Costco Kirkland Signature Pinot Grigio Challenge! (Same as Pinot Gris? The perfect summer wine, side-by-side taste test, could the wine snobs be wrong?!?)

Seriously - $4.99?!? How good can a wine actually be at $4.99?!? Well, we are here to tell you, and you may just be surprised by what we have to say! In this episode we do a side-by-side comparison of the Costco Kirkland Signature Grave Pinot Grigio with two other easy to find Pinot Grigios to see how it stacks up. Pinot Grigio is a wine that some wine snobs are down on, but we’ll tell you confidently - don’t listen to them. A good Pinot Grigio is like a warm summer day, and there are few wines that are better with fish and shellfish. Hailing from the northern areas of Italy, Pinot Grigio is the most popular white wine in Italy, and the 2nd most popular white wine in the United States for a reason! And, we’ll admit that while sometimes Costco’s Kirkland brand can seem too good to be true, it is often surprisingly high in quality especially in comparison to the price. Talk about high QPR! If for some reason you think you are not a Pinot Grigio fan, check out the episode, and we think we can change your mind. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2022 Costco Kirkland Signature Grave Pinot Grigio, 2021 Kris Pinot Grigio, and 2021 Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio.

Costco FTW: Kirkland Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cotes du Rhone

Costco FTW: Kirkland Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Cotes du Rhone

In this episode, The Wine Pair tastes and reviews wines from Costco’s own Kirkland brand. Listen to Joe and Carmela talk about why they love Costco, what they love to buy there, and why Joe has serious issues with Starbucks. In a nutshell, Starbucks sizes are too large, their bagged coffee smells like fish, they have created an alternate universe around the macchiato, mispronounce biscotti, and, most importantly, Howard Schultz sold the Seattle SuperSonics to another city! They review three Kirland wines, and rate them somewhere between 5 and 7 out of 10 on their rating scale. There are some winners in this group - and a few that they think are great for parties and cookouts! Wines reviewed: 2020 Kirkland Signature Friuli Pinot Grigio, 2020 Kirkland Signature Sonoma County Chardonnay, 2020 Kirkland Signature Cotes du Rhone Villages.

Spain Uncorked: Indigenous Varieties with Ferran Centelles

Spain is home to hundreds of native wine grapes! The country was a safe haven for vitis vinifera during the last Ice Age causing a boom of developing grape species that are part of the tapestry of this wine making country. As we explore some of Spain’s interesting range of indigenous varieties we are joined by Ferran Centelles, Spanish Wine Specialist for jancisrobinson.com.

This is Spain Uncorked, a Special Miniseries from Wine Pod.

Ferran is a WSET Diploma level graduate and Sommelier who has worked for the world-renowned El Bulli and is still owner Chef Ferran Adria's "wine guy" for his new project El Bulli 1846. Ferran received the WSET 2019 Outstanding Alumni Award. He also sits on judging panels at international wine competitions and is WSET Certified Educator.

    Look for the Helpers

    Look for the Helpers

This week, Joanna from St. Louis calls into the Tiny Victory Hotline to tell us about a tiny victory she found in the immediate aftermath of a harrowing car accident, and another caller found herself in need of help after getting stuck in the snow in Utah. This episode is a good reminder that no matter how shaken your faith in humanity might be, things might not be as dire as you think. Listen to us this week if you need reminding that there is such a thing as the kindness of strangers.

Next week’s show is inspired by the discovery of a snack bar in Pompeii, and Laura and Annabelle want to hear from listeners who might be as delighted by this news as they are. If that describes YOU…

Call the Tiny Victories Hotline: (323) 285-1675

We want folks to share their tiny victories on our hotline because, frankly, we’ll assume we’re just talking into the void every week and nothing matters. Prove us wrong. Did you finally do that thing you were putting off? Tiny victory! Reconnect with someone you haven’t been in touch with for ages? Victory! We only ask that you try to keep messages to under a minute so we’re able to play it on the show.

If you prefer, you can record a tiny victory on your phone and then email us the audio.

The BEST white wine grape is...

The BEST white wine grape is...

We asked a simple question on social media: what are your top 3 grape varieties for white wine? The reaction...blew us away, with a torrent of fascinating responses from all around the world featuring more than 100 different grape varieties - not to mention fighting talk, bonding, football analogies and cheating. We got a bit carried away with this podcast - it's our favourite one so far - but there is something for EVERYONE here: laughter, tears, David Beckham, sherry, scholarship (in the form of the fascinating expert Dr José Vouillamoz and his definitive tome Wine Grapes) and controversy. Talking of which, we give the DEFINITIVE verdict on the best white wine grape variety...
