How To Make Beats That Artists Actually Want w/ Keef Keyz

How To Make Beats That Artists Actually Want w/ Keef Keyz

Knowing this is super important because pretty much everyone in the music game will tell you that a lot of success comes from being in the right circles with the right people...

...but almost nobody tells you how to get in those circles, so I'll tell you right now - it starts with YOU.

Literally... noticed how I started this email?

I started it with the letters "Y-O-U".

That's because people want to know what's in it for them and when you're starting out a conversation talking about yourself (i.e. using the words "I" or "me"), then it's a pretty big turn-off.

I've been dripping this strategy into all of my messaging - from emails to Facebook ads to Instagram posts and everything in between - because people want to know what's in it for them.

Just as Keef said to me in a recent conversation, "it's not about a single strategy or a single ASK, but it's about the overall relationship you build with that person and you're missing what that relationship could potentially offer you when your ASK is focused on getting ONE strategy from someone". 💎

You can check out some more gems 💎 from that conversation that I recorded on the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast.

Keef talks about reframing the conversation to lead with your personality so that you can close more impactful relationships in your music career so it's definitely worth checking out!

6-Figures & 100k Subs Making Drill Type Beats

6-Figures & 100k Subs Making Drill Type Beats

One of the reasons I think he's been able to do this successfully is because he identified a niché pretty early on, which was showing people how to make drill beats.

As drill artists like Pop Smoke started making waves a few years back, Jay realized that there was a demand for drill type beats, which separated him from many of the other producers making generic type beat tutorials on YouTube.

This is one of the reasons why you might see certain producers and entrepreneurs suddenly blow up - they find a niché that's beginning to build momentum and then they capitalize on it. 🤯

So if you wanna learn how to find your own niché that you can start serving right now on YouTube to grow your own music production business, OR you've already found your niché that you'd like to serve and monetize further...

...check out the newest episode of the Midi Money podcast to start using the same strategies that Jay Cactus used to grow a 6-figure business and YouTube channel by making drill-type-beat tutorial videos for music producers.

I hope you get some value out of it!

How To Network In The Music Industry The PROVEN Way | MMP w/ DJ Swivel

How To Network In The Music Industry The PROVEN Way | MMP w/ DJ Swivel

But what does "leading with value" look like and why are so many producers and people in our community getting it wrong?

For starters, it doesn't look like this:

"hey I'm a huge fan of your work and wanna work with you at no cost. what can I do for you..."

I get messages like this on Instagram all the time. So does my friend DJ Swivel, who's been able to work with Beyoncé, Jay-z, Kanye, Fabolous, and many other big names.

Swivel told me that he really doesn't know what to do when people send him messages like that because he usually doesn't know what work he needs to give people in the first place.

Instead, to start working with someone you look up to, try offering something upfront at no cost.

More specifically, try to find a hole in someone's business or try to improve on something that that person could be doing better, and then offer something tangible to them.

In my own business, Legion Beats, one of my team members started working with me simply by messaging me some hashtags that were outperforming the ones I was initially using on Instagram.

From there, he started giving me more pointers and tips that would help me improve engagement on my social media account and yielded some pretty good results!

    See what I'm talking about?

To get some more ideas on how you can lead with value to start working with more influential people, watch this podcast until the end!

Inside he mentions one way you can lead with value if you want to start working with him too 👀

This Is The NFT Future For Musicians | MMP w/ Illmind

This Is The NFT Future For Musicians | MMP w/ Illmind

In my opinion, being a really good entrepreneur and business owner fundamentally comes down to being really good at solving problems...

Basically seeing holes other people don't see and knowing how to efficiently fill them.

As music producers, we're constantly being bombarded with other people's problems and it's up to us to figure out how to solve them for those people.

One very basic example of this in our everyday lives comes down to making beats: rappers and singers need instrumentals to write over and that's where our job comes in.

But we shouldn't stop there, especially because there are TONS of ways to provide value at a deeper level for the people we work with...

One way Grammy-Winning super producer, !llmind, is doing that is by building a community of creatives with NFT's and web3 technology.

I recently talked to him on my podcast, where he told me he's launching this project called Squad of Knights...

If you follow him on socials, you might've seen him talking about it already, but his idea for this community is pretty next-level if you ask me❗

He's built out NFT's specifically for creators to inspire a community of collaboration and partnered with a bunch of recording studios to help creatives come together.

People who hold his NFT can get studio time at no cost and can network with the people inside his community...

"Need artwork for your next beat tape...❓There are graphic designers inside his private community that can help you with that"

"Need studio time❓ Go record everything you need at one of !llmind's partnered studios..."

The logistics of all of this might sound confusing, especially if you're new to all of this NFT, web3, and metaverse stuff...

...but after seeing what influencers like Gary Vee and Omari MC have done with all this new technology, I had to chat with !llmind to see how music producers in my community can level up with all of this❗

So... we broke it down for you on the newest episode of MidiMoney Podcast.

Also I know I might be a little annoying with all this web3 stuff lately... 😬 but I wanna make sure you're tapped into all of it because it most definitely is the future of the music industry and I want you to be hearing about all of it FIRST before everyone else.

Mixing Engineer Gives GOLDEN Advice For Beginner Producers...

Mixing Engineer Gives GOLDEN Advice For Beginner Producers...

A lot of musicians don't know how to work the ins and outs of a DAW (like Pro Tools or Ableton), and many vocalists that record themselves daily don't even have time to learn how to engineer at a professional level...

That's actually one of the reasons why I first got started with engineering in the first place...

I really wanted to grow my beat business, but when I was first starting out, engineering in my recording studio was the thing that was providing me with a livable income - not making beats.

And it turns out William had a similar experience when he was first coming up.

I asked him how he was able to bring leads into his studio as a newer engineer and he told me that he used something similar to a referral system...

He offered hole punch cards that would incentivize his clients to come back again and again - for every 10 holes you got punched on your card, you'd get an hour of studio time at no cost.

This system basically made people want to book more time just so they could fill out their cards, which subconsciously made them feel like they were "completing a task".

    Pretty smart, right?

During our conversation, William brought up some additional tips for engineers and producers that helped him grow his business to the scale it's at now...

You can use those same tips to bring more rappers and singers into your own business as an entrepreneur and music producer - go check out the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast!

This *TOOL* Saved My $179k Beat Pack Launch

This *TOOL* Saved My $179k Beat Pack Launch

Recently he and I have been collaborating on a song contest launch for rappers and singers and have been relying on SMS text messaging for a huge chunk of our revenue.

One strategy we tried out before we launched was using an early-access waitlist to build excitement for our audience.

We let everyone know that they had about a week to get early access, and we did that by sending out a few texts and emails.

Within the first day of opening access, we made over $50,000. Could you believe that?

I attribute a lot of that success to SMS and don't think we could've gotten anywhere close with email alone.

That's because with email, open rates on average are actually pretty low and most people don't read the emails that come into their inboxes.

Yes, emails are still effective and will continue to be for the foreseeable future, but only 20% of people will actually read your emails if you're lucky.

(Personally, I know many people who don't even have their email notifications on and/or have "junk" email addresses that they never check.)

On the other hand, +90% of text messages that are sent are actually read. One of the reasons for that is because people are literally texting all the time - for many, it's their primary form of communication.

When someone sees a text message, there's also a good chance that person is already in their messaging app before the notification pops up - not to mention texts are usually way shorter and take much less time to read than email.

That being said - I personally think SMS is the way forward for entrepreneurial music producers and beat makers.

    Wouldn't you agree?

This Crypto Could Make You MILLIONS As a Music Producer | MMP w/ Omari MC

This Crypto Could Make You MILLIONS As a Music Producer | MMP w/ Omari MC

At face value, they might not seem like they're worth much to most businesses (and to be honest I didn't see much value in them at first either)...

...but after Omari started explaining them to me, it's no surprise why some music producers like himself and Illmind have already started to leverage them.

They're sort of like a stock that you would trade on a stock exchange, but for influencers and creators.

So let's say I created a Creator Coin for my music production business, Legion Beats; if you wanted to support Legion Beats, you would put capital towards the Legion Beats Creator Coin.

The value of the coin goes up and down, kinda like stocks fluctuate in the stock market, but with Creator Coins there's an added incentive for investing.

That's because you can incentivize people who support your Coin, and one way you can do that is by rewarding people and giving them access to special content and deals only they have access to.

    Isn't that pretty sweet?

I'd say so - I can't think of many other currencies that have this much power to build brand loyalty.

DISCLAMIER: It's still a very new concept, though!

That's why I highly suggest you start learning about it ASAP so you're ahead of the competition when more people start adopting it.

Start taking your first steps by watching my discussion with Omari in the newest episode of the MM Podcast.

What Music Industry Artists ACTUALLY Want? | MMP w/ Young Exec

What Music Industry Artists ACTUALLY Want? | MMP w/ Young Exec

Some of the things I hear pretty often are, "How do I get my beats/songs on this blog?" or "How do I get a ton of streams on my beats/songs?"...

...but in reality, these usually aren't the things that will create a long-term and sustainable career in the music industry.

Instead, knowing your customers' needs and wants can be way more effective.

One of the things I learned from my friend The Young Exec (who's been able to network with people like DJ Khaled and Rick Ross) is that, as a musician, you don't always need to provide value through your music, especially when you're first starting out.

In fact, if you're only pushing your beats and songs to people who don't know you, it could backfire on you and your brand because you haven't yet earned their trust AND most people already have their go-to places to find great music.

So what's the solution...how do I get new customers and fans to find my beats and songs❓

One way to do this is by offering products and services people need first, and then pitching your music after, and here's what that might look like. 👇

If you're a producer who wants to target rappers and singers, you could offer a few beats upfront at no cost, and then charge for custom exclusives or a beat pack you've put together at a low cost.

Alternatively, if you want your beats/songs in front of people who aren't musicians and just listen to music recreationally, one of the things The Young Exec has recently recommended is to offer COVID-19 face masks (and bundle them with your music).

And while he explains his process, he emphasizes the fact that musicians need to shift their mentality from wanting to get into the industry to building a business that leads with value first.

Do you agree with this mindset shift?

How To Go VIRAL On TikTok As a Music Producer in 2021 | MMP w/ Robbin Marx

How To Go VIRAL On TikTok As a Music Producer in 2021 | MMP w/ Robbin Marx

Over the years, we've seen social media platforms come and go, so it's important to take action whenever there are opportunities available.

And right now, there are a ton of opportunities available on TikTok, especially for producers❗

The problem is, it can be really intimidating to get started on a new platform, so I talked with a TikTok growth expert (who's been able to grow his account to over 100k followers seemingly overnight) to get some tips and tricks for growing musicians. 👀

His name is Robbin Marx, and one of the biggest TikTok ninja tricks that he's been teaching is to use the comment section on the app to your advantage.

Instead of leaving traditional text replies, you can use video replies in the comments section of your videos to engage your audience more personally.

    And speaking of audience engagement...

You can also ask your audience to help you make a beat/song by asking for feedback on the music you're working on.

Questions you might wanna ask include👇

💭 Does this snare drum work here❓

🤔 What is this beat missing❓

    👀 What sound should I sample next❓

All of these questions are important because the more you can get your audience invested in what you're doing...

...the closer they feel to you and your brand and the more they care about what you're doing.

You can even take this engagement strategy a step further by offering something for 🆓 to the person who gets the most-liked answer in the comments section of your video.

This type of relationship-building quickly turns regular followers into devoted fans and/or customers who trust you and will come to you for services and products.

So if you wanna quickly build an engaged audience that trusts you on a quickly-growing social media platform, go check out the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast  while you can still grow your music production business organically.

Facebook Ads Guide For Music Producers 2021 | w/ Lisanne Murphy

Facebook Ads Guide For Music Producers 2021 | w/ Lisanne Murphy

From my own experience, it's always best to use platforms like Facebook, Instagram YouTube, or even BeatStars as a way to bring an audience to you, which you can then move into your own ecosystem.

And for me, that might look something like this👇

1). Someone clicks on my Facebook/Instagram ad and goes to a page on my website.

2). Then, I give that person something (usually beats or a training workshop) in exchange for a name, email address, and/or phone number.

3). I then use that phone number and email address to stay in touch and build relationships with the people I work with.

This whole process is part of a bigger system that I developed (called The Producer Funnel), and it's one of the biggest assets to my production team, Legion Beats.

The reason why it's been so beneficial to my business is because it allows me to build relationships with my customers at a high level in my own ecosystem.

And recently, I wanted to get a closer look at how advertising experts use social media platforms to promote their products and build their own audiences...

...so I sat down with advertising specialist Lisanne Murphy to diagnose some problems that music producers (and online businesses in general) are having with their online ads.

She thinks that success in your online business today in 2021 is largely based on how well you can communicate with your customer.

Kinda like what I said earlier with The Producer Funnel, Lisanne, is a strong believer in creating your own platform built to serve your audience.

And while email and text messaging are two of the most effective ways to build community, Lisanne also suggests using tools like Facebook Groups, Slack, or even Discord to keep communication open.

She believes that the goal of running Facebook and Instagram ads should be to get people off of Facebook and Instagram, and onto your own platform so that you can serve them down the road and not just today.

So, if you're new to advertising and are thinking about running some ads for your producer business...

...I'd suggest going into it with the intention to first build trust and relationships with your customers.

How To Produce Beats That Artists ACTUALLY Buy? MMP w/ Wav Formation

How To Produce Beats That Artists ACTUALLY Buy? MMP w/ Wav Formation

If you're making beats for rappers and singers, maybe you want to ask your clients why they became musicians in the first place.

You will get a lot of insight into your customer that will help you create strong relationships.

You might also discover a common thread in the answers you get from each person, which you can then use in your messaging to help sell your beats.

Or if you're making mix templates for producers, it might be important to ask why that producer uses a certain DAW over another one in the first place...

Whatever you decide to create and sell, it's important to know the pain points you're taking someone away from.

And if you'd like to learn the questions that Wav Formation asks when he's on the phone with prospective customers, check out the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast, where we go in-depth about selling on the phone for producers.

I think that knowing how to sell your services is one of the most valuable skills a producer could learn how to master, so make sure you check out that episode asap!

This Is Why You Should Stay Independent As an Artist | MMP w/ DJ Flippp (Part 2)

DJ Flippp talked with me about how he also was unhappy at a certain point in his life due to some conflicts in his personal and professional life...

One of the conflicts he briefly touched on was the fact that he could get sued just for talking about a certain topic... he literally could not speak about it or he'd get in huge legal trouble.

However, he told me as much as he could about the mess that he was in, and he told me how he now stays away from any potential trouble with his music career on the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast.

Former Manager of Taylor Swift Shares Secrets To Success In The Music Industry | MMP /w Rick Barker

Former Manager of Taylor Swift Shares Secrets To Success In The Music Industry | MMP /w Rick Barker

He emphasized the fact that a lot of small businesses only exchange products and services for 💵, and that there are so many other businesses that do that exact same thing...

After that, we then talked about how people can start treating their own music careers as actual businesses and what separates those who are succeeding in music from those who aren't.

The main thing that Rick sees with those who are succeeding is the fact that they understand the fundamentals of the industry AND have built foundations for themselves.

    Here's what that looks like...👇

    • 📝 understanding and properly collecting publishing
    • 💽 using tools like Sound Exchange to claim your streaming royalties
    • 📲 putting your music to work for you by releasing it on the right platforms (instead of leaving it in storage where it won't be able to collect royalties for you...)

After reading all this, do you feel like you've correctly built the foundation for your music career?

Making $400k By Selling Beats Online with a Contest, Exact Strategy & Technique | w/ Anno Domini

👉 Start Your Own Contest at: https://midimoney.com/contestsecrets

We've used this snowball effect collaboratively to create viral contests and launches, where we basically have people sharing our contests and launches at no cost

Basically, it works like this: 👇

    • We create and launch a contest for rappers and singers, who are incentivized to share the contest on various social media platforms through a rewards system.
    • Rappers and singers share the contest on their own social media accounts, and get rewarded for sharing by getting access to additional beats or bonus material provided by us.
    • As each person shares the contest with their followers and friends, more people see it... and then those people share it with their followers and friends...

The cycle continues, creating a giant snowball that organically continues to get bigger and bigger.

And the best part about this whole process is that it creates an army of affiliates to do all of the sharing for you, essentially at 0 cost...

That's basically the Cliff Notes version of this whole process, though, so if you'd like to get a closer look at using the snowball effect and wanna learn how to apply it in your own business, AD and I dive into it on the newest Midi Money Podcast episode!

Create LIFE CHANGING Opportunities In The Music Industry | MMP 24 /w RIZR

On the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast RIZR confessed to me that he'd only been DJing for two weeks when he was asked to open as a DJ for Illmind...

This sounded like a great opportunity to get recognition in the music industry, but he'd never spun a record before, and he only considered himself to be a producer at the time.

However, since he realized that this one opportunity could open up more doors for him in the future, RIZR decided to grab a turntable and start practicing.

He ended up performing at that show, which led to even more gigs with Illmind and opened up other shows for him, including one with Just Blaze who was a longtime idol of his.

From there, RIZR has been able to land a Netflix placement and has been apart of projects that charted on iTunes, which he talks about on this episode.

Remember, big futures often disguise themselves as just small opportunities in the present, so it's important to be aware of every door that's opened in front of you, because you never know what they'll lead to. 🚪🔑

How To Network With BIG Names In The Music Industry? | MMP 23 w/ Realistic

You've probably heard that the music industry is all about building relationships, and that who you know can determine your success in the game, but it's a challenge to be able to even work with some of the industry's best.

People commonly think that the quickest way to get to someone who has status in the game is by providing that person with value...

And a lot of times, this is true, but what exactly does "providing value" to someone mean❓

To answer this question, I decided to connect with Realistic on the newest episode of the Midi Money Podcast, where he shares how he was able to work for Sound Oracle and other names like Just Blaze and Talib Kweli.

According to Realistic, here are 3 ways you can provide value to someone so that you can improve your status in the music game...👇

    • 💎 Save time for that person
    • 💎 Save 💵💵 for that person
    • 💎 Make 💵💵 for that person

These might seem like really simple concepts, but they're valid, and a lot of producers tend to get them wrong.

So, if you want to learn exactly how Realistic was able to start working closely with big names in the music industry by getting these 3 networking principles right, make sure you listen to the whole podcast to find out!
