Wir geben dir keinen Grund zum Einschlafen: Peace And Ready For The Ride...

Remember Juicy Fruit Commercials? (with Carrie Brownstein & Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney)

Remember Juicy Fruit Commercials? (with Carrie Brownstein & Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney)

We could not be more excited to be joined this week by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney! We talk about Portland, including our memorable brunch with Carrie, fantastic dinner with Corin, indie rock tour with Corin's husband Lance Bangs and the current state of the food scene in the country's hippest city. Vanessa also bonds with Carrie over their shared love of "basic" fashions, we discuss record collecting on tour and why ordering clothes online is often disappointing. Finally we dig deep into the iconic '80s Juicy Fruit gum commercials which combined a catchy song, extreme sports and Olympic level athleticism into a deep desire to have some artificially flavored pineapple (or mango?) gum. Finally, we convince Carrie and Corin to play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate changing the name of cheesecake to cheese pie, making Harrison Ford the face of Hanukkah and if the legendary American Football house should have its emo legacy updated to include the time that Sleater-Kinney potentially played a half-pipe there a long time ago.

Don't forget to check out Sleater-Kinney's brand new album "Little Rope," which comes out on January19th! You can pre-order the album HERE and check them out on tour this spring if you know what's good for you!

Steven Severin and James Miles of Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival

Steven Severin and James Miles of Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival

After a brief three-year absence, Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival is making its grand return for its 50th Anniversary. Taking place Sept 2 and 3 in Seattle, this unique Arts-forward music festival celebrates inclusivity and community, and we've got festival organizers Steven Severin and James Miles to talk to us about the focus and determination it takes to present an event on such a grand scale. An esteemed local venue owner, Steven is the Co-President of festival producer New Rising Sun and James, aka Fresh Professor -- a career educator with a novel approach -- is the Executive Director of Third Stone, the non-profit arts and education arm of Bumbershoot. This dynamic duo have set forth to bring a decidedly local flavor to a festival that also features major musical acts this year such as Sleater-Kinney, Sunny Day Real Estate, Brittany Howard, The Revivalists, Durand Jones and Fatboy Slim, among others. "Celebrating what it means to be an artist," Steve and James talk about how important it is to not only entertain the audience, but to support the community and make music and the arts not only accessible to all, but how to embed the concept of inclusivity into a long-standing community-based festival. It's a wonderful new era for Bumbershoot and we are here for it. So join us for this special episode and learn more about this impressive and exciting festival as we venture into the Great Northwest for the 50th Anniversary edition of the Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival. It's gonna be a great ride!!

But Alan wants to serve it to their daughter more frequently! PLUS: Swift Justice featuring the legendary Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney!

    Sleater-Kinney's off-kilter songs

    Sleater-Kinney's off-kilter songs

Sleater-Kinney have always been shapeshifters. Within that guitar forward, angular, and soaring indie rock sound they have always experimented and tried something new. When I listen to Sleater-Kinney’s songs, I feel on edge, and I like that feeling.

As with their other nine records, their newest album shifts again, and so does the band. SK have returned to their foundations of Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein, and it’s the two of them who joined me to Take 5. I gave them the theme off kilter songs; music that was out of step, in the best of ways, with the culture it came into.

I’ll be honest,  I wasn’t expecting these song choices. But hearing Carrie and Corin detail why they chose them, speaks to their passions as fans, and their own choices as musicians. From Talk Talk to Frank Ocean to Chrome, this is a mind expanding conversation about the ever revealing qualities of great music.

    Talk Talk – 'Eden' (Carrie)

    Frank Ocean – 'Ivy' (Corin)

Joan Armatrading – 'Drop the Pilot' (Carrie)

    Chrome – 'Static Gravity' (Carrie)

Prince – 'How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore' (Corin)

    ...about The Hot Rock (1972)

    ...about The Hot Rock (1972)

A comic caper with real star power in front of and behind the camera.

Directed by Peter Yates. Screenplay by William Goldman based on a novel by Donald Westlake. Starring Robert Redford, George Segal, Ron Liebman, Paul Sand, Moses Gunn, Topo Swope and Zero Mostel. Score by Quincy Jones.

How is the world wrong about this movie?

From Bryan: Despite the true talent that made this movie, despite it being a breezy but smart good time, this movie failed to bring in audiences. It also is sadly never mentioned when folks gush about seventies movies 24-7. Well, heck, I guess we’ll gush about it.

Gerard Way's songs that made him

Gerard Way's songs that made him

For so many of us, My Chemical Romance soundtracked our angsty youth.

Their theatrical music was mirrored by the wild shows, and Gerard Way was at the centre of it all. He wasn’t just a musician - he was an illustrator, a comic book author, and most of all a fan.

In 2015 he was in Australia performing at the Soundwave festival off the back of his debut solo album Hesitant Alien and supporting the Smashing Pumpkins so I grabbed the chance to Take 5.

Supergrass - ‘Caught By The Fuzz’

    David Bowie - ‘Five Years’

Iggy & the Stooges  - ‘Search and Destroy’

Sleater-Kinney - ‘I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone’

    Pulp - ‘This Is Hardcore’
