Successful Job Sharing For Working Mums
Have you ever felt like you need to lean out of your career to manage the juggle as a working mum?
That you just can’t make the jigsaw puzzle work? If you have, then this episode is for you!
Going back to work after having a baby can be tough. For many women going back to work full time is financially, emotionally, logistically and sometimes physically impossible. So many women end up leaving their jobs and even their careers because they can’t find a way to combine their work and motherhood in a sustainable way.
When my guests Hannah Hall-Turner and Rachel Maguire were colleagues at the same company and had their babies 6 days apart, they shared their dream to achieve work life balance with their new family commitments. They didn’t want to leave their careers and qualifications they’d worked so hard for. But they also didn’t want to miss out on the precious firsts with their babies.
So they decided to put a business case to their employer to job share. They got it approved and it was a win/win/win. It gave them the work life balance that they had hoped for and the business benefited from retaining their top talent. As a result Hannah and Rachel felt a duty to shout about the benefits to help others. So they created their Instagram page, The Job Share Pair.
The Job Share Pair is an amazing resource of experience, best practice, useful practical tips and to educate and inspire others about the power of job sharing. This passion project has now turned into their innovative and successful coaching and consulting business.
And Hannah and Rachel are joining us today to talk all things job share and I can’t wait to dive into this conversation.

Nina Strassner, LL.M. is the head of diversity & inclusion at SAP Germany. Prior to SAP, Nina has been running her own law practice, specializing in labour law and also working as a mediator for 12 years. Maggy Pigott CBE: Job Sharing for 23 years & Beyond
Maggy Pigott CBE
Maggy was a pioneer of flexible working, joining the Government Legal Service, and working part-time from the early 1980s. In 1988 she was one of the first in Government, (and other sectors), to job-share and continued for 23 years, in seven jobs, including non-legal, policy, operational, and judicial appointments roles. With the same partner, Judith Killick, throughout, their last post was Joint CEO of the training organisation for the judiciary. On retiring they were thrilled to receive a CBE for their contribution to the administration of justice and for promoting, helping others, and role modelling job-sharing in the Civil Service.
Maggy continues to be a staunch advocate of the benefits of flexible working and job-sharing, including on social media and radio (for example, on BBC Woman’s Hour). She also highly recommends this way of working in her 2019 book ‘How to Age Joyfully: Eight Steps to a Happier, Fuller Life’ which has been endorsed by health and ageing experts – and the foreword by Dame Judi Dench!

Fascinating tidbits from the conversation with Maggy:
- 9:53: Very insightful definition of the “success of the job share”: People would call us the wrong names – they could not distinguish between us (even though we look very different)
- 14:14: Job sharing does not work for everyone. Key things to make it work:
- One has to be prepared to trust the other person
- Never unpick the other half – always move forward
- Good communication
- Partnership: Similar values & attitude to work
- Commitment
- Support by the organizational culture
- No big ego: You share the glory and the mistakes
- 21:26: Job sharing is a very advanced form of teamwork.
- 32:50: Best evidence of the success of a job share: It happened twice when we left one of our 7 jobs, we were replaced by two full-timers.
Sara Horsfall: Talent Partnering Technology & beyond
Sara Horsfall is the founder and CEO of Ginibee and has been specializing in optimizing and simplifying the creation and support of job share partnerships in the UK since 2013.
Ginibee's mission is to make job sharing more accessible and it has led to the launch of their unique retention platform in 2016.
The cloud-based SaaS solution helps organisations to retain talent and develop a more diverse talent pipeline by empowering employees to form job share partnerships.
There were so many interesting points that Sara touched on in this episode. She shared how she came to found Ginibee, how job sharing has evolved in the UK over time, and why she prefers the term “talent or knowledge partnership” over job sharing.
Sara pointed out important personality traits for job sharers, how to start a job sharing initiative in an organization and also the very interesting aspect that a talent partnership actually creates an increased energy level compared to one full-time person.
Sara also talked about Ginibee's involvement with 2020 Back2businessship - a part-time course preparing professional returners to go back into employment.
