Layto: Dropping Out Of College, Creating Core Creative Team, TikTok Triumphs, and alternative psycho

On this episode of Grounds For Success, which also happens to be our last episode for season 1, we have the artist Layto!

From almost becoming an English major with dreams of law school to successfully strumming his way into the music industry—this episode is packed with a real-world story of how surrounding yourself with the right team can change everything for you as a creative. Layto generously pulls back the curtain on his journey, sharing insights into his early creativity, his life-changing decision to become a full-time musician and a hilarious story that led to his first manager (who has since been replaced by Garrett Ream)

Both Layto and I delve into our experiences working with individuals who've had pivotal roles in our creative journeys, as well as how important the power of perseverance and hard work can be for your career. We will learn about Layto's album "alternative psycho," an album I mixed and mastered, and the rest of the team who worked on it, including my friend Inverness who executive produced the album, and my friend Brandyn Burnette, who wrote and sang on several of the songs.

Lastly, Layto shares how he tapped into the power of content creation, using platforms like TikTok to gain exposure, and how a single song opened the doors to thousands of YouTube views and unprecedented opportunities. In the world of music, success is far from guaranteed.  Layto's story shows, that with self-belief, the right team, and a touch of serendipity, it's possible.

Jack Griffo: The Thundermans Return, Funny Auditions, Kid Baron, and The Ups and Downs of Hollywood

Jack Griffo: The Thundermans Return, Funny Auditions, Kid Baron, and The Ups and Downs of Hollywood

This week on Grounds For Success we have Jack Griffo, best known for his role as Max Thunderman in the hit TV show, The Thundermans, but is also the front man of his band, Kid Baron. In this episode, we explore his career trajectory, from his early acting days in Orlando to a recent movie shoot in the midst of the pandemic, and filming the new The Thundermans Movie. Jack candidly sheds light on his auditions, some of which are hilarious as hell, friendships with Ariel Winter, Lue Benward, Sterling Beaumon, and his decision to keep a low profile on social media, as well as his decision to move to LA at 13 and how he navigated his way into the acting scene in Hollywood.

Our conversation deepens as we dive into Jack's upbringing, his parent's separation, and how that affected him at an early age. Jack opens up about his journey through uncharted territories as a kid from Orlando moving out into the big world of Los Angeles where he didn't know many people. The discussion takes a successful turn as we reminisce about his audition for 'The Thundermans', and how having been friends and classmates with Kira Kosarin, who plays Phoebe Thunderman, worked in his favor. The richness of my conversation with Jack shows that being a professional in this industry for as long as he has gives you certain wisdom that only time can.

We then talk in-depth about how Jack got into music, how he and Kira had created a version of the Thunderman's theme song that was never released, and how he eventually formed the band "Kid Baron" as a way to invite the world to understand himself more deeply since he doesn't like to post his life on social media.

To cap it all off, Jack recounts his unique experience of filming "Don't Log Off," a film that I was also a producer on, at the height of COVID-19, and dives some into filming the brand new The Thunderman's Return movie. Through the highs and lows of his career, Jack offers fascinating insights into the world of acting, the importance of relationships, and the essence of staying grounded amidst success.

Siiickbrain: How To Transform Adversity Into Art, Authenticity, Modeling, and Skrillex

This week on Grounds For Success I have the most vulnerable and open talk I've had on this podcast with my guest, Siiickbrain. From a conservative upbringing to battling agoraphobia and an eating disorder to going on tour with Bring Me The Horizon, she has overcome difficult obstacles in a spectacular fashion which became the rocket fuel for her art. This podcast is very, very deep and is sometimes difficult to listen to because it is so open and vulnerable, but I implore you to continue to listen because, at the end of the day, her story can help everyone to become more empathetic towards others who deal with or have dealt with mental health struggles.

Siiickbrain's unique journey takes an exciting turn as we explore her makeup career, modeling career, and nightlife fun. We learn some about the people she called family when she first moved to LA and we also learn about her best friend, Tristan, and how dealing with his tragic loss shaped her journey. From this loss, Siiickbrain channels the pain and sadness into writing and screaming, and creates a unique sonic identity that catches the attention of Skrillex.

Bardo: Beauty School Dropout, Passion, Producing, and How to Cope With OCD Anxiety & Depression.

I've been looking forward to releasing this episode for a while now! One of my good buddies and closest collaborators, Bardo, from the band Beauty School Dropout is on this week. We journey through Bardo's ascent from a music-crazed youth in San Luis Obispo to his present day self touring with Blink 182 and getting ready to drop their monster single "beautiful waste" this Friday 8/4/23 with Colie, Beepus, and Hot Mike.

In this episode we unravel the captivating lifestyle of his band, their dream come true tour with Blink 182, and how his experiences as an executive producer on Lauren Gray's album have cemented our bond as collaborators. Bardo's story does not shy away from the hard truths of his personal life, including his battles with OCD, anxiety, and depression. How does he conquer these demons, especially while on the road? We dive deep into this question with a kismet story of how he met an "angel" of sorts on tour, his new mantra, "Your energy makes your day." We also talk thoughts on the future of the Grounds for Success podcast, which I left in there because I feel like it's manifesting the dream (for any of you out there who see the vision and want to get involved, reach out to me on socials!)

Our conversation wraps with a glimpse into Bardo's aspirations. Bardo's ambitions reach far beyond his band, from a desire to executive produce to a passion to be in film or TV as a villain. He wants to explore being able to channel his emotions through another form of art.

Should You Buy Our New Mixing Course "Mixes Unpacked"? (Your Questions, Answered!)

Should You Buy Our New Mixing Course "Mixes Unpacked"? (Your Questions, Answered!)

    Hello friends and loyal listeners!

As you hopefully know, this week, we've launched our first ever mixing course, Mixes Unpacked.

It will be available at an absolute no-brainer of a price during our early-bird offer (goes away March 30th).

We have zero doubt that this is gonna get you results, BUT since we've opened the doors, we got a couple of questions from people who want to make sure this course is a good fit for them (or not). So we'll do my best to answer them right now.

Can we buy this as a band and share the costs between the band members?

Yes of course! The program (and everything we do) is designed for self-recording artists and bands! Our goal is not to squeeze as much money as possible out of every single person, but to help as many bands/artists, as possible.

However, if you buy as a band, you'll still get one account and only that one account can access the program. But you can consume the content together and you can bring your bandmates to the Q&A session. We won't kick anyone out for doing that and we just trust you that you will only share it with your bandmates and not anyone else.

So, sure, be smart about that. If you split the costs between all the band members, each of you will pay less for this course than you've probably spent on coffee or pizza last week.

    ---

I'm busy and it's gonna be a while until I record or mix again. Should I still join now?

Well that's up to you. Just know that prices will go up next week and we might even close the doors entirely for a while after that.

You will need some time anyway to go trough all the material, prepare and implement everything and you have lifetime access, including future updates or additions.

Also, the live Q&A session will be recorded, so you don't have to be there if you can't make it. You can leave questions in advance, so we can answer them and even if you don't, you'll get insane value out of the replay and our answers to all the other questions.

So you can go through it at your own pace and there's no risk if you decide to jump on the opportunity right now.

    ---

How much time do I need to set aside for this?

You can go through the video course at your own pace. The Q&A is the only scheduled thing, but there's going to be a replay. How long the Q&A takes, depends on how many questions we get.

Again, if you can't participate live, don't worry. You can submit questions in advance and watch the replay of the meetup later.

There's a lot that we show you in this course and it's pretty dense, so it will take you at least a few days until you've watched everything and took notes and then it's up to you to practice and implement everything.

Whether you do it in real time, or binge through and then implement step-by-step is up to you. However you end up doing it - In the end you will make better records. Period.

    ---

There is some more questions we answered, but you'll have to listen to the episode to hear them!

    ---

Hopefully these answers help you determine if Mixes Unpacked is the right fit for you.

You can get all the details (including what sweet bonuses you get) right here.

And remember you can try out the program risk free for 30 days to make SURE you love it and that it's the right course for you.

    See you on the inside!

    -Benedikt & Malcom

P.S. Join before March 30th and lock in a lower rate than everyone else will pay in the future.

    --

Are you feeling overwhelmed every time you're starting a mix? Do you go back and forth a lot, constantly questioning your decisions?

For a lot of self-recording artists the answer to those questions is "yes".

Do you know when the mix is actually done? Do you know what needs to be corrected in the raw recordings you're working on? And do you know what needs to be done first, second, third, etc.?

The answer to these questions is often "no".

Malcom and I (Benedikt) give you a break down of our “mixing systems”, telling you exactly how we approach our mixes. Step-by-step.

This is all about having a good process and knowing what you're trying to achieve in each phase. So that you can then be creative, completely focus on the task at hand and consistently make progress towards you desired end result.

Understanding the whole mixing process better and coming up with a system or some kind of repeatable approach for yourself will help you

    • stay focused
    • be more creative
    • make better decisions faster
    • serve your songs better
    • actually finish your projects

And of course your mixes will sound better, too.

Mixing Engineer Gives GOLDEN Advice For Beginner Producers...

Mixing Engineer Gives GOLDEN Advice For Beginner Producers...

A lot of musicians don't know how to work the ins and outs of a DAW (like Pro Tools or Ableton), and many vocalists that record themselves daily don't even have time to learn how to engineer at a professional level...

That's actually one of the reasons why I first got started with engineering in the first place...

I really wanted to grow my beat business, but when I was first starting out, engineering in my recording studio was the thing that was providing me with a livable income - not making beats.

And it turns out William had a similar experience when he was first coming up.

I asked him how he was able to bring leads into his studio as a newer engineer and he told me that he used something similar to a referral system...

He offered hole punch cards that would incentivize his clients to come back again and again - for every 10 holes you got punched on your card, you'd get an hour of studio time at no cost.

This system basically made people want to book more time just so they could fill out their cards, which subconsciously made them feel like they were "completing a task".

    Pretty smart, right?

During our conversation, William brought up some additional tips for engineers and producers that helped him grow his business to the scale it's at now...

You can use those same tips to bring more rappers and singers into your own business as an entrepreneur and music producer - go check out the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast!

    Pascal Guyon- 3 Grammy Nominations/Songwriter/Coder/Developer

It begins from a tiny village in France with fresh vegetables in backyard and we hear about Pascal as an incredibly young child and literally how toys and cabinets were the grassroots of his career. His creative side that led him to practicing piano for 10 hours a day for how long????

The turning point that led him from being a performer to be a producer. How MY SPACE…Yes, My Space was huge in getting noticed and eventually getting to the United States, but he produced a song that ended up in a Ben Stiller movie all from France!

His first two weeks in LA are mind-blowing, not even knowing who Heavy D was and how he is fluid in all genres of music. This transitions from music to stock trading and programming to being part of HyperloopTT which you can check in links below. His decision to be a public speaker and a video game that pays him but costs you NOTHING to play!

You get a great social media tip, hear about his typical day (this is good) and advice for all you musicians.
