Who are your top f**k, marry, kill James Spader characters? Why mar Annie Potts’s otherwise perfect Iona by making her fall for a bland 80s yuppie? What kind of fashion designer destroys two decent prom dresses to make a fancy potato sack? And why did we ever feel bad for Duckie? This is the episode where the die-hard romantics make themselves known.

It’s amazing when one simple childhood toy is unearthed in the Basement and it proves capable of bringing back a life-changing childhood memory!  Tom shares a milestone story prompted from treasures Julee pulls from a box marked “GLASS” -- there’s no glass in it at all -- it’s full of toys!  This episode also features much discussion of the hit-or-miss nature of various movie series’ fourth installments, some really fun impressions, vintage toys and a collection completed! 

Now in their forties, Julee and Tom Antonellis are reconnecting as brother and sister in THE MOST distant a socially-distant podcast can be in the United States.  While recording on each coast (and seeing each other over FaceTime) all the way from Los Angeles (Tom) to Boston (Julee), they start unearthing the core lessons, laughs and connections of their childhood.  Plus, Julee has to fight her fear of cobwebs while Tom enjoys the comfort of his office -- yet he CAN'T touch his beloved toys like she can.

Miranda joins Shane and Bryan to discuss the 1986 John Hughes film Pretty in Pink, starring Molly Ringwald, THE Jon Cryer, James Spader, Andrew McCarthy, Annie Pots, and an appearance by Andrew "Dice" Clay!

In this film, Ringwald plays Andie, a girl from the poor side of town. The film focuses on her "romance" with rich kid, Blane, and the unrequited love from her best friend, Duckie--played masterfully by Jon Cryer.

This is a film that could be better, but it's way better than a few other Hughes films we've discussed!

When Chris Turner was 12 years old he got a metal detector and fell in love with looking for history. Over the years, he would be on the beach or in a park and get approached by a frantic couple looking for their ring. Within minutes, he was often able to help them recover their ring.

These rings represent stories and relationships, and when they are lost, it feels as though the stories are lost with them. Chris started The Ring Finders in Vancouver to help people recover their rings and thus their stories. He documented these generous acts and caught the attention of a man in Illinois who invested in the mission.

Since then, Chris has built an online directory of 500 independent metal detecting specialists in 22 countries that go out in search of rings, most of which do it on a pay as you wish basis. We talked with him about the human nature of this work and spotlighting stories from the searches.
