Ever found yourself lost in the nostalgic beauty of a classic film, or captivated by an unexpected love story set in the heart of World War Two era America? Join us, as we grab the popcorn and journey back in time to the quaint fishing town of Monterey, the setting for this overlooked gem. Based on John Steinbeck's novel, Cannery Row, this episode is a deep-dive into the unique characters, exquisite set design, and the timeless love story between Doc (Nick Nolte) and Suzy (Debra Winger).

Get ready to appreciate the underappreciated, as we unravel the charm of this critically panned yet endearing film. We discuss character actors like M Emmet Walsh and Harry Dean Stanton, highlighting the vulnerability Nick Nolte brings to his character. We pay tribute to the film's deeper messages and soulful musical interludes, arguing that despite its box office bomb, Cannery Row, holds a charm that most definitely makes it worth watching.

In our final act, we dissect the symbolism and characters within this cinematic masterpiece. From drawing parallels between Frank McRae's character and Steinbeck's iconic Lenny Small, to discussing the eternal optimism of the characters set in the early 1940s backdrop. We also dig into the intriguing life of Doc and his determination to live life on his own terms. This roller coaster ride through Cannery Row is sure to leave you with a newfound appreciation for this overlooked classic. So sit back, relax and let's take a stroll down memory lane together.

    Warrior (2011) - Full Review

Episode 42 - Warrior (2011) - Full Review Movie Podcast

"Warrior" is a 2011 American sports drama film directed by Gavin O'Connor. The movie follows the story of two estranged brothers, Tommy and Brendan, who enter a mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament each for their own reasons.
Tommy, an ex-Marine with a troubled past, seeks revenge against his father who was abusive to him and his mother. Brendan, a former MMA fighter, is struggling to provide for his family after losing his job as a teacher.

The movie's story is well-crafted and keeps the viewers engaged throughout. The intense action scenes in the ring are well-choreographed, and the emotional moments between the characters are equally impactful. The acting performances of the lead actors, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, are top-notch and bring the necessary depth to their characters.
The supporting cast, including Nick Nolte as the father of the two brothers, delivers great performances that add to the film's overall quality. The movie's soundtrack is also noteworthy, adding to the film's already gripping atmosphere.

"Warrior" is not just a sports movie; it's a family drama that explores themes of forgiveness, redemption, and the bond between siblings. It presents an honest and gritty portrayal of the MMA world and shows the physical and emotional toll it takes on its fighters.

Overall, "Warrior" is an excellent movie that seamlessly blends action, drama, and emotion. It's a must-watch for sports enthusiasts, movie lovers, and anyone looking for an engaging and inspiring film.

    34 - פסגת הפחד | Cape Fear

    North Dallas Forty

    North Dallas Forty

North Dallas Forty is considered a sports movie classic.  If you can tell us what it's about, please reach out to us on Twitter at @slowpitchcast.  It's confusing, raunchy, and full of male buns.  We watched it so you don't have to.  Also, Mac Davis wears some weird clothes, including a pair of Jockeys, and one scene without a pair of Jockeys.  If this is an accurate account of professional football in the 70s, count us out.

Next episode: The original version of The Longest Yard

The Longest Yard (1974) is streaming on Amazon Prime if you have it, but I'm sure it's at your local library too.

    Cape Fear (1991)

    Cape Fear (1991)

Just in time for Halloween, let’s review one of the craziest horror thrillers from the ‘90’s which came out almost thirty years ago and was directed by the Master himself Martin Scorcese….as his follow-up to a little film called Goodfellas.

It stars Robert DeNiro as ex-con Max Cady who is out for revenge against the attorney Sam Bowden who failed to keep him out of jail 14 years earlier played by Nick Nolte.  Sam’s wife and teenage daughter also get put in harm’s way, they’re played by Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis – everyone just brings it with lights-out performances as both Lewis and DeNiro were nominated for Oscars at the time.

Come out, come out wherever you are!!!

    Warrior (2011)

    Warrior (2011)

Happy 10th Anniversary to what might be the greatest Rocky movie ever but….not actually featuring Rocky nor even in that universe.

This film centers on the Conlon's, two estranged brothers played by Hardy and Edgerton, who are both competing to be the best in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) – yes this is a sports drama but it’s so much more!

It stars Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Morrison, Frank Grillo, and Nick Nolte who was nominated for an Oscar for his excellent raw performance.  It’s also directed by Gavin O’Connor who also gave us the terrific Miracle in 2004.
