S5 - E5 - Scott Jenkins - A turning point at 30 leads to ultramarathons, Badwater, life lessons and smiling children

Scott Jenkins didn’t want to find himself at the age of 80 looking back at his life wondering what more he could have done with it, what more he could have achieved and the people he could have helped along the way.

Scott grew up in Wales and reached a turning point at the age of 30 where he decided to do something big, something that would have an impact on his life but also on lives around him. Himself and his brother decided to run 2000 miles from Boston to Austin, raising money and learning life lessons along the way.

Since that decision to run 75 marathons in 75 days, Scott has become an ultramarathon runner, a Badwater finisher, a high performing sales manager, a motivational speaker and has changed the lives of 93 children across the world, through Operation Smile.

Scott will inspire you to take the leap of faith you’ve been putting off and he’ll make it sound so simple… This is Scott Jenkins

Első magyarként 3x is futott a Badwateren, mindig második lett. Heat Training for the Everyday Runner

Heat Training for the Everyday Runner

"You can't outperform your physiology." In other words, you could have hit your volume, hit your workouts, be running the fastest you've run in your life, but if it gets too hot and you've not adequately prepared your body, that marathon abroad could end up being a disaster.

In this episode of the Run4It Podcast we're talking about heat training. Practical, accessible advice that every runner can use to help prepare themselves for upcoming races that might pose conditions hot enough to be a detriment to performance. Be that the Badwater 135, or your local half marathon that's ended up falling in the middle of a heatwave.

With Finlay deep in preparation for Kona - the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii that's notorious for cozy conditions - the Run4It Podcast's resident sports scientist is on fine form, clearly explaining how heat impacts physical performance, the body's mechanisms to combat heat, and how every runner can better prepare themselves to thrive when the rest of the field is melting in a sad puddle.

#032 Nikki Wynd | How To Win The Badwater 135 Ultramarathon

#032 Nikki Wynd | How To Win The Badwater 135 Ultramarathon

    Hello beautiful people

On today’s podcast we have the lovely Nikki Wynd. Nikki is a highly respected runner in the ultramarathon community. Starting her running journey in 2005 after the birth of her son, it wasn’t until 2008 when Nikki did the 100km Oxfam trailwalker that she really began to lean into this new area of her life. By 2011, Nikki was awarded the Australian Female Ultra Runner of the Year having broken the course records of 6 out the 7 races that she competed in that year. It’s safe to say Nikki has ran a lot in her time, with some of the most notable achievements being her completing Badwater 135, referred to by many as the world’s toughest footrace, three times, including being the female winner, first Australian female winner and record holder of the over 40 category in 2015, and in 2016 she set an Australian Record running 343km in 48 hours in the Australian 48 hour Track Championships. Nikki currently runs between 180km-200km per week.

What I personally love about this conversation is how Nikki has this beautiful balance between the importance of dedication and commitment, particularly when it comes to training, but also this touch of gentleness and enjoyment that she emphasises is just as significant. You would assume that a woman that has achieved so much, including winning the female category of a world’s toughest footrace, would be made up of grit and grind, but she shares the importance of drawing on positive energy, of placing intention behind a smile and of being motivated by family. It is in this conversation that we get to know Nikki at a deeper level; about how she is all about giving something a crack, putting it all on the line and giving her 100%.

If you are enjoying these podcasts, please rate, review, subscribe, doing this truly helps with this podcast and the incredible stories behind this podcast reach more amazing people like you, share with friends and family, become part of the To Be Human Collective, and I am certain your performance mindset will be up levelled after you listen in to this conversation with the phenomenal Nikki Wynd.

This World Record Holder's Incredible Story from Overweight to Ultramarathon Champ with Sandra Villines

This World Record Holder's Incredible Story from Overweight to Ultramarathon Champ with Sandra Villines

We have heard some incredible stories over the past year, but this one just might take the cake.

There is a prestigious record that had stood for almost 40 years before Sandra came and completely crushed it.

In 1978 - Mavis Hutchinson set a new transcontinental record by running from Los Angeles to New York in a little over 69 days.  It stood for 39 years, that's when Sandra set out on a longer and more difficult route (from San Francisco to New York) and completed it in only 54 days.

So is Sandra a track star with a pedigree of elite athletisism?  No!  In fact this humble, incredibly gracious athlete is a single mother who describes herself as overweight - and needed to make a change in 2013/2014...

Yeah - that's right!  From starting a new workout routine in the treadmill of her local gym - to winning the Badwater Ultramarathon a few years later in 2017 - a race in 100+ degree heat, where one false step can literally melt the shoes off your feet.  And then setting an impossible world record.

You're going to love this incredibly inspiring conversation holder with an incredible woman.

Dean Karnazes - Running Icon and "UltraMarathon Man" is Inspiring (and Freaking Funny)

Dean Karnazes - Running Icon and "UltraMarathon Man" is Inspiring (and Freaking Funny)

#49 - We have a real icon of the running world on today's podcast.  Not only is he a New York Times bestseller, but he's one of the few runners who has been able to transcend the sport into mainstream media.  We're talking Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, Kelly and Regis, Ted Talks, and he even had his own segment on the Stan Lee's Super Human tv show.

That's because Dean is actually super human - having conquered the worlds toughest races including Western States, Badwater, Spartathlon, and even a trek to the South Pole.  Dean has been a true ambassador of the sport - as you'll hear in this discussion - inspiring countless runners during his 50 marathon in 50 states is 50 days, running across the U.S. twice, running a marathon on every continent twice, and running the silk road as a special state department athlete ambassador.

And honestly - his story was really a catalyst that inspired me to get into this sport over a decade ago.

He details some of these incredible stories and his return to the gruelling Western States 100 mile ultra in his latest book - A Runner's High.  It's an incredible read that details Dean's mental mindset in such vivid detail.  It's such a fun book that goes far beyond the trail, and he tells stories that all runners can relate to.

And without further ado - here's our conversation:
