The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E6

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E6

Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 6 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see 'Artists featured' below (in order of appearance).

The Immortals track this week came from Blue Öyster Cult, a track called Shooting Shark off The Revolution By Night album.  Buck Dhara on guitar never disappoints.

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F’.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F’.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early ’00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each:

    Free – Fire and Water

Five Finger Death Punch – American Capitalist

    Fokofpolisiekar – Lugsteurings

    Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

Artists featured:  The Jam, Motörhead, Night Ranger, the Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, Roan Van As, Tom Petty, Iced Earth, hell Fire, Kiss, L.A. Guns, Massive Wagons, Circus of Power, Doomsday Outlaw, Halestorm, The Distillers, The Wildhearts, Iron maiden, Judas Priest, Nevada beach, Tokyo Blade, Tony Martin,  Roadkill Ghost Choir, Volbeat, W.A.S.P., Blue Öyster Cult, Free, Five Finger Death Punch, Fokofpolisiekar, Foo Fighters, Extreme, Deep Purple, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Avenged Sevenfold, ACDC

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

Welcome to the 7th season of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  S7E1 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 Jan 2024.  We kicked off with David Bowie and It’s No Game (Part 1) which feels like the perfect song for where we find ourselves in 2024.

The Diabolical Challenge has had a make-over.  In Season 6 I presented 4 albums from a specific year and listeners got to vote on which one they would choose if they could only take one.  Well with 52 shows in 2023, we ran out of years.  The new Diabolical Challenge looks at things alphabetically.  We will do two cycles A – Z to get us through to the end of Season 7.  Starting at 'A" we had:

ACDC – Flick of the Switch

Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil

Accept – Balls to the Wall and

    Audioslave – Audioslave

The Immortals track, a track over 7 minutes long that never gets airplay but is an amazing example of a band or artist at their best stays as is and we kicked off the year with Grand Funk Railroad and a track called ‘Inside Looking Out’ and that one was especially dedicated to Norman Roux.

Artists featured: David Bowie, Dee Snider, KK’s priest, Def Leppard, Iced Earth, Foghat, Hawkwind, Saxon, Scorpions, L,A. Guns, Skid Row, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Seether, Reef, Rammstein, Böhse Onkelz, Demon, Hellyeah, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Girish & the Chronicles, Jelusick, Dio, Guns ‘n’ Roses. Grand Funk Railroad, Accept, Avenged Sevenfold, Audioslave, ACDC, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, ZZ Top, Roan Ash, Warren Zevon, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E6

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E6

We kicked episode 6 with a track called ‘Burning For You’ a cover of a great track by Blue Öyster Cult, very well done here by Iced Earth.  The show then got heavy with Killswitch Engage and Annihilator,  with ‘Desperate Times’ and 'Set the World On Fire’ respectively.   Both of these fall into the TSORR Songs that could be about South Africa category.  Accept and Sinner gave us a taste of German metal and then we had Thundermother out of Sweden.  There was a great little SA music segue early in the show where we checked out Jack Hammer Band with a pre-released track called 'As I Turn Away' and then a band out of Sekunda called Pilgrim South.  Their new track 'Old Man Moonshine went down well.  From there we were into familiar territory with Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Def Leppard.  my love affair with Def Leppard's Mutt Lange produced Hi 'N' Dry album continues, we listened to 'Lady Strange'.

Manic Street Preachers and a new-ish band I am not too familiar with called St. Aurora changed the pace a bit and then we started to delve into this week's Ultimate Challenge, 4 albums released in 1980 and you can only choose one.  The albums selected were Judas Priest - British Steel, Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Motörhead -  Ace of Spades, and ACDC - Back in Black.  the votes came in but in the end, it was one-way traffic with the winner of this week's Ultimate Challenge going to Back In Black

The Immortal track was Gun ‘n’ Roses with Estranged and we kept our punk confined to the USA with Iggy Pop, The Distillers, and Weezer.  I had some problems with Brody Dalle squashed in the middle.  This week I discovered Doomsday Outlaw, this track called ' Is This The End of Everything' features the kind of guitar tone and phrasing that I absolutely love.  Talking guitar, a track off the new Winery Dogs with Richie Kotzen, Bily Sheehan, and Mike Portnoy hit the stop.  Girish and the Chronicles are just simply blazing, what a band.  We ended heavy with Ablaze My Sorrow off their new EP, and Phantom Days by Dark Tranquility.  Oh, one last thing TSORR made No 12 on the list of top 35 Rock Podcasts on the planet, check it out right here:

Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

Ep. 140: Degrees Of Separation... RIPPER

Ep. 140: Degrees Of Separation... RIPPER

This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n’ roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!

New to InObscuria? It’s all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Ripper - “Embattled” from Embattled - Single (2022)
    2. Winter’s Bane - “Heart Of A Killer” from Heart Of A Killer (1993)
    3. Yngwie J. Malmsteen - “Damnation Game” from Perputual Flame (2008)
    4. Operation: Mindcrime - “Taking On The World (feat. Ripper Owens & Blaze Bayley)” from Resurrection (2016)
    5. Charred Walls Of The Damned - “Creating Our Machine” from Charred Walls Of The Damned (2010)
    6. Iced Earth - “Valley Forge” from The Glorious Burden (2004)
    7. KK’s Priest - “Raise Your Fists” from Sermons Of The Sinner (2021)
    8. Metal Allegiance - “We Rock” from Metal Allegiance (2015)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E18

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E18

S5E18 went out on Rebel Rock Radio on 5 May 2022.  I was in Clarens on a Guitar Clinic with SA Blues Maestro Dan Patlansky.

The show featured a fair amount of blues as you would expect, 'Hounds Loose' from Dan Patlansky and Rrude Mood' from Stevie Ray Vaughan.   I haven't got a gap to write this one up so I will post it and fix it later.....or not, if anyone cares about these write ups let me know.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E24

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E24

Episode 24 of Season 4 went live on air at 7 pm on 17 June 2021, kicking off with Billy Balloon Head' by Massive Wagons, which is guaranteed to get you into a good mood.  Next up some Iced Earth and a follow up on the Jon Schaeffer situation before we hit some indie type stuff in the form of Walking Papers and We Are Augustines,

As promised there was a lot of SA music on the show to make up for the last episode where SA music was a bit short-changed.  We had LA Cobra, Sugar Drive, Deadline, The Fismits, Springbok Nude Girls, and Sunken State all flying the local flag.   It is great to hear such a diverse range of rock from these bands, the talent in SA is amazing.  Incidentally, The Fismits is Rebel Rock Radio's own Mark Biagio's band,  check out their album Before the Hindsight.  Sunken State is my current favorite metal band, these guys are going to go far if lovers of metal get behind them.  Following on from Sepultura near the end of the show they absolutely hold their own and I explain why they are so good.

Generation X with 'Kiss Me Deadly', The Stranglers, and Social Distortion took care of the Punk and gave me a chance to take some cheap shots at the government.  W.A.S.P. with 'The Idol' off  Blackie Lawless's masterpiece Crimson Idol was a highlight for me as was revealing who played the brilliant Comfortably Numb-esque solo on that track.  There is lots more here so go ahead and check it out, all comments welcome, catch me on The Story of Rock and Roll Facebook page or on the website.

Artists featured:  Massive Wagons, Manowar, Iced Earth, Walking Papers,  We Are Augustines, Skid Row, Ratt, Kiss, The Rolling Stones, Accept, LA Cobra, KK's Priest, Halford, Kid Rock, John Mellencamp, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, W.A.S.P., Demon, Savage, Generation X, The Stranglers, Social Distortion, Sugar Drive, Springbok Nude Girls, Deadline, The Fismits, Volbeat, Gary Moore, Guns 'n' Roses, Blackberry Smoke, Sepultura, Sunken State, The Distillers & Mark Knopfler

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E10

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E10

S4E10 aired at 7 pm on 11 March 2021.  The show kicked off with Joe Bonamassa and a track called Bridge To Better Days which is something we should all be trying to build.   Breakdown by G 'n' R really went down well, one of those songs you really feel like listening to and it doesn't disappoint.

There was plenty to get your teeth into, punk from UK Subs, Ramones and the Clash, classics from ACDC, Megadeth and Black Sabbath, metal from Parkway Drive, Iced Earth and Pantera, and South African stuff from LA Cobra, Deadline, Rasskopleef! and The Uninvited.  Raaskopleef! was a first not only for TSORR but for radio in general.  It's a sort of cult band formed in Wellington in the Western Cape and this particular track called Elektrisiteit is a translation of Hunter S. Thompson's essay ' Electricity' .   Hearing Bon Jovi's 'You Give Love a Bad Name' again was great, it has been ages, great guitar work from Richie Sambora, no wonder they got so huge.  Other than that, a nice melancholy bit in the middle featuring Powderfinger, Hinder, Linkin Park, and Don Henley, and then we smashed it all up with 'Crazy Bitch' by Buckcherry, good times indeed.

Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, ACDC, Y&T, Guns 'n' Roses, Foo Fighters, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Disturbed, The Bloodhound Gang, Parkway Drive, Warren Haynes, Nirvana, Iced Earth, Megadeth, Bon Jovi, Tesla, The Clash, Ramones, UK Subs, Whitesnake, Desperado, LA Cobra, Deadline, Powderfinger, Hinder, Linkin Park, Don Henley, Buckcherry, The Dead Daisies, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Raaskopleef!, The Distillers, Black Sabbath, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pantera, The Uninvited

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E11

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E11

29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired.   It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-)  The joys of live radio.

It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp.  We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio.  I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night.  Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense.  Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.

The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing.  We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'.   All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs.  Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)

Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A. Guns, Bullet For My Valentine, the Clash, The Stranglers, Armored Saint, Joe Bonamassa, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M. Pearl Jam, Zakk Wylde, Bruce Springsteen, The Burning, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Judas Priest. Jorn, Fokofpolisiekar, Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, the Black Crowes, Motörhead.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S2E17

The Story of Rock and Roll: S2E17

Recorded once again behind the bar in Planet Rock on 7 and 8 August 2020.  I should probably have started a new season to differentiate these shows from the ones recorded at Mix FM.  It's such a crazy year, basically a write off so it is as it is.  This show was a struggle to put together, not sure why but I just couldn't get my rhythm.  It will probably be one of the more popular ones because that is often how it goes.  Full disclosure, there are some mistakes, wrong song titles, and a few other little gems but I won't point them out, see if you notice.  The thing I am finding is that because the show isn't live there is a massive temptation to edit.  I want to avoid this and just go with the flow (or lack thereof).  The beauty of a live radio show is that you get audience participation on the various forums and some requests and comments which lead to good radio.  This is tougher no question.  I think I need a guest on the show to give it a bit of additional energy.

You should find plenty to get your teeth into.  We kicked off with a great Van Halen track and in no particular order, some Accept, Marilyn Manson, ACDC, and Dio.  I thoroughly enjoyed finally getting the chance to play some Steel Panther.  They are way too foul-mouthed for radio so this was a perfect opportunity to give uber guitarist Satchel a chance to smash a few solos.  We took a listen to Tiger Woods, a real classic.

A highlight for me was Parkway Drive and Arch Enemy back to back with a seriously brutal twosome in the form of 'Crushed' and 'The First Day in Hell'.  It calmed down a bit with some Springsteen and some Tom Petty.  It's the first time we have had anything off Born In the USA.  It hasn't aged as well as the Tom Petty which was taken from Live Anthology, a 48 track live compilation spanning 27 years.  The big thing about this show is that I have recovered my CD's which have been in storage for a good couple of years.  Going through them I am finding plenty of hidden gems that are making their way onto the show.  A few examples included a track by The Diamond Dogs, the best South African band to never get discovered, and a stunning cover of 'Burning For You', nicely done by Iced Earth.  Oh and don't forget to check out the Johnathan Martin track, off Into the Nebulous Night, the album is a masterpiece.

Artists featured:  Van Halen, ACDC, Paul Stanley, Oasis, Parkway Drive, The Diamond Dogs, Accept, Thunder, Marilyn Manson, Skid Row, Mötley Crüe, Simon & Garfunkel, Arch Enemy, Iced Earth, Electric 6, The Gaslight Anthem, Dio, Johnathan Martin, The Misfits, Bush, Nickelback, The Black Cat Bones, Tom Petty, Steel Panther, Bruce Springsteen, Dio & The Rolling Stones

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 50

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 50

Episode 50, the final chapter of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show for the second decade of the 21st century aired at 21h00 on 26 Dec 2019.  The show was in an earlier timeslot so it's about an hour longer than normal, the music was great, but I struggled a bit to find the rhythm.  There are good reasons for this but I won't go into them here, let's just call it a year.  For TSORR it's been a steep learning curve, it's been exciting and really interesting.  Thank you all for the incredible support and for listening.  I learned a lot in this first year of podcasting and you can look forward to exponential improvements in Season II of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show in 2020.

On this show were some great moments, the music is always rock solid, excuse the pun.  Having an extra 10 songs allowed me to experiment with two tracks from the movies.  The first being Atticus Fetch (Tim Minchen) performing a track called 'So Long' off Season 6 of the Californication Series.  Then the final track of the show, 'The Flame Still Burns', performed by Jimmy Nail and written by Mick Jones, of Foreigner fame, is from a movie called Still Crazy.  All rock fans should see it and you will get some more detail about it on www.thestoryofrockandroll.com.  It is special, those who know will know.  We had a bit of a look at 2019 and I reckon that Mania is now my best Metal album for 2019.  It's from a little known band out of San Francisco called Hell Fire.

Artists featured included:  Def Leppard, Marilyn Manson, Ace Frehley, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Northward, Dio, Van Halen, The Sex Pistols, Blue Scream, Rose Tattoo, Coheed & Cambria, Newsted, Dirty Honey, The Wildhearts, Strange Fruit, ACDC, Arapaho, John Mellencamp, Iced Earth, Linkin Park, Iron Maiden, Skid Row, The Almighty, Alice In Chains, Bad Company, Desperado, The Clash, Cinderella, Airbourne, Atticus Fetch, Hell Fire, Strange Fruit, Sugar Drive, In Flames and The Wildhearts.
