St. Elmo's Fire - Late 90s: John Hughes's Brat Pack Grows Up

St. Elmo's Fire - Late 90s: John Hughes's Brat Pack Grows Up

What if 'St. Elmo's Fire' was recast in the Late 90s?

Wrap yourself in a cozy blanket, grab a pumpkin spice latte, and get ready for a trip down memory lane as we reminisce about the charm of 'autumnal movies' (since there aren't many Thanksgiving films) and deep dive Cory's personal favorite movie, the quintessential 80's classic, "St Elmo's Fire".

Join us as we dissect its nihilistic themes, impressive character development, and how despite initial misgivings, this film inexplicably grew on Cory and Nick. We also touch upon the undeniable allure of fall aesthetics, a beauty that we unfortunately don't get to experience in its entirety in Oklahoma.

Take an auditory journey with us as we uncover the trials and triumphs behind the making of the iconic "St Elmo's Fire". Get an insight into the gritty representation of post-college life struggles, the unique acting styles of the 'Brat Pack' actors, and the influential role of John Hughes in the casting process.

Brace yourselves as we also explore the casting possibilities for the 90's rendition of "St Elmo's Fire". This discussion is sure to leave you nostalgic and perhaps even inspire you to conduct your own star-studded debates.

Ep.190: Arcane Sounds From The Big Screen - Covers From Beyond!!!

This week, a world premier crossover event… Grab some popcorn and join your hosts this week as we check out songs from flicks as interpreted by other artists. Toss back that gorgeous mullet and shoot before you ask as we ride off into the sunset with the 1988 Brat Pack classic Young Guns. How many more enjoyable Westerns could we have watched instead of this? (Answer: all of them.) Is this movie the nail in the coffin for the Dermot Mulroney vs Dylan McDermott debate just because of how unarguably revolting "Dirty" Stephens is? Which is longer, the eventual heat death of the universe or this movie? Find out these answers and more life lessons under Terence Stamp’s tough love tutelage.

    1984: Sixteen Candles / Top 5 Movies

    1984: Sixteen Candles / Top 5 Movies

Sixteen Candles was the first great John Hughes high school comedy, and it was also the first movie Brad fell in love with as a youngster, watching it over and over through the 80's.  So it was an obvious choice for 1984, but what do Pete and Giff think? Are they as amused as Brad? Do we all feel Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall are the perfect 80's teens? Do the aspects that don't hold up so well anymore ruin the movie now? There's a lot to unpack here.

1984 was a great year for movies overall (as you'll see form our selections), and this is the episode where you can hear our favorites. So tune in now oh sexy girlfriend. You'll be saying, "I've never been so happy in my whole life!"

1985: The Breakfast Club / Top 5 Music

The next installment for 1985 focuses on Dave's choice, The Breakfast Club.  As 9 year olds we thought this movie would be hilarious like a 16 Candles sequel. However, we were soon sucked into a seriously dramatic film looking at the bleaker sides of teenage life and family relationships. Luckily, our lives were much happier than the ones portrayed on screen by the Brat Pack. As adults, what do we see differently now?

Written and directed by John Hughes, The Breakfast Club is just one entry in his amazing body of work. So we discuss our favorite John Hughes movies in this episode as well. After that we wrap things up with our favorite music from 1985. The Breakfast Club has a great soundtrack, so what better time cover all the great music from the same year. Can you hear us? Do you want us to turn it up??

    Dear Mr. Vernon,

The hosts accept the fact that they had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for continuing their totally 80’s summer movie reviews with the high school 80’s classic, The Breakfast Club, written and directed by John Hughes. With its breakthrough acting performances and sharp directing style, this movie has become an era-defining, pop culture phenomenon. The hosts pair the film with a delicious mimosa.

Join the hosts as they raise their fists in the air with a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Don’t you forget about them, especially while they celebrate this influential film.

The Legendary Bromances of Young Guns 2

The Legendary Bromances of Young Guns 2

    TONIGHT’S MOVIE? Young Guns 2

Billy the kid emerges from The New Mexican desert trying to clear his name for his part in the Lincoln County Wars in his youth, the authorities believe Billy the Kid was shot dead by his friend, Pat Garrett, and so Billy The Kid corrects the narrative and this movie jumps in as the surviving members of the Regulators reunite and get some new recruits as the governor sends a posse after them...Direct sequel to Part 1 and there are so many callbacks to Part 1, you should really watch them as a double feature.

Young Guns was a western starring the 80s brat pack and made for the MTV Generation.

It had Emilio Estevez as William H. "Billy the Kid" Bonney

    • Kiefer Sutherland as Josiah Gordon "Doc" Scurlock
    • Lou Diamond Phillips as Jose Chavez y Chavez
    • Charlie Sheen as Richard "Dick" Brewer
    • Dermot Mulroney as "Dirty Steve" Stephens
    • Jack Palance as the cattle baron

The sequel brings back Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland,  and Lou Diamond Phillips adds Alan Ruck, Balthazar Getty, and Christian Slater.

Also western legend James Coburn in a bit part, he was the original Pat Garret actor in Pat Garett and Billy The Kid, 70s movie with Kris Kristopersion by Sam Peckinpah.

The movies take a lot of liberties with history.  One character who died in Part 1 was alive at a famous shootout depicted in Part 2 and they attribute his death to another character in Part 2 who survived the shooting.

But the soundtrack got an original song out Of Bon Jovi, an award winning billboard chart topping song and if I could afford the rights I would have played it here … “Blaze of Glory,” This is actually on my favorite Bon Jovi album, which is inspired by the movie. I guess Emilio went to Bon Jovi and asked him to make music.

    Sixteen Candles

The Plotaholics are still taking on the 80s! This week we take a dive back to 1984 with the raunchy John Hughes classic Sixteen Candles

This 90-minute romp has a ton of unlikable characters. Samantha Baker’s sweet sixteen is completely forgotten about so her older sister can get married. Poor dear!

    This episode covers:

    • The problematic aspects of this film, from the casual racism to the casual date rape.
    • How comedy has evolved to the point that shows like The Office were able to find ways to deal with these same topics in a more self-aware way.
    • John Hughes's body of work: Overall good? Overall bad? Somewhere in between?
