    Are You Planning Your Vacation?

    Are You Planning Your Vacation?

Well, it is a sudden end to Season 6 of “That They May All Be One”…but for very purpose of declaring the praises of the LORD JESUS CHRIST!

The main message I always want people to hear is the gospel, the very best news ever!  Regardless if you are a non-believer or a believer (especially a believer) the gospel is great amazing eternal news!!!!

This last episode of season 6 I make a comparison of planning a vacation to seeking the Kingdom of GOD.

Take time to watch or listen…it could save your life!

    Philippians 3:10–14 (NASB95): 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
12 Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Luke 14:26–30 (NASB95):  26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
27 “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
28 “For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?
29 “Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who observe it begin to ridicule him,
30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ “

INTRO: Hello, Imperfect Leaders! Our family recently held a reunion to celebrate my son, Ezra’s, graduation, and my father’s significant birthday. We were all together – it was really very nice. In fact, a few weeks earlier, my nephew, Henry, graduated from college. Many of us traveled to be there with him. While we were at his graduation, we had an opportunity to go the campus art gallery to see his senior thesis. Henry’s art technique uses something called automatic drawing, which challenges the artist to fully let go of their consciousness and seek something called the flow state. It is in that flow state that much is revealed. Our thoughts, our fears, our wishes – it’s what an artist, Phillip Guston, calls “letting go of something inside.”

Looking at his artwork, I am so impressed with Henry’s willingness to be vulnerable and honest about life. As all of us are human, we all struggle with the voices in our heads that say we are not smart enough, or work hard enough. We allow others to define us. This week (and every week), my guests are willing to share their experiences and give insights into what they learned.

This week’s guest is good at this. This week’s guest is not my typical guest. Sometimes, I invite education-adjacent leaders to participate in the podcast, but my guest isn’t that, either. Here’s the thing. The more I host this podcast and the more I have opportunities to coach corporate clients as well as superintendents, the more I see the similarities when it comes to leadership. Superintendents have to foster trust-based relationships with teachers, principals, parents, children, their boards, and the community. Business leaders have similar relationships they must build and maintain. Superintendents, just like business executives, must cultivate high performing teams. My guest is Doug Younger, and he is not a superintendent, but an entrepreneur and CEO. He has some good insights around his three values: planning, passion, and optimism. Thanks for tuning in!

BIO: Today on an Imperfect Leader, Douglas Younger III is my guest. Doug is an accomplished technologist in cutting-edge industries such as software as a servicer (SaaS), artificial intelligence, virtual reality, powered-exoskeletons, implantable medical devices, and advanced medical imaging. He is the Founder and CEO of 3STEPS4WARD, a marketing company, he’s a lecturer at Cal State University, and he’s the host of Twist of Fate, A Small Business Podcast.

It’s a great episode full of incredible insights! Thanks for tuning in!

Your One Wild & Precious Life

Your One Wild & Precious Life

Mary Oliver's poem, The Summer Day, does not appear in this episode but my thinking is inspired by her question: since this is the only life we have, what will you do with yorus?

How will you spend your days?

Leaders in higher ed often don't feel in control of their days. We have so much to respond to, and so many people we're accountable to. It seems right to spend our days attending to all those things, and letting them all shape our priorities.

But that can easily turn into a life where instead of accomplishing what you care about most, you've just reacted to, and for, others.

    There is a better way.

It's not productivity hacks - although that's part of it. It's not purely self-care and boundary-setting - although that's part of it. It's not strategy and planning -- although that's part of it.

It's taking the time to articulate what you care most about, and then organizing your day to make space for you to focus on those things. It's integrating your family and personal life into your one big picture of how you spend your time. It's understanding which activities will bring you closer to your dreams. And it's letting go of everything else.

Today I talk through my approach to organizing my days (and life) this way, and invite you to join me. I've put together a FREE PLANNER that will guide you through this, AND I'm offering a FREE WORKSHOP so we can work through the planner together.

Download the planner here, and then join me on Friday June 2 at 11 am central for a FREE WORKSHOP to design the days of your dreams. 🧡

A Budget is a Moral Document

A Budget is a Moral Document

This idea has pervaded my life since childhood, but I hadn't heard (or remembered) the phrase until I saw it last summer, painted starkly on a building mural near George Floyd Square in Minneapolis. For days I couldn't get the phrase out of my head.

Budgets reflect values - that's not news. I've seen this at play in institutional budgets on every campus where I've worked. It's at the heart of our debates every budget cycle. As leaders, we have a responsibility to ensure our institutional values and our distribution of resources are aligned. And when they're not? We should be honest about that.

After seeing George Floyd Square, I began to wonder what our lives could look like if we approached all our budgets through this lens. How would we allocate our money? Our time? Energy? Our love?

Today I invite you to think about the resources you have and what you do with them. What do you save and spend? What do you cling to out of fear or worry? What do you generously distribute? And why? What's behind all those choices and feelings?

This is just one issue I help women leaders explore in my new course, Leading with Clarity. The course gives leaders the space and community that makes it possible to think deeply and connect the dots between our personal values and priorities, the ways we plan, and how we lead our teams. 40. Why do we not do what we say?

    40. Why do we not do what we say?

Join me today as I share with you three ideas on why we don't do what we say and what to do to start.  Why is that we have lofty goals, intentions and resolutions at the start of every year and by February we revert back to doing what we have always done.  The hardest part about transformation and change is not doing the same thing that you did the day before.  How do we break the habit of familiar?  How do we break the habit of comfort?   How do we break the habit of ease?  Lets start doing what we say we are going to do by implementing these 3 ideas into our life.

My hope is that we are creating a community by way of this podcast.  I wish I could get this work into the hands of every woman I know. Maybe you could help me. A New Kind of Self-Care

    A New Kind of Self-Care

In this final episode of our "back to school" theme for September, I encourage you to take a fresh look at caring for yourself. I redefine self-care as intentional life-sustaining practices that protect well-being, enhance overall health, increase happiness, and promote empowerment, and, for women leaders in higher ed, also produce vitality by making space for curiosity and purpose. I offer suggestions for how to infuse your daily activities with this notion of caring for yourself. How to Have the Best First Day Ever!

I've been thinking about Priya Parker's book The Art of Gathering and what it can teach us about creating the BEST FIRST DAY EVER! -- both for our students on the first day of a new semester, and for new colleagues on their first day as members of our teams.

I combine Parker's wisdom with advice from my colleagues and a sprinkling of my own experiences, and distill it all into  four easy guidelines with more than 20 actionable steps you can take. As always, I link to extra resources for you in the shownotes.

This episode is meant to be a useful resource as we enter back to school season and think about welcoming a whole bunch of new people into our teaching and leadership lives.  Enjoy!

Unleashing the Creative Power of Diversity by Creating Psychological Safety

Unleashing the Creative Power of Diversity by Creating Psychological Safety

When PWIs use "race" as the primary signifier of diversity, we burden our colleagues with black and brown skin and reify structural and behavioral racism. We can do better.

Thinking about diversity along two dimensions -- identity diversity and cognitive diversity -- gives us a framework for unleashing all the creative power of everybody in the room, giving them the room and respect to bring their full selves -- all aspects of their identities -- to bear.

Research shows that teams high in cognitive diversity -- especially when identity diversity is present -- are better, faster, and more accurate as problem-solvers.

    The key? Psychological safety.

Planning for an Uncertain Future Through Storytelling

Planning for an Uncertain Future Through Storytelling

You have a strategic plan. You work with focus on your institutional goals and priorities. But when sudden, surprising, big paradigm-shifting stuff happens, you're not prepared.

    We've all been there.

We just spent the last two years there, muddling through the pandemic and the way it forced us to make quick decisions with insufficient time to plan.

There's another way, though: using stories to develop scenarios about potential futures, and then "rehearsing" those futures as a means of preparing -- deciding what impact these stories will have for our industry and your institution, and determining ahead of time how you might respond.

You can even use scenario planning in conjunction with your strategic plan. In fact, scenario planning can help you be even more effective with your mid- and long-term strategies because the stories you create will help you prepare for changes as they emerge, making it easier to pivot and still get where you want to go.

In this episode I'll walk you through seven steps you can take to get to good stories about the future by convening diverse teams, preparing them to be vulnerable, and keeping your stories alive. I've also included a free "tip sheet" for you -- a guide to what your planning could look like -- that you can download, share with your team, and use as a starting point.

    How to Travel Happier

    How to Travel Happier

We LOVE travel. We love airports and plane rides and road trips. We love the anticipation, the "getting there", AND the destination. Because we mostly travel for music, most of our time is spent more on the "getting there" than it does the destination. Here we provide a few suggestions, tips, and practices you can implement to help the "getting there" be just as enjoyable as the destination itself. Keep an open mind. The unexpected is a huge part of the fun of travel! Enjoy!
