Confined In Gratefulness
During this episode, we get a little deep and personal. We discuss the relationship dynamics we experience with our immigrant parents. We touch on our gratefulness towards our parents, but how it also impacts our decision-making as adults. Our hope is that anyone who may feel the same way knows they are not alone!

41. Don’t Forget To Grieve, While You’re Counting Your Blessings (w/Paulina Isabel Almarosa. Part 2)
My guest this week is Paulina Isabel Almarosa. And this is part two of my conversation with her. Check out part one where Paulina shared her experience of growing up undocumented.
I want to put a trigger warning right here as we do talk about grief but I also want to invite you to open your mind and take a listen. And the reason is that we all have losses in our lives, and this year, we all lost something. And the thing with grief is that avoiding it doesn’t help, like any emotion it will demand a space. It will dig itself deeper in your mind and manifest in the most unexpected way in the most uncomfortable moment. But there are ways to honor your grief.
Paulina is a “grief keeper.” She is a social worker who focuses on healing the Latinx community.

ABOUT WE THE ALIENS PODCAST:
We The Aliens podcast hosts conversations with IMMIGRANTS from all over the world who came to the US and found their path to the American Dream. No matter what their status is - undocumented, DACA recipient, permanent resident (green card holder), naturalized citizen - all are welcome here. We talk about the challenges of leaving the home country, finding the legal path, finding a way to belong in the new world, building a career, finding love, and sustaining the family traditions. We talk about IMMIGRATION as a process of growth and self-discovery, adaptation, overcoming cultural shocks, and fighting racial and ethnic stereotypes. We talk about the great contributions that immigrants make to the American economy, culture, science, and society. We also feature stories of the first-gens, FIRST GENERATION American-born, the third culture kids, who have their own set of struggles growing in between the cultures of their parents' home country and America. We talk about their battle to find their identity and carve their path while redefining what American is. We talk about philosophy, psychology, culture, language, and history. We also talk about the news of the day, things that we all worry about - but in the context of the immigrant perspective. If you love NPR, This American Life, The Daily, and Pod Save America, if you read Forbes, LA Times, The Atlantic, and New York Times, if you watch John Oliver, Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert, and/or Trevor Noah, if you are a Twitter and Clubhouse addict because you want to be closer to people, if you, your spouse, your parent, or your grandma is an immigrant-alien and you know that you and they came to this country to build and contribute, and you can’t stand discrimination and belittling of their lives and contributions - this podcast is for you.
40. The American Nightmare, Not The Dream (w/Paulina Isabel Almarosa. Part 1)
Paulina Isabel Almarosa is a licensed social worker and the founder of Latinx Grief. Paulina works with a very touchy subject. I’d say, the touchiest of subjects - grief.

Episode 2: Traveling during COVID
Jovita Idar: The Journalist
If you didn’t know, this month is Latinx Appreciation Month. It runs from September 15-October 15th and I figured I’d take advantage to use this time to talk about a woman from history that not many people may know about. A woman who was considered to be a trailblazer for many, a great teacher, and the woman who stared down a group of Texas Rangers and forced them to turn back from where they had planned on ransacking her work.

Dr. Lisette Garcia, The Modern Mystic
Frank Vogt begins his healer hunt by interviewing a mystic master. So many of us have been isolated to some degree during the past few months. But what does it take to truly experience isolation for over 3 years? Lisette Garcia takes us inside the retreat boundaries to give us a taste of a long intentional spiritual retreat. Her experience left her profoundly changed, and she explains how difficult it was to enter, stay, and leave the retreat. In this age of "pop up guru's" and "mindful masters" (on social media), Lisette's profound experience is as a true mystic of authentic lineages.
Emil Gallardo "1, 2, 3 All Eyes On Me"
This month, Film Forward is highlighting filmmakers from the 2020 Los Angeles Diversity Film Festival.
In this episode, we interview Emil Gallardo, director of the gripping short film 1, 2, 3 All Eyes On Me.
1, 2, 3 All Eyes On Me follows a passionate teacher doing her best to manage her challenging class, suddenly finds herself trapped in a crisis that engulfs her elementary school campus, threatening the children in her care.
Emil and Nicholas discuss the difficulties in tackling the subject of mass shootings. We also dive into Emil’s very effective techniques for working with the child actors in his film.
As always, our guest helps us out with our favorite segment, Gimme Three, providing three films/shows that have inspired his work and his career.

28: Your Recovery Part 2 with Carolina Healton
The Mom Bod Series
Recovery from an eating disorder is certainly not a linear path, nor is there one way to tackle recovery. Each person’s journey of recovery is as individual as their eating disorder. We wanted to offer a space for three different Mom’s with various backgrounds and recovery journeys to share their story and honestly discuss how becoming a Mom added another layer to their recovery process. We are grateful for their vulnerability, their strength, and their courage as they navigate busting diet myths, letting go of body image ideals, coping with their feelings without using food, and showing up to their recovery day in and day out!
In Part 2 we welcome Carolina Healton, a Mom of two who is navigating her recovery while raising her boys. She explores the history of her relationship with food, her current recovery process, and how cultural messaging impacted her body image as a young girl.

Mireya S. Vela's Vestiges of Courage (Womanhood & Trauma Series)
What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? Mireya S. Vela is that woman. In this long-form interview, we discuss her art, creative nonfiction, social justice, motherhood, womanhood, being marginalized in the United States, and her new book, Vestiges of Courage: Collected Essays, which we, The Nasiona, are happy to be publishing in April of 2019.
Vestiges of Courage is a collection of personal essays that explores inequities and injustice. Raised between two cultures and two languages, Vela discusses how the systems in her family and in society worked to create an abusive environment that felt crushing, confusing, and hopeless. She delineates her experience of living through sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. This book is much more than a collection of experiences, though. Ms. Vela wants to know how and why abuse thrived in her family. She digs deep to understand why these things happened and how she survived.
