Hot August TV: Uncoupled, Black Bird, What We Do In the Shadows, The Last Movie Stars

Hot August TV: Uncoupled, Black Bird, What We Do In the Shadows, The Last Movie Stars
Andy and Diane cover a lotta territory in this half-hour: comedies UNCOUPLED, the Peacock special WOULD IT KILL YOU TO LAUGH? ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING amazing Season 2, and the en fuego FX comedy WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS. Then we move to the killer drama BLACK BIRD and the retro PAPER GIRLS. Finally, we talk about Ethan Hawke's wonderful docuseries THE LAST MOVIE STARS, which focuses on one of Hollywood's most talented and gorgeous couples, Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman.

125: The Secret of My Success (1987) and The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

125: The Secret of My Success (1987) and The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

From the mailroom to the boardroom is the theme this week. Michael J. Fox's "The Secret of My Success" (1987) was a film young Adam liked and  still does. Matt thinks it needs a little recasting and definitely a new soundtrack. "The Hudsucker Proxy" (1994) was a  box office disaster for the Coen Brothers, but they followed it up with "Fargo". An homage to 50's romantic comedies, Matt was bored and thought it a little over the top, which was what Adam really liked about it. Both would have recast the Paul Newman role.

No show next week. Perhaps, Matt might not be so grumpy on the next episode.

    Thanks for listening!

Season 6: Heists, Cons, & Grifters - The Sting (Episode 30)

Season 6: Heists, Cons, & Grifters - The Sting (Episode 30)

In the thirtieth episode of Season 6 (Heists, Cons, & Grifters) Kyle is joined by a panel of guests, editor Kristi Shimek, script supervisor Katy Baldwin, and actor Ben McGinley, to discuss the penultimate light yet stylish heist film about comraderie, revenge, and the constructive beauty of crafting the aura of cinema in George Roy Hill's The Sting (1973).

    Slap Shot (1977)

    Slap Shot (1977)

It’s that time of year when the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, it’s early May so WHAT does that mean?  Of course, it means the NHL Playoffs are just beginning!  And what better way to commemorate the kick-off for professional hockey’s playoff season than to revisit one of THE Most Beloved Hockey Movies of All Time….which happens to star one of THE Greatest Movie Stars of All Time, Paul Newman.

He stars as player/coach Reggie Dunlop of the minor league hockey team, the Charleston Chiefs – they’re a raucous group filled with goons and/or boozers but they MIGHT have a chance to win this season thanks to their latest addition of the Hanson Brothers.  Jeff Carlson, Steve Carlson, and David Hanson co-star as the Hanson Brothers in this raunchy, raucous sports comedy directed by the legendary George Roy Hill who previously gave us Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid along with The Sting.

Before You Go: A Friendly Call with Film Critic Kathleen Carroll

Before You Go: A Friendly Call with Film Critic Kathleen Carroll

For our Season 1 finale, we honor the words that often end our show: "Might be time to pick up the phone. There's no time like the present! What a gift."

Before You Go co-hosts Nicole Franklin and Bryant Monteilh introduce this episode with the delightful and colorful reviews of Kathleen Carroll as remembered in her book My Life in the Dark. Kathleen is a retired film critic from the New York Daily News who made so many industry friends and connections she decided to bring Hollywood to her hometown of Lake Placid, New York by co-founding the Lake Placid Film Forum.  Nicole's time with Kathleen helped guide her career as an award-winning filmmaker as she took many cues from Kathleen's love of film and networking with legends behind the scenes.

We hope this episode reminds everyone that reminiscing with friends could be the most relaxing and rejuvenating part of the day. Thank you for listening to our storytelling series. See you in Season 2!

Jordan and Brooke are joined by writer and friend of the pod Phil Tice for 1969's romantic comedy, er, serious Western. Pick your poison: Newman or Redford? How many classic character actors can you pack into one film? Why did critics originally pan this masterpiece? And do we think the boys secretly escape to Australia and start a life together? (Spoiler: yes).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
For our seventh episode studying the film series which once asked us to go ape, we find ourselves in a state-of-the-art- circa 2011 anyways- digital playground with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the first of the most recent trilogy of reimagined primate action. Listen as we first discuss some recent films we've seen, including Robert Altman's 1979 uncharacteristic bore Quintet and the newly released Don't Breathe 2, which of course sparked a brief conversational revisit of the canny 2016 original. Upon finally getting around to the 2011 simian film, we weigh the various means through which this seventh entry retooled the franchise for yet another new generation, attempt to traverse across the tricky minefield that is James Franco as unscathed as we can, and do our best to come to terms with the likely permanent arrival of computer-generated apes. The Color of Money
We follow up last week's discussion of the beloved billiards classic The Hustler with its sequel, 1986's The Color of Money! Listen as we walk through our very first Martin Scorsese picture while admiring the aged wine that is Paul Newman, the burgeoning superstardom of Tom Cruise, the delights and dangers of life spent in smoke filled pool halls, and an appreciation of the reality that *all* roads eventually lead to Atlantic City. The Hustler
We ride the cheese and settle all outstanding debts with our discussion of 1961's The Hustler! Listen as we gush over the inimitable Paul Newman, love to hate the steady villainy of George C. Scott, suppress our tears over Piper Laurie, deeply consider Murray Hamilton's Kentucky accent, and generally appreciate the very presence of Jackie Gleason. Actors: now more than ever!
