The Mission Beyond Darkness-Battle of the Philippine Sea with Jon Parshall

The Mission Beyond Darkness-Battle of the Philippine Sea with Jon Parshall
This week Seth, Bill and Jon Parshall tackle the second day of the Battle of the Philippine Sea, also known as the Mission Beyond Darkness. On Jun e20, 1944 Admiral Marc Mitscher made the bold decision to launch his aviators in a risky, long-distanced duck strike. In an attempt to get the killing blows on Ozawa's carrier force Mitscher sent an enormous strike of 240 aircraft. The strike, the first on Japanese carriers since 1942, produced mixed results and ended in one of the more famous, if not controversial, decisions of the entire Pacific war.

Pearla discusses her love of aviation from a young age and how she's getting the next generation excited about unmanned aviation on Guam and beyond.  If you've never been to the Marianas, this episode is a great way to get a glimpse into the Pacific islands.

And if you do have connections there, find out how the latest technology may be used on your island home.

The Invasion of Saipan Part 3 of 3 with Jon Parshall

The Invasion of Saipan Part 3 of 3 with Jon Parshall
This week Seth and Bill welcome back good buddy Jon Parshall to complete the three-part discussion on the pivotal invasion of Saipan. The team goes into deep detail on the final Japanese martial act on Saipan, the infamous Gyokusai of July 7, 1944. During the Gyokusai, two regiments of the 27th Infantry Division's 105th Infantry Regiment are overrun in the largest banzai charge of the entire Pacific war. The final, last gasp, of the Japanese military on Saipan doesn't end the dying, however. After the Japanese are defeated, thousands of Japanese civilians on Saipan, quite literally, throw their lives away over the cliffs at Marpi Point. The team struggles to get through the absolutely heart-wrenching stories of the needless deaths of the innocent. Tune in and hear the gritty conclusion of the invasion of Saipan during Operation FORAGER. #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #usnavy #usa #usarmy #medalofhonor #enterprise #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #cv6 #midway #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #ussenterprise

The Invasion of Saipan Part 2 of 3 with Jon Parshall

The Invasion of Saipan Part 2 of 3 with Jon Parshall
This week Seth and Bill are again joined by good pal Jon Parshall to discuss the evolving invasion of Saipan. After the Marines pushed off of the beachhead, the advance inland progressed nicely until the 27th Infantry Division ran into incredibly difficult terrain and vicious Japanese defense at Naftan Point and Death Valley. In the resulting mess of Death Valley, Marine General Holland Smith relieved Army General ralph Smith, igniting a firestorm of controversy in what became known as Smith versus Smith. The team discusses the vicious fighting in the central portion of the island and the controversy surrounding Holland Smith's decision. Tune in and see what all the mess is about as the team takes its normal deep dive into what has been, thus far, the Pacific War's bloodiest campaign. #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship #ussenterprise

The Invasion of Saipan Part 1 of 3 with Jon Parshall

The Invasion of Saipan Part 1 of 3 with Jon Parshall
This week Seth and Bill welcome great pal Jon Parshall back to the show for a 3 episode run on the invasion of Saipan as part of Operation FORAGER. In this episode, the team discusses the pre-invasion bombardment, the first large deployment of the UDTs (forerunners of today's Navy SEALS), Draper Kaufmann, the landings by the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions, and the utter chaos of the beachhead. The guys go into the Japanese counterattack on the Marine beachhead. The guys go through the largest Japanese armored assault against US forces in the Pacific theater and dive into some of the stories of that vicious night. As the Marines begin to clear the beachhead, they begin to run into Japanese civilians for the first time in the war. Tune in to hear one of the more terrible and yet touching stories we have revealed yet. #wwii #wwiihistory #ww2 #worldwar2 #usnavy #usnavyseals #usmc #usmarines #saipan #usa #usarmy #aircraft #aircraftcarrier #battleship

    Remittances, A Homeland Connection

    Remittances, A Homeland Connection

For the Season 2 Finale of Exit Spring Mountain, we’re talking about the care packages we send and receive to offer help and hope to our families and friends abroad. Balikbayan boxes are also a topic of conversation, as they have helped float the Phillippine country for decades. Many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders also send remittances - funds transferred from migrants or recent immigrants to their home countries. What does the money pay for? Why do AAPI communities continue this practice? And how can this be a lifeline for families and governments in other countries?

Professor Constancio Arnaldo, an assistant professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Gender and Ethnic studies and Asian and Asian American Studies at UNLV discusses the historical context of why remittances and balikbayan boxes are important for Filipino and Filipino American communities. Bernardo Blanco, who has been participating in sending remittances to family in the Phillippines for decades, explains why he feels it is his duty to continue to help his family abroad for as long as he lives. JD Reyes, a first-generation UNLV student and Chamorro from Saipan, explains why he loves staying connected with his family back home  through the care packages he receives and sends.

Exit Spring Mountain is a podcast from Nevada Public Radio. Our team includes senior producer Nessa Concepcion, academic research consultant Mark Padoongpatt and assistant producer, researcher and social media manager, Isabelle Chen Rice. Joe Schoenemann oversees podcasts as news director at Nevada Public Radio, and our sound editing, mixing, and mastering is by Christopher Alverez.

Su·per Ty·phoon – What a storm can destroy, two nurses can rebuild (Part Two)

On International Nurses Day, we’re wrapping up a two-part story for our ‘Rehabilitationships’ podcast.

This is the story of Annie Cangco and Kathie Fetting, two nurses who met in 2019, following a devastating super typhoon in Saipan.

Annie was staying in a shelter with her family, including her eldest son Bradley, who was living with a spinal cord injury following a car crash.

Kathie, a nurse at Mary Free Bed, was volunteering with the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Kathie and Annie met and quickly formed a friendship, as they worked together to help her son.

This episode picks up the story when Kathie returns to the U.S., and starts working to find a way to bring her new friends to Mary Free Bed.

On this International Nursing Day, listen the episode below to learn what truly makes a good nurse, and why nursing is more than the career, it’s a calling.

Su·per Ty·phoon – What a storm can destroy, two nurses can rebuild (Part One)

For National Nurses Week, our newest episode of Rehabilitationships takes a trip across the Pacific.

    su·per ty·phoon - /ˈso͞opər tīˈfo͞on/

Definition: a destructive force inspiring the community to respond…

Annie Cangco lived in Saipan, a small island in the western Pacific Ocean and a commonwealth of the United States.

Annie was a caregiver for her family, including her eldest son who was living with a spinal cord injury.

Her family’s world was devasted in 2018, when a super typhoon hit the island, leaving half of it destroyed.

Kathie Fetting is a registered nurse who works at Mary Free Bed. At the time of the typhoon, she was also volunteering with the American Red Cross in disaster relief.

After seeing the news of the destruction in Saipan, Kathie backed up her bag and shipped out to help.

In the first episode of a two-part story, Annie and Kathie share their story of how a super typhoon brought them together.

You’ll hear from Annie about life on the island, her son’s accident and when the storm first hit. Kathie shares her story as well – including her journey into nursing and the Red Cross, and her first experiences of the typhoon damage.

We’ll share the conclusion of their story Thursday, May 12, on International Nurses Day.

Feeling inspired to change a life too? Mary Free Bed is looking for nursing staff who’ll bring hope, love and inspiration to patients – and each other. Find out how you can join our nursing team here: https://www.maryfreebed.com/nursing-careers/

Episode 15: Puebloans taking action abroad

Episode 15: Puebloans taking action abroad

*Some of the content in this episode might be sensitive to some listeners*

In this episode Dave Moore chats with two sisters who are Pueblo natives and are now thousands of miles away on the island of Saipan. It’s safe to say Aria and Grace Keilbach are Pueblo’s Podcast’s most long-distance guests.

Saipan is a very small island — smaller than Pueblo (in square miles) in fact! It’s located in the Pacific Ocean near Guam — think north of Australia and south of Japan! It’s just a tiny dot on the map.

After World War II, countless combat dogs that had been used to sniff out bombs and hiding Japanese, were lost or left behind. Today the descendants of those heroic war dogs are known as boonie dogs, a mix between Bloodhounds, Rottweilers, Labradors, and German Shepards. They roam the island living off any scraps they can find and enduring the harsh rainstorms and blistering heat.

While Aria & Grace have been there, they’ve seen horrible animal abuse and treatment of animals, including starved mama dogs, neglected puppies, and more. Many of the pups have health issues from the neglect, like broken jaws, vision problems and fleas and ticks! Now they've dedicated their time -- in between their school work -- to an organization they founded and named Boonie Babies.

Aria & Grace are now working to rehome dogs, give them the vet care they need and make a difference in the island. Unfortunately they don’t have a certified vet on the island so many animals die without care. However, a small clinic on the island does what they can, but cannot perform surgeries. The clinic recently faced a hurdle of it’s own. The land was re-zoned by the government, forcing the clinic out. Aria and Grace say they will stay on the island until their work has made a difference.
