597 Mastering Communication and Leadership with Karen Knab
The road to successful leadership is paved with exceptional communication skills, and this episode lays out the map. We break down the science behind why we react the way we do and how understanding the four communication styles—aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive—can revolutionize our interpersonal relationships.
The episode begins with Marvin introducing Karen and her background as a marriage and family therapist before transitioning into executive leadership coaching. Karen emphasizes the importance of leadership skills, even for solopreneurs, as they are essential for managing customer and vendor relationships.
We venture into the realm of the human brain, dissecting how our prefrontal cortex and amygdala dictate our communicative behavior, particularly under stress. This neurological tour sets the stage for understanding why we react the way we do and how to harness the power of assertive communication.
The conversation then delves into the different components of communication - verbal and non-verbal. Karen highlights that non-verbal communication, which includes tone of voice, body language, and appearance, can make up 70 to 90% of our overall message. This becomes particularly important in written communication, such as emails and text messages, where non-verbal cues are absent.
The episode concludes with a teaser for the next episode of the podcast, where Karen will discuss the key to assertive communication.
Summary:
- Nature's prefrontal cortex and amygdala affect communication styles, with the former enabling rational thought and the latter triggering fight or flight responses.
- Aggressive, passive, and passive-aggressive communication styles impact relationships and conflict resolution through verbal and nonverbal behaviors.
- Assertive communication is key for effective interactions, influenced by self-awareness and leadership development.

Study Session #19: Flagging
Ever wondered how a simple handkerchief or a pair of Doc Martens can tell a captivating story of identity and preference? Brace yourself for an enlightening journey through the intriguing world of non-verbal communication within the LGBTQ+ community. This episode promises to deepen your understanding of this lesser-known aspect of queer culture, commonly known as flagging. Discover how a color-coded bandana or the pocket it's tucked into can signal different preferences, and how earrings and keys play their part too. We also explore how flagging has evolved with pop culture influences, specifically hip-hop, and its role in the often delicate process of coming out.
But that’s not all! We also decode modern signaling trends you may have noticed but never understood. Carabiners, not just for rock climbing anymore, are now a proud symbol of the lesbian community. Doc Martens, a fashion statement for some, for others they’re a subtle indicator of non-heterosexuality. Even nail polish isn't just about vanity, but can signal relationship status. Ever seen an upside-down pineapple and wondered why it's upside-down? Well, it’s a sign of polyamory. And who would've thought that the color of a Loofah could carry a special meaning in certain adult communities in Florida! Prepare to have your mind blown as we reveal the hidden language of symbols within the LGBTQ+ community. Tune in and let's start this fascinating exploration together!

Communication: Understand Verbal and Non-Verbal Cues
Communication takes many forms and is both Verbal AND Non-Verbal. Studies suggest that approximately 65% of communication occurs nonverbally and most only remember or retain between 25% and 50% of what they hear.
Many are oblivious to understanding nonverbal cues, therefore miss out on critical information. Most don't realize what information they are giving with body movements. Some are more profound than others,
Non-Verbal areas of focus include:
- Eyes - Are they directed at you? Where do they look when answering a question?
- Head movement. Are they nodding in agreement?
- Lips. Do they smile? Is it a sincere smile or forced?
- Feet. Where are they pointed? When seated, what is happening?
- Legs. Which way are they crossed? Are the knees closed or open?
- Arms. Are they crossed in a defensive posture?
- Hands. What are they doing?
Too many people focus only on what is happening verbally and are only focused on themselves, rather than having a true conversation. They often more focused on what they want to say rather than the messages in the conversation.
Verbally, folks could be so much better if they practiced some basic skills:
- Listen - Listen - Listen.
- Shut up and wait until the other person finishes speaking. Don't talk over them.
- Ask open ended questions and ask follow up questions.
- Paraphrase what you think you heard and get agreement.
- Don't try to One-Up the speaker. It's not a competition.
- Don't turn it around and try to make it about yourself.
- Don't dismiss or minimize the other person's concerns as a way to sooth them.
- Don't lecture, Insult or give advice unless it's requested.
- Follow up if they are hurting and don't commit to an action you can't do.

Leading Through Transition: Tips for Leaders in Times of Change
No, this is not another post about the seven leadership lessons we can learn from geese. Yes, it does come from watching geese, but it’s something that others have overlooked, and it has to do with leading through transition. And as usual, a simple demonstration by mother nature carries powerful lessons for us about how to lead in chaotic, unsettled times.

- According to The Cornell Lab, snow geese are possibly the noisiest of all water fowl. The audio clip of a flock of snow geese comes from SoundBible (public domain); for best effect, set volume to 10!

Leaders and Con Men: Should We Follow Their Example?
Con Men work in the shadows and employ every trick in the book to get people to do what they want. As leaders, we’re trying to get people to do things, too.
