Merci Maryline !

S5E1 -- UMUK 515 race directors Ben Peresson and Richard Groome

S5E1 -- UMUK 515 race directors Ben Peresson and Richard Groome

Ben Peresson and Richard Groome from UMUK join me to talk about their ultra races and share their backgrounds in the sport.

Ben is a “black shirt” Norseman Xtreme racer and Marathon Des Sables finisher.  Richard has taken on The Brutal and rode every stage of the Tour de France with a magazine map as his guide.

Together, they, like many race directors, fell into organizing the UMUK rather than see it go away.  We discuss the direction of their events and they give an excellent description of what makes the Snowdonia region of Wales an exceptional place to host a 515 event.

This year's event is happening September 1 - 3, 2023.   You can follow on Instagram.

Army to Ultra with Tom Evans

Army to Ultra with Tom Evans

Tom Evans, a former British Army Captain, first made his mark on the ultra-running world in 2017, when he came third in the 251km desert ultra Marathon des Sables.
Despite entering on the back of a bet with a friend, his third-place finish was the best result any European had ever achieved in the history of the race.

Tom astounded once again in 2018, when he won the 101km CCC race at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) – the pinnacle of an incredibly successful racing year, which also saw him take the top spot (and break course records) at the Coastal Challenge Costa Rica and the South Downs Way 50.

Since then he has podiumed at the 2 most iconic trail races in the world; The Western States and the UTMB, so he has achieved a huge amount in his short time in the sport.

Claire and I wanted to chat to him about how his time in the army has helped him plan and execute races so effectively, how he focuses on tracking down the marginal gains and what data he does and doesn't find valuable in recovering from these monumental 100 mile runs.

Activism through positive movement with Sabrina Pace-Humphreys

Sabrina Pace-Humphreys is an award-winning businesswoman, an ultra-runner, a social justice activist, a mother of four and grandmother of three. She is co-founder and trustee of the fast-growing community and campaigning charity, Black Trail Runners, and is also a well-known ultra-marathon runner.

Sabrina took up running in 2009 as a tool to manage her post-natal depression and, nine years later, completed the Marathon des Sables - a 250km multi-stage ultra-marathon across the Sahara Desert. She has run many ultras since, including perhaps Britain's most brutal, The Spine Race - a 268 mile race along the length of The Pennine Way.  She is also now the author of  the book, Black Sheep: a story of Rural Racism, Identity & hope.

Claire and I wanted to chat to her about her running 'why', running for mental health, experiencing 'rural racism' and The Spine vs Marathon Des Sables!

    S3E10 -- Ultramarathon Man : Ferg Hawke

    S3E10 -- Ultramarathon Man : Ferg Hawke

Few Canadians have the ultra running resume of my Ohana guest, Ferg Hawke.  He has raced in Western States, Marathon Des Sables, and Badwater.  In triathlon, he represented Canada at the World Triathlon Championships and has competed in Kona for both the Ironman World Championships and the Ultraman World Championships.

Ferg has challenged all of the big names in Ultra and made friendships along the way.  He has compelling stories about his adventures and the people who have shared them.  As a top performer in the sport he also gives great insights into training and volume.

Now age 65, he has slowed the pace a little but the outdoor adventures continue and he still has another Chuckanut 50 on the horizon.

Desert Racing and Relationships with Elisabet Barnes

Having won races like Marathon Des Sables, the Oman Desert Marathon and the Big Red Run in Australia and setting multiple course records, Elisabet Barnes was an accomplished ultra-runner by anyone's standards; but why, having grown up in Scandinavia, has she achieved her success in the desert?

Elisabet retired from ultra-running during the pandemic and is an ultra-coach, but she has added a new (and very different) string to her bow by qualifying as a sexologist and is aiming to help people transform their relationships and upgrade their sex lives!

Claire and I wanted to get to the bottom of the secrets to succeeding at desert races, how to make a living from running, and how endurance sport affects our relationships.

Running the Marathon Des Sables (with Covid!) with Dan Kirby

Running the Marathon Des Sables (with Covid!) with Dan Kirby
When our host Dan Kirby - who’s day job is running The Tech Dept - announced his intention to run in the Marathon Des Sables (MDS), everyone thought he was crazy. Yet, on the 25th March 2022, he undertook this legendary survival race, dodging scorpions in sand dunes with all his food and equipment strapped to his back. And he completed it - raising £14,000 for charity KidsOut with his team. The MDS — known as “the toughest foot race in the world” — is a seven-day, 250 kilometre, ultra-marathon across the remote Moroccan Sahara (that’s the equivalent of six marathons). That’s tough - but Dan nearly didn't make the start line because after 18 long months of hardcore trail training, he caught COVID only two weeks out. Somehow he passed the PCR test to fly - but just how do you finish the world’s toughest footrace with a COVID 19-hangover? And what lessons did he learn on this “Sahara Fun Run”? Find out in this special episode - hosted by Joe Pack!

    Racing around the world:Tony Copeland-Parker

    Racing around the world:Tony Copeland-Parker

In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.

Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents.

His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race  hand in hand.

NB!

Jeg nevner i fleng: Maraton des Sables, Oman Desert Maraton, The Coastal Challenge Costa Rica, The Big Red Run og Everest Trail Race.

NWP 51: How To Run Effortlessly With Proper Form

NWP 51: How To Run Effortlessly With Proper Form

In this episode of NomadWolf, we are joined with marathoner, Ironman, ultra runner and master coach at Effortless Running, Erik Bohm.  Currently based out of Phuket, Thailand, Erik has mad significant strides (literally) in helping people find proper running form enabling them to run effortless in search of their next PB or distance.

We go over some of his biggest adventures like the Half Marathon Des Sables which took place in the Ica Desert in Peru.  That 120km 4 day stage race through sand dunes came with loaded with overcoming difficult moments leading to even bigger takeaways.  We naturally go into mental strategies to help with overcoming lows and even why some of the most "sane" people go for the most insane challenges.

Lastly, we cover his coaching program called Effortless Running.  By analyzing the form of many elites, Erik has broken down form into 3 pillars; lean, lift and sweep.  We cover the hindrances that stop people from progressing quickly in mastering proper running technique and ways to combat that.

Overall, this episode was full of wisdom nuggets and i'm glad to have had this moment with Erik.  Looking forward to crushing the 80k UTMB Thailand with him in a couple week.  I hope ya'll enjoy this one and take tons of value from it.

Episode 5: Mauro Prosperi - Desert Survival

On April 10th 1994, Mauro Prosperi took part in the Marathon Des Sables; which literally means Marathon of the Sands.

It’s dubbed the hardest foot race on earth; and on the 4th day, Mauro separated from his friend, determined to win it. He subsequently found himself in middle of a sandstorm. A sandstorm that lasted 8 hours.

After being lost in the desert for 9 days Mauro walked out alive.

Listen to hear how Mauro came to be in the race, how he survived and what happened later on an all new episode of Not Me, Not Today Podcast.

⚠️ Warning ⚠️  there is mention of suicidal thoughts and killing of animals in need for survival which may be triggering for some listeners.

    • Zijn burn-out

Let's go!

Daniel Gallo, Life is Not Easy!

#48 - Daniel Gallo calls himself a perfectionist in everything he does. He admits that sometimes he gets obsessed about the tasks he performs. He always wants to be the best. In his life it hasn't always been easy to just make it through. Perhaps that's what's given him the roaring fire driving him to always do better, but whatever it is, it's catching! I think you'll enjoy his story to become a great ultra-runner, father and husband.
