Podcast for Wise Women: Health Raisers

Hello to you listening in Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories from Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a wee bit more for you) for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

What if I told you that my friend and colleague, Dr. Nadine Kelly, MD, is a former medical doctor.

What if I told you that Dr. Nadine left a soul-crushing medical career that depended on a sickness model to become a health advocate for Wise Women, helping hundreds of women find their healthy!

Why? Because she believes in a broader and more holistic definition of health, including body, mind, and spirit, but also emotions, intellect, and relationships.

Dr. Nadine’s manifesto reminds Wise Women that they are much more than their dress size. Her advice: stop putting up with toxic relationships, swallowing your true emotions, and sacrificing your mental health. Stop using your body as a battlefield! You're always giving. You deserve to put yourself first, not just for your sake, but for those you love. Wise Women, let's make ourselves a priority right now! It's time to raise some health together!

And so was born Health Raisers, a podcast for Wise Women by Dr. Nadine Kelly, former doctor, yoga instructor, and health integration coach.

E79 - Dr. Orlena Kerek - Pediatric Doctor turned family health advocate and author

E79 - Dr. Orlena Kerek - Pediatric Doctor turned family health advocate and author

    EPISODE 79 -

Dr. Orlena Kerek - Pediatric doctor turned family health advocate and author - I'm going to show you how to make healthy living fun and easy so you can lose weight, get more energy and love your amazing life. I help ambitious mums have bucket loads of energy and overcome the frustration of not losing weight by teaching them to eat and be healthy, to look after themselves and feel fit and fabulous.

I'm here to show you it can be easy to lead a healthy life, wake up every morning full of energy and ready to take on the day!

And if weight is an issue for you, I'll show you how to ditch the yo-yo dieting and enjoy a healthy relationship with delicious, tasty and healthy food.

I worked as a doctor in the UK. It broke my heart to see so many sick people in hospital dying of “lifestyle disease” that could have been prevented with a healthy lifestyle.

I moved to Spain in 2011 because I wanted to lead my “ideal life”. I moved away from clinical practice to helping families establish healthy habits. What I love is seeing changes in families and knowing that I’m helping people lead long healthy lives and avoid all those nasty lifestyle illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and even some cancers.

S4 E1: Melanin and Medicine (Dr. Omolara Thomas Uwemedimo)

S4 E1: Melanin and Medicine (Dr. Omolara Thomas Uwemedimo)

    DR. OMOLARA THOMAS UWEMEDIMO

Welcome to Season 4 of Shades and Layers: On Intersections (Beauty, Health and Wellness)

For the first episode of this season we have partnered with  Melanin and Medicine, who are doing important work helping Black, LatinX, and Indigenous women in the medical field build, fund, and grow their own businesses.

Our guest is CEO and founder, Dr. Omolara Thomas Uwemedimo. In our conversation she discusses how a health crisis forced her to take a pause and reflect on her 15-year career as a pediatrician, professor and healthcare advocate. During her recovery, she took time to connect with her colleagues in the sector and found that she was not alone in her quest for an integrated and balanced life, and so she created Melanin and Medicine.

She also took the chance to use the program she offers through Melanin and Medicine, to co-found and launch her own social enterprise, Strong Children Wellness, where she continues her passion for bringing quality healthcare to children in black and brown and other marginalized communities.

In our candid chat, she gets in to the details of what she does on a day to day, being raised by a nurse, growing up in a Nigerian household and all the other factors that came together to influence her career trajectory and passion for social justice and advocacy.

I hope our conversation will inspire you to find the intersection of all the things that make you thrive in life and work.

    LINKS & MENTIONS

If Dr. Omolara's mission resonates with you, feel free to reach out to her and the team for FREE and get a review of your ideas and answers to your relevant questions.

Strong Children Wellness - Co-founded by Dr. Omolara Thomas Uwemedimo , this is one of the companies that have been through the Melanin and Medicine incubator, a case of the doctor taking her own medicine if you will.

    The Chinese Body Clock

    The Chinese Body Clock

The Chinese Body Clock is used by practitioners as an assessment tool to see where disease or dysfunction might be present. The basis of this clock is that it reflects the times at which each of our organs is functioning at its peak, so that we might be able to understand more about how to support our bodies, but also how to recognize patterns of dysfunction. It helps us understand how we can optimize our day to support our organs, rest when we need to and recover well.

Listen to understand what times of day are associated with each organ and how to support yourself!

    Headaches

    Headaches

With so many people working from home, the increase in screen and phone time and our disturbances in sleep, I’ve been receiving inquiries on differential diagnoses for headaches.

Many headaches can be hard to diagnose and treat. Manual osteopaths perform a full neurological exam and closely examine the neck as well. We  use a pain guide that can help differentiate certain headaches, create an effective treatment for our patients and notice red flags and the need to seek medical attention.

    Health Topic: Headaches

What is it?: There are many types of headaches. The most common are tension and vascular (migraines) headaches.

Symptoms: Tension headache symptoms can pose as pain in the neck, head and face, eye disturbances, immobility and sensitivity. Vascular headaches can be unilateral, stabbing and intense pain, have an aura associated with it, dread and dissociation and digestive upset.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Manual osteopaths use a pain protocol, health history and palpation to help determine how to properly treat your headache.

    Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective:

If you suffer from chronic headaches I would generally recommend stress reduction techniques such as meditation and massage therapy treatments. Our lymphatic system also needs support during this time, so facial massage and downward dog can be helpful. I would recommend time in nature and deep breathing, and changes in nutrient intake and hydration. I would not recommend high intensity activity and extra screen time. More specifically, a physical exam will tell us what specific muscles and joints are affected and guide us to offering proper home care and treatment.

If you have a sudden onset of a painful headache, seek medical attention.
