02: Motherhood Transformation - Motherhood Mondays

02: Motherhood Transformation - Motherhood Mondays

Becoming a parent is a life-changing experience, especially for mothers who carry the responsibility of nurturing a new human being. However, despite the magnitude of this transformation, we are ill-prepared for the journey ahead. In this podcast episode, we explore the challenges of motherhood, the need for education and preparation, and the joys of raising a child.

    This episode shares:

    • Becoming a mom is mentally and emotionally challenging and it's okay.
    • Adjusting to life with a newborn and the challenges it brings.
    • Receiving help, without asking for it is a gift.
    • The importance of self-care and seeking support from loved ones

Becoming a mother is a transformative experience that requires education, preparation, and support. Despite the challenges of parenthood, the joy of raising a child and the bond that forms between parent and child make it all worthwhile. By sharing our experiences, we can empower and inspire expectant mothers to navigate motherhood with confidence and joy.

    -  why giving children lots of information to help them process what’s going on is so important
    - how to talk to a highly sensitive child that shuts down and a great game to play to help them open up

Making Home and School Work in Harmony

Making Home and School Work in Harmony

There are a number of key ingredients that make classical Christian education work, most importantly, the role parents play in their child’s education during the hours at home. One of the growing forms of classical Christian schools is the hybrid or collaborative schools model, a form of schooling that instructs children at school a few days of the week and partners with parents to continue the prescribed teaching at home on the other days. If you aren’t familiar with this model, you will be intrigued, as there are many new and growing collaborative schools and quite a number of 5-day-a-week schools now adding a hybrid option. My guest panel today not only provides some first-hand history and overview of hybrid schools, but they share best practices in managing home life that ensure continuity between home and school, in all kinds of settings.

Stay tuned for more enlightening discussions on classical Christian education, and join us next time on BaseCamp Live! Remember to subscribe, leave us a review, and reach out to us at info@basecamplive.com

Five Parenting Styles Identified in Child Psychology

Five Parenting Styles Identified in Child Psychology

These are the Five Parenting Styles currently used in Child Psychology today based on the work of Diana Baumrind, and Stanford researchers Eleanor Maccoby and John Martin.

    The Supporting and Nurturing parent.
    The Authoritarian parent.
    The Permissive parent.
    The Disengaged or Uninvolved parent.
    The Overinvolved or “Helicopter” parent.

These are the five styles identified by child psychologists. Of course, we all think we’re the supporting and nurturing parent… most of the time…
If we’re honest though we know we have weaknesses or weak moments.
How do we detect these behaviours in ourselves and how can we make the adjustments we need to make?

In this episode Kate talks with an expert in early learning and development about the parenting styles that can be the most helpful for you.

Radical role-modelling... the key to parenting with Emma Holdsworth

Radical role-modelling... the key to parenting with Emma Holdsworth

So much of our parenting triggers + challenges hark back to our own early, formative years. Our attachment to our own parent or caregiver impacts our relationships, how we form identity in adolescence, how we cope with stress + our resilience... so how do we feel more like we're nailing this parenting thing?

Emma Holdsworth from Treehouse Family Counseling has spent her entire adult life supporting families to become the best parents they can be, connecting them to their core values as a parent, holding space for new Mothers as a postpartum doula + helping burgeoning families with her vast experience as a sandplay therapist + counsellor.

Emma firmly believes doing our own inner work and exploring ourselves more deeply, examining our own past – is actually the key to parenting education. In this episode Emma talks to us about the formative years of childhood + that  behaviour (of any kind) is just how kids communicate their needs, as parents we can stuff it up by taking it super personally!

She also advocates what she calls radical role modelling – be that which you want for your kid, yourself. It's easier said than done, we know... this is what I love about Emma's realistic approach to shifting our shit. It’s a process, don’t be afraid to show them the process or strategy behind trying to build sustainable + healthy change.
    THAT is radically modelling adulting.
