    Amy Nicholson on 'Click'

    Amy Nicholson on 'Click'

Film critic Amy Nicholson (whose 'Unspooled' podcast with Paul Scheer is currently in its fourth season) first encountered 'Click' as a budding young critic and USC student. She didn't love it, but it did make her cry. This conversation with Jordan is an exploration of why that might be, alongside the ways things have improved and devolved in the years since the movie's 2006 release.

Then, one quick thing about an unsung badass Christmas movie, The Long Kiss Goodnight.

Exploring Human Bias and Effects of Training in OSM mapping: A Behavioral Experiment in Singapore (sotm2022)

Exploring Human Bias and Effects of Training in OSM mapping: A Behavioral Experiment in Singapore (sotm2022)
Human factor is one of the most crucial elements in crowdsourced mapping. This research explores how human bias affects the mapping process and whether such effects can be mitigated through targeted training with a behavioral experiment. The experiment uses a two-group randomized design. The treatment group receives more advanced training than the control group. There are two goals for the experiment. First, we aim to identify the common types of bias that amateurs from a specific demographic community have when using OSM. Second, we plan to explore whether training is helpful for reducing those biases and improve the quality of mapping. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is one of the VGI platforms that has been curated primarily by volunteers, which indicates that the demographic differences of the backgrounds of volunteers might affect their understanding of mapping and their mapping behavior. For example, contributors with varying skills and experiences of mapping and GIS software might choose different objects to map and trace them in different levels of detail. There is a wide range of factors that could have an impact on how and what individual contributors choose to map: age, gender, expertise, education, income, etc. This study focuses on digging into the mapping behavior of a specific demographic community - residents from Singapore. We have observed changes in terms of tagging and editing behavior in OSM before and after different levels of training. This study has important implications for OSM mapping, especially platforms such as HOTOSM which largely rely on faraway amateur curators to provide up-to-date geographical information of a specific area in case of events such as wars, natural disasters, crimes or humanitarian emergencies. about this event: https://2022.stateofthemap.org/sessions/RHF3UX/

Localization as an inclusion and participatory enabler research (sotm2022)
Language barrier and the default to English puts non-English speakers at a systemic disadvantage throughout open mapping communities and humanitarian open mapping activities resulting in significant missed participation and impact. We held experimentation on language translations of key resources identified by collaborators coming from local OSM communities and we hope to share the findings in this talk. We believe that language localization will enable inclusion and participation of underrepresented groups in mapping, dialogues and other humanitarian open mapping activities. We ran small experiments with local contributors to test how localisation of resources could work in the main languages of 3 priority countries (Vietnam, Madagascar, Mozambique) and we hoped its insights would inform a self-sustainable Localization Strategy for these communities and beyond. However, the documented findings are not sufficient due to challenges encountered (including communication and technical barriers, difficulty with monitoring and evaluation, among others) during the course of the research. Hence, opportunities and recommendations will be presented for future work to explore this theme. Linking OpenStreetMap and Wikidata: Case study of Taiwan's villages and rivers dataset (sotm2022)
Open data is a trend in Taiwan, and some community members of OpenStreetMap or Wikidata are importing or merging information they obtain from government sources into the corresponding OpenStreetMap and Wikidata Database. The village dataset is available by sharp file and detains metadata with reference numbers, and the river dataset covered big rivers in Taiwan. In this talk, I will talk about the process of importing data, maintaining data, and linking each data not only with the government source but also to OpenStreetMap and Wikidata. I will not only talk about dealing with the village and river datasets but also with other import project in Taiwan, like Taichung address dataset import, schools, kindergarten, etc. And I will also have a short introduction of Taiwan community activities, both OpenStreetMap and Wikidata. Recently OpenStreetMap Taiwan got funded by Wikimedia Foundation to improve Taiwan mapping data and also Wikimedia related projects like Wikidata, Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wiki Commons, etc. about this event: https://2022.stateofthemap.org/sessions/TJMAQT/

In this conversation, we got to ask Andy:

    1. What sorts of unattended devices do our clients use NetSupport Manager to manage?

    2. What sort of help can NetSupport Manager provide to managers who need to maintain unattended devices?

    3. What feedback have our customers shared about how useful NetSupport Manager is when maintaining unattended devices?

18WT #014: Hobbies - His RC Car Is Insane!

18WT 014:  Our hosts are joined by Patrick’s brother-in-law Larry Heller. He starts out a little bit nervous and Patrick goes where no Host should go, of course. This leaves Janet shaking her head. She begins by asking how Larry got into RC cars.

He began in his hometown of Schenectady NY with a friend of his. He began with Nitro cars; this was in 2011; he explained that a Nitro car runs off Nitrous. He then went to gas then electric. He went from a Mad Max RC car to a Tesla RC car is how Patrick explains it.

Janet asks about the batteries and Larry explains that per battery the cost can be $489 for a pro that competes. Larry shows his battery and car hook up; it is the Arrma 6s Felony. This is a 1/7th scale RC car. It goes 80miles an hour out of the box. He has clocked it at 73mph. He shows them the car without the body on it and makes Janet dizzy as he turns his camera back and forth.

The batteries are a twin battery pack. Larry refers to them as “LiPo’s”, they are 5000 milli-amp, G2, 11.1 volt, 50C 3S. Larry explains that is just to run it, the speed comes from the motor, a Spektrum Firma 2050K-v motor, he has knobby tires that came with it, they can be upgraded; the front tires are different from the rear tires. This set up is on road but could be used off road, probably causing damage to the car. He talks about running without the body a

Pod29 - Alastair McKie, Fugro, on transition towards remote offshore operations

Pod29 - Alastair McKie, Fugro, on transition towards remote offshore operations

Podcast episode 29, 1st October 2020. This week SUT CEO Steve Hall interviews Alastair McKie, Director of Remote Operations for Europe and Africa at Fugro. Alastair explains that advances in digital communication & control technology now enables operators of offshore systems, & their associated seafloor infrastructure, to bring staff onshore, and that ultimately almost all staff who currently need to work onboard offshore platforms may be able to work from a remote operations centre on land. By having a global network of remote operations centres, you can hand over operations from a Scottish centre to a US or Australian centre providing 24/7 coverage and backup in case a centre goes offline. Onshore operations are also expected to help diversify the workforce in the sector, providing a working environment that is more conducive to work/life balance and family commitments.
The technology today is mainly applied in an offshore energy context, to include hydrocarbons and renewables, but is suited to future industries such as offshore hydrogen, carbon capture & storage operations, and perhaps defence operations. Challenges include the continued requirement to repair and maintain systems, and new risks need to be mitigated such as cyber-attack on digital systems.
Find out more about Fugro at https://www.fugro.com/
Contact Steve Hall if you would like to be featured in a future episode - also we want to make a Christmas Special based on questions asked by our listeners, going back to previous guests or to new voices who can answer your questions about all aspects of underwater technology.
