e95. One Pastor's Journey to Regenerative Farming with Rob Dowdle

Join us on the Grazing Grass podcast as we welcome Rob Dowdle, a seventh-generation farmer with a rich heritage in agriculture. Rob shares his transformation from a full-time pastor to a passionate steward of the land, managing a diverse range of livestock. Tune in as Rob recounts the evolution of his farming practices, from childhood experiences on a beef feeder operation to embracing the challenges and joys of animal husbandry, including raising pasture pigs and cattle. His dedication to regenerative farming and reconnecting his family with their agricultural roots offers a personal and engaging narrative that's sure to captivate anyone interested in the farming lifestyle.

Listen in as we explore the practical aspects of farming with Rob, who delves into the nitty-gritty of pasture poultry and the economics of egg production versus meat birds. He shares valuable insights into the labor-intensive nature of managing egg layers and the decision-making that led to a pivot towards pastured pigs. The conversation takes a deep turn into the intricacies of livestock breeds, from the slower-growing, fatty Mangalitsas to the more traditional breeds favored by consumers. Rob's firsthand experiences with direct-to-consumer sales, managing farm infrastructure, and optimizing livestock for quality and marketability make this episode a treasure trove of farming wisdom.

Our discussion culminates with a look at the innovative agricultural practices Rob employs on his farm. We cover the environmental and cost benefits of integrating cover crops like sorghum-sudangrass, the significant savings they provide, and the positive impact on soil health. Rob also introduces us to the world of beekeeping, revealing how honey bees have become a complementary and low-maintenance facet of his farm ecosystem. For anyone curious about regenerative agriculture, or seeking tips to enhance their farming journey, Rob's stories and advice are not to be missed. Don't forget to visit Dowdle Family Farms' website for more updates and insights into the delightful world of farming as told by a true practitioner of the craft.

Saving the Bees: Why Honey Bees Are Not the Answer

Saving the Bees: Why Honey Bees Are Not the Answer

No bee is as popular as the honey bee. When we think of a bee, many of us think of this charismatic social bee that lives in large colonies, does the wiggle dance, produces the honey we love, and pollinates many of our crops. Although honey bees can be found all over North America, they only arrived in the 17th century by way of European settlers. Aside from honey bees, in North America, thousands of native bees can be found on the landscape.

We’ve all heard that bees are in decline. As a non-native species, are honey bees the answer to helping us “save the bees”? How do honey bees interact with our native bees on the landscape?

Joining us to help answer these questions is Rich Hatfield. Rich is Xerces Senior Endangered Species Conservation Biologist and Bumble Bee Conservation Lead, and manages all aspects of the Xerces Society’s work on bumble bees. This includes community science projects, as well as understanding the threats to bumble bees and actions we can take to protect them. Rich has studied the factors that impact bumble bees, including the presence of honey bees in our landscapes.

Be a Beekeeper with the Greater Cleveland Beekeepers

Be a Beekeeper with the Greater Cleveland Beekeepers
In this episode, we explore the world of beekeeping with Denzil and Sheila St. Clair. Sheila and Denzil have been happily married and very busy for 52 years, keeping bees, raising children, operating their bee business, and founding the Greater Cleveland Beekeepers Association (GCBA). Greg and I caught up with them on a Wednesday evening at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, where they were demonstrating how to do an "alcohol wash" on a hive to determine if it contained harmful mites. This preceded the beekeepers association's annual July picnic. The GCBA supports hundreds of backyard beekeepers from all walks of life. They come together to learn, support each other, socialize, and help spread the word about the essential need for honeybees and beekeeping. Housed at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, the GCBA educates aspiring and existing beekeepers and the public. There are several active bee hives, a bee barn, a pollinator garden, and an observation hive. Join us as we dip into this topic just enough to pique your interest in becoming a beekeeper, spark an appreciation for bees, and inspire you to take a beginner beekeeping course through GCBA.

Ep #32 Atomic Bee Messages | Monday Musings

Ep #32 Atomic Bee Messages | Monday Musings

My inspiration for this week was time spent with a bee-sister's hive. I was asked to check in on a bee-sister's hive that was disrupted by pirating bees from another hive, going after their great honey stores.  All I could do was drop into my heart. When I did, the patterns of their flight revealed the Patterns of Creation.

    67: The Dark Side

    67: The Dark Side
Joe and Rob talk about things that should never have been, scientific experiments and ideas that were evil or just egregiously wrong. They use four examples: The Tuskegee long-term syphilis experiments, lobotomy, electroshock therapy, and Nazi science (and how much of US technology is based upon it today). This might be a tough listen, but education is sometimes sobering.

Economic value of insect pollinators in U.S. much higher than thought

Economic value of insect pollinators in U.S. much higher than thought
A University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University study finds bees and other pollinators play an extremely important role in agriculture. One key finding is that the economic value of insect pollination totaled $34 billion in 2012, the most recent year for which data were available. At the same time, areas most reliant economically on pollination services are where pollinator habitat and forage quality are poor.

    Killer Bees and IQ

    Killer Bees and IQ
On this episode of Tell Me What You Know, we’re getting buzzed off a cold six-pack of Killer Bee knowledge. The Africanized Honeybee, AKA Killer Bee, likes to swarm and sting more than their docile cousins. We talk about how this hybrid Apis made its way to the USA, and dive into whether or not these insects are as deadly and dangerous as they have been made out to be. Where does their sting rank on the Pain Scale, created by the King of Sting himself? You’ll have to listen to find out. And then, we’re talking about our Intelligence Quotients, and if you wicked smart you’ll know we’re talking about IQ. This standardized measurement compares your intelligence against all the other test participants,. An IQ of 100 doesn’t mean you anything other than you are perfectly average. People with IQs in the top 2% of the population can join the organization Mensa which makes them Mensans which I think shows exactly how smart they are. Me and Michael aren’t Mensans and you probably aren’t either because you’re listening to Tell Me What You Know.
