World Class Baking from Slovakia to the Okanagan with Jan Petrasek

World Class Baking from Slovakia to the Okanagan with Jan Petrasek

Jan Petrasek is originally from Slovakia and moved to Calgary, Canada  in 2003 with his wife Silvia. They have three daughters age 15, 14 and 10.

Jan's first job in Calgary was at Boston Pizza. In August 2007 he opened his own bakery in northwest Calgary. 7 years later he opened his second store in Cochrane, Alberta and moved all of his  production there.

Eventually, Jan was supplying 20 stores with his products in Calgary including health stores, organic stores and European stores. In 2016 he decided move to Slovakia with his family and sold his business and house.

But his friend in Calgary told him that before he moves to Slovakia, he had to visit the warmest place in Canada. He told Jan to go to Osoyoos, British Columbia. Jan was planing to get there with his family but on the way there they encountered a big storm, so they had to stop in Penticton. Jan was on his motorcycle and his wife and kids were in the truck. So they stayed in Penticton for four days instead of going to Osoyoos.

They loved Penticton`s weather and all of the lakes. They moved to Slovakia, but it didn’t work out how they thought it would. After just one year they moved back to Canada and settled in Penticton. In November 2018, Jan opened his bakery in downtown Penticton.

Vegan Food that's Healthy, Delicious and Photogenic with Shaun Sanders, Renegade Kitchen

Vegan Food that's Healthy, Delicious and Photogenic with Shaun Sanders, Renegade Kitchen

Shaun Sanders of Renegade Kitchen knew he wanted to be a chef since the tender age of 4. Through his high school years in punk rock bands he’s always been a bit rebellious (just ask his parents). Growing up on a farm he was always drawn to cooking and the gritty rock and roll lifestyles of famous chefs only made it seem cooler and more appealing to him as a teenager.

Shaun attended the Culinary Institute of Vancouver Island for his formal training. He’s been in the business for over 10 years and in that time has worked at a wide range of establishments, notably Kingfisher Restaurant at Halcyon Hot Springs, Notch8 at The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, and the Terrace at Mission Hill Family Estate Winery.

In early 2018 Shaun decided it was time to throw aside convention and embrace his inner renegade. To abandon the life as a fine dining chef and bring kick ass food to the people on the street. To reject the idea that meat and dairy are even apart of the food pyramid, to forget what he’s learned about conventional dining, to create something completely unique, yet oh so familiar. Seemed only fitting that a renegade Chef would work in a Renegade Kitchen.

Definitely check out Shaun's amazing restaurant Renegade Kitchen at 467 Leon Ave, Kelowna, BC

Learning how to stand out in a marvelous but sometimes unaccepting world with Kendra McFarland

Learning how to stand out in a marvelous but sometimes unaccepting world with Kendra McFarland

Kendra grew-up on a hilly, luscious, rural Manitoba acreage 20 miles away from any town or village.

Being the youngest of 3 sisters in a supportive family, Kendra has always had lots of love around her. Naturally being bubbly and enthusiastic, the spotlight has always landed on her creating a sparkle so bright that it would never be dimmed!

Kendra has always enjoyed doing her own thing. She wasn’t heavily influenced by her peers, even in elementary school, which instantly made her an outcast. But in the end, every little girl wants and needs friends at school but being so free spirited and not caring what others thought, it was hard for her to find many friends to gel with. Even the friends she did make sometimes turned on her to side with the popular kids. Eventually, this lead to her parents offering for her to switch schools which ultimately meant going into another small community.

With Kendra’s sparkle shining brightly, she grew a sense of confidence, independence, and strength-of-self at a young age. Kendra loved the energy around singing and being in the spotlight so much that she would climb up onto stage at her older sisters’ Christmas concerts! Yet, again, stealing the spotlight from her sisters. From Grade 1 until... well, now, she has always been in choirs. She is a natural leader in her choirs because of her confidence, experience, and training from that tender age of 6. Singing in many local and provincial competitions and fundraising events, she grew a sense of leadership and even more confidence! She studied voice, piano (classical and jazz), saxophone (also and baritone), and enjoys jamming on her bass guitar around inspiring rock musicians. Through her choral experience, she has travelled across Canada twice and to Italy and China. One of the highlights was singing in a mass choir of about 900 people at China’s Pre-Olympic Festival with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra! Another highlight was being accepted to sing in the National Youth Choir as Manitoba’s only Soprano at the age of 17 even though there were other sopranos working toward Master degrees who also auditioned that same year. Keener, much? Yuppers!

Throughout her life, she has been shunned by strangers and questioned if she is sincerely happy by some of her closest friends. This positivity and confidence Kendra exudes works beautifully as a filter. Only the best, truest people are attracted to her and the others tend to turn away because they have a hard time relating and understanding how someone can be so happy.

After high school, Kendra completed college for Office Administration. The office thing wasn’t her jam. Then she started a career in herbalism while working at a traditional loose tea store for a few years which moved her into health food stores instantly. Her world of nutrition and health opened-up ten-fold! She worked at 3 health food stores and ran her own health company for many years. Advocating health and self-care will always be part of who she is!

After moving to Kelowna with his wife and kids, Russ decided to change gears and get creative with the apples on his orchard by starting up a cidery.  He learned the art of cider making from renowned cider maker, Peter Mitchell from England, and started to experiment with different apple blends.

The result was crisp refreshing ciders made at a beautiful lakeview setting in West Kelowna.  The cidery opened its doors to the public this past summer to wonderful reception.  Russ has plans to bring more delicious flavours and varieties of ciders to market next year and in the years to come.

How to see the world and its wonders through the eyes of a child with Marie Martin

We tend to do business with people we both like and trust. So my goal with this podcast is to help us get to know the amazing people of Kelowna on a deeper, personal level and not talk about business only.

Podcasts are a fantastic way to connect with people when we can't see them in person. The I Love Kelowna Podcast is an interview-style talk show about the fabulous and fascinating people that make up our great city and the Okanagan. In-depth, intimate conversations with entrepreneurs, executives, thought leaders, creatives, and anyone who has an interesting story to tell about how they're contributing to our wonderful home.

We've recorded over 160 episodes and there are currently ** 102 ** episodes you can listen to.

    SHOW NOTES for Episode #102

How to see the world and its wonders through the eyes of a child.

Marie Martin's journey started with her own desire to serve others and make a BIG impact on the world, however, she had a few beliefs, and health challenges to heal first.

She began a discovery journey of herself, and developed tools to overcome her own “Protection Programs” to relax and follow her higher purpose.

Marie fully reversed her health conditions, even though she was told she would be on medication for the rest of her life. Adrenal Fatigue and Hypothyroidism ( developed from a lifetime habit of hypertension as self-protection as a child living in a stressful environment) had crippled her health, life and freedom.

In her journey of self-awareness and healing, Marie transformed her life to one living in health and freedom. She even completed a gruelling mountain challenge to the top of a mountain at high altitude in just 1 hour 45 minutes! She had never considered this as a possibility for herself!

Then she created her business coaching others through their own journey to freedom: Marie Martin Coaching
