    Episode 6, OUR FIRST INTERVIEW!

On this episode, Eric and Erika are back as we take a shot at our first interview ever. We bring on Denise Giuvelis who just completed running everyday in the year 2021. Denise highlights her year of running while also sharing stories of treading water during a trail race, driving through a snow storm to make it to a marathon on time, and her 4 legged running partner, Cubby.

Erika also has a big announcement early in the show about an upcoming ultra, and they highlight the past week's Walt Disney Marathon week after a woman runner made history and we think our friend Katie had a lot to do with it!

Run to the Hills - Episode 60 - Brodie Sharpe - The Run Smarter Podcast

It was great to have Brodie on the show. Such a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guy with a passion for keeping people doing what they love.

Brodie is a runner and he I knows that you want to run injury-free. In order to do that, you need the right education and guidance to repair and reduce injuries, old and new. But the internet is flooded with bad advice that may aggravate your injury and decrease your ability to run at all. Dealing with bad information is overwhelming. Hopefully our chat with Brodie will help you separate the bad from the good information!

Run to the Hills - Episode 58 - Eddie and Gary - UTMJ Podium Finish and the 2021 London Marathon

We thought for a change Eddie and Gary would share their recent race experience. Build up, race and recovery. Both Eddie and Gary had a great day, but two very different approaches to racing. Two very different events too. Gary was racing the clock at the 2021 Virgin London Marathon and Eddie raced to a podium finish at the 2021 Ultra Trail Des Montagnes Jura.

Apologies - Gary did not do three Covid tests, but he did have to show a negative result three times.

Run to the Hills - Episode 57 - Ryk Downes Punk Panther

Ryk Downes, who in his teenage years was a top Orienteer before a running hiatus of over 20 years. This break from running ended when he ran the 2003 London Marathon as the Punk Panther. Since then Ryk has completed many Marathons, Ultra Marathons and other long distance challenges.

In January 2016 Ryk collapsed and ‘died’ from a hereditary heart condition. He was thankfully revived at the scene by passers-by by using a defibrillator and performing CPR.

A subsequent triple heart bypass in February 2016 saw him return to running in the Leeds Half Marathon three months later. Ryk then returned to ultra-distance running with the Hardmoors 60 in September 2016.

Whilst recovering from his heart attack Ryk was looking for Ultra Marathons near to home. Finding few and wanting to give something back to the sport he has launched the Punk Panther Series from Otley. He is currently writing a book about his running experiences and the road to recovery and how for many people he has become an inspiration.

Episode 56 - Rob Bourne - LGBT Ultra Runner & Adventurer

Episode 56 - Rob Bourne - LGBT Ultra Runner & Adventurer

Rob is a self-professed LGBT ultra runner and adventurer. Rob attempted the first unsupported run along the Cape Wrath Trail. He didn’t quite tick the unsupported box, but was super happy to have still completed it in 5 and a half days with 12kgs on my back. This also briefly set a new supported FKT on the trail.

Rob used the attempt to try and drive as much awareness for LGBT inclusion as possible. I’d love to continue this, and I was wondering if your audience would be interested in hearing the story of the trip, my experiences as a gay ultra runner and my motivations for speaking out?

S2 EP12: Esther Goldsmith, running and the menstrual cycle

S2 EP12: Esther Goldsmith, running and the menstrual cycle

Esther Goldsmith is a Sports Physiologist and part of the science team at FitrWoman - a menstrual cycle tracking app for athletes. However, Esther started out as a dancer, completing an Undergraduate Degree in Contemporary Dance. It wasn’t until she began to fall out of love with dancing that she found running, and eventually, after a few years out, went on to complete a Masters in Applied Sports and Exercise Physiology.

She wrote her dissertation on running economy and the menstrual cycle, which has since been published, and now works for Orreco who own FitrWoman where she gets to work with elite female athletes on a daily basis.

In the final episode of the series, Esther talks in detail about what the menstrual cycle is and how it can impact our running economy. She also answers your questions about running and your cycle.

S2 EP11: Ruby Raut, waking up and kicking ass

S2 EP11: Ruby Raut, waking up and kicking ass

Ruby Raut is the founder and CEO of WUKA, a period pants brand that does good. Ruby grew up in Nepal and was given old sari rags to use as in place of period products, a sustainable but unhygienic alternative to tampons and pads. It was this concept, using reusable materials in place of disposables, that gave Ruby the inspiration to found WUKA.

In 2019, Ruby took part in the Vitality 10K with Bryony Gordon's Mental Health Mates and Celebrate You body confidence campaign. The only requirement was that she (along with the rest of the group) had to run the race in WUKA underwear and relatively nothing else!

In this episode, Ruby explains how WUKA's Perform range provides a sustainable and leakproof choice for women who run, as well as discussing what it was like to run a 10K in just her underwear! Plus, Emily and Ruby open up the conversation about periods to break taboos and raise awareness of the period pants tax. Sign the petition here.
