    You Have Potential…

    You Have Potential…

What has been preventing me from counting sheep? The word POTENTIAL. Drives me crazy. Dont't care for the word, "potential." When people say, "they have so much potential.." I discuss why this sentence bothers me . I also talk about participating. What constitutes, "participating?" What do you need to do to get a participation award? How much do you have to participate? I go on about my thoughts on the word, "participation."

Episode Thirty One- Workplace Well-Being and Health Culture with Richard Safeer, M.D.

    Happy New Year!!!

Many of us start each January by setting goals, deciding on priorities, and declaring resolutions for the upcoming year.

The most common goals each year center around health and well-being, with many falling under the umbrella of “getting in shape” or “losing weight.”

According to a new survey by Forbes Health, the top resolutions for 2024 include improving fitness, finances, and mental health. "Getting to the gym more, drinking less, and being more active and healthy,"

Regardless of the specifics of our goals, as the ball drops on New Year's Eve, millions focus intention on lifestyle changes. We want to start fresh and become a better, healthier, and happier version of ourselves.

Welcome to Episode Thirty-one of The Nature of Wellness Podcast.

On this episode, we sat down with workplace health pioneer, author, and thought leader Richard Safeer, M.D.

For the past 20 years, Dr. Safeer has assessed cultures, trained leaders, and conducted and explored research on the intersection of individual and organizational behavior.

He currently serves as the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-Being for Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he leads the Healthy at Hopkins employee health and well-being strategy.

In early 2023, Richard released A Cure for the Common Company: A Well-Being Prescription for a Happier, Healthier, and More Resilient Workforce, which was extremely well-received in the healthcare and wellness fields.

Join us as we talk to Dr. Safeer about his impressive personal journey within the healthcare field, the most important (and often overlooked) factors for a successful culture, and how we can integrate our workplace into New Year’s resolutions.

Richard discusses how his incredible book is meant to serve leaders in all fields, the need for organizations to employ “internal wellness champions,” how time in nature impacts his personal and professional roles,  and how “well-being is a team sport.”

We left this conversation ready to face a new year, happier, healthier, and spending more time outside.

6 - Come to My Senses

Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson are masters of embracing change and evolution in the creative process. Track 6—“Come to My Senses”—is an example of their ability to keep moving forward, and making music that is fresh, relevant, but still authentic to who they are.

In this episode, they reveal how a song written years ago, blossomed in the recording studio with the help of a solid bass line, great musicians (such as trumpet player Daniel Lapp), and a fruitful collaboration with producer and multi-instrumentalist Joby Baker.

In addition to the interview, you'll also hear Andy and Josh perform two songs: "Come to My Senses" (Hide Your Light, 2023) and "Warmth of the Sun" (Warmth of the Sun, 2017). Both tracks are recorded by Tim Vesely, live-off-the-floor at the Woodshed Studio in Toronto.

    1 - Debris

Episode 1 of Employee of the Myth  features Ronnie Lane's "Debris", the opening track on Skydiggers' new EP, Hide Your Light.

“If you’ll learn to play an instrument you will always have a friend.” A solid piece of advice from Stanley Lane to his son Ronnie, who would take that advice and turn it into a career writing songs and playing with seminal British bands the Small Faces, Faces and Slim Chance. This is our tip of the cap to the late, great, Ronnie Lane and his tribute to his father.

In addition to the interview, you'll also hear Andy and Josh perform two songs: "Debris”, by Ronnie Lane (Hide Your Light 2023), and "You've Got a Lot of Nerve", by Andrew Cash (Road Radio, 1995). Both tracks are recorded by Tim Vesely, live-off-the-floor at the Woodshed Studio in Toronto.

    Don Kerr - Love Speech

    Don Kerr - Love Speech

Don Kerr is a drummer, singer, songwriter, cellist, composer, and producer. He's also a pacifist/activist, who believes strongly in the power of positivity and the value of community. A much-sought-after sideman and bandmate since the 1990s, he has performed with Rheostatics, Ron Sexsmith, Bahamas, Dan Mangan, The Weather Station, and many others.

Don's own band—Communism—is a super-charged power trio, renowned for their "dance-your-face-off" live shows, for which Don performs using a DIY stand-up drum kit, fashioned to create a more dynamic presentation.  The result (in combination with video, lights, and lasers) is a visually arresting, sonically exhilarating, and uplifting experience..

Despite our differences as humans, Don Kerr believes that we're all good at heart, and capable of love, change, and...dancing up a storm.  Don looks for the up sides, and talks about how the pandemic allowed his band—at home with no tours planned—the time to create a sonically rich, layered, and exploratory album. The result is Love Speech : 10 tracks dedicated to "...dancing with love in your heart." Don also shares his thoughts on being a "pacifist at war", balancing family and work, composing the soundtrack for The Colour of Ink documentary, and what "communism" means to him.

Later in the episode, musician, engineer and Music Buddy Sessions producer Tim Vesely joins the conversation. Don and Tim compare notes about drums and bass, and the early days playing with Ron Sexsmith and Rheostatics.

    Birth of a Culture

    Birth of a Culture

All of humanity is not destroying this planet. Humans who are part of Western culture are culpable. In this first part of a trilogy, John Stollmeyer begins by sharing the definition for culture as defined by sociologists. He points out that the word's origin is a good guide to begin understanding the history of culture. Culture comes from an Indo-European root word meaning to revolve, to move around, to dwell, to sojourn or to turn around. John suggests that until agriculture showed up, this Western culture did not exist. He delves into the connections among growing food, growing populations, conquest and dominant Western culture.

Bookkeepers – Stop Trying to Be So Perfect

Bookkeepers – Stop Trying to Be So Perfect

In this insightful new episode of The Bookkeepers' Voice, Angie Martin gets real with ALL bookkeepers after what was undoubtedly a difficult 2020.

Join us as Angie will be reflecting on the challenges of 2020 and how so many people are still struggling as a result of bushfires, floods and the Covid-19 pandemic.

As bookkeepers, we all know that our industry has worked so hard to create a professional, refined and almost perfect face. Why? Because so many of us felt that our clients expected it, as well as our industry. However now is the time to stop being perfect because after all - no one is and no business is. In fact, now is the perfect time as an industry to get more comfortable in pulling back the curtain and showing the amazing business owners we are and that we too are human.

Key Takeaway: "Stop trying to be so perfect."
