Episode 42- Heathers and Jawbreaker (w/ guest Michael Castillo)

Our first guest, Michael Castillo, joins Desirae and Amanda as they get totally gagged with chainsaws!  They get into it on Nicolas Cage’s remarriage, the bullshit that is the term “date rape”, hidden foot fetish content, and thick loafer energy!  (note: we had some audio issues on this one particularly in the intro.  We start talking Heathers at 9:35 and the issue is mostly resolved by 11:10)

Episode 212: "Jawbreaker" You Got the Best of Me

Episode 212: "Jawbreaker" You Got the Best of Me

Liz Purr is the cat's meow. But now she's dead so let's watch a movie about it. Who doesn't want to watch a comedy from the 90's about a group of girls that accidentally murder their best friend who just also happened to be the most popular girl in school and then they try to cover it up with a makeover? That's "Jawbreaker" for you. We paired it with Candy, a delightful California Dry Rosé.

Movie Sync Notes: We watch the movie on Amazon Prime. We start "Jawbreaker" 5:52 into the pod, and push play on part two 1:00:20 into the pod.

Ep 4: Monsters - Into The Dark: Good Boy & Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus

Ep 4: Monsters - Into The Dark: Good Boy & Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus

Hello people!  We’re in the home stretch of spooky season 2020 and what a way to wrap up our Halloween themed shows than with Monsters!  In this episode, Heather covers the literary classic Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus, followed by Jeff who takes on Hulu original movie Good Boy, staring Judy Greer.  Heather and Jeff break down the story of each piece by piece, and then share their analysis.  They follow up their presentations with a conversation on “what makes a monster?”.

Written in the early 1800’s by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus is a gothic horror story which inspired centuries of macabre work.  A truly chilling novel, Frankenstein is much different than the green skinned, flat-top character you’re used to seeing every Halloween season.  Heather breaks down how Mary Shelley’s person hardships and grief fuel this story into something both personal and unique.

Did You Know?: The concept of Frankenstein was conceived in 1817 when Mary and her husband spent the summer with Lord Byron.

Good Boy is an entry of the Into The Dark series under the Blumhouse banner and exclusive to Hulu.  Staring Judy Greer, good boy is about a supernatural emotional support dog named Reuben who kills those who give his owner Maggie (Played by Greer) too much anxiety.  This dark comedy is carried by Greer, whose performance is both funny and a departure from what she is normally seen in.  Jeff carries us through the plot of the movie & points out the dark comedy that makes this movie an entertaining afternoon watch.

Fun Fact: Chico The Dog, who plays Reuben, is a Dachshund-Terrier mix.

Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather’s candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each monster movie, how Frankensteinand Good Boy compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. Share this episode with anyone who you think would enjoy it and let us know your thoughts on these monster movies!

Heather’s Rating of Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus: Super Nice – This book is a must read and a true literary classic

Before there was Mean Girls, there was Courtney Shane. Such an iconic film that totally perfected the slow motion hallway strut. With fashion can only be described as a late 90s technicolor acid trip.

    17 - Kidding

    17 - Kidding

Dave Holstein, creator and showrunner of “Kiddingjoins Scott Tallal to discuss this Showtime series.”

Dave starts off by explaining how the world was looking for a Fred Rogers-style character who is innately good (1:05) and the differences between the various biographical projects and the inspiration for this fictional character (1:58). He explains his personal reasoning for giving his lead character, Jeff Pickles, so many dramatic hurdles (3:05).

Dave delves into how “Kidding” came about, starting with his job as a writer on “Weeds” (3:56). Searching for another satisfying project, he ended up writing something for himself (4:24) with Jim Carrey in mind (4:52). Dave describes the journey “Kidding” went on as it was developed, passed around town, green-lit, and paused (5:24) before finding a unique way to get the script into Jim Carrey’s orbit (8:04).

Now in season 2, Dave explains how the show has grown and found its footing (9:32). He reviews plot points and the magic in making them (11:12). Dave discusses how in season 2 the backstories of the characters are deepened (13:03) and dives into Catherine Keener’s role (14:32). He talks about the creative ways the writers found to  explore the themes of the season (15:07).

Dave gives a rundown of the writers room (17:45) and reveals their creative process (18:36). He describes the atmosphere on set (20:58) and explains a particularly interesting shoot day (22:57).

He admits that he prefers television as a writer’s medium (26:08) and revels in the creative opportunity he has found himself in (27:28)
