17: The Cost of Clutter
Oh, clutter! In today's episode we ponder what having clutter around your space and for your mind is costing us. Time. Emotion. Energy. Potential. Productivity. Money. Brigette read page 90 of a book by Patrice Washington, Redefine Wealth for Yourself (linked below!), then C&B talk about this excerpt and pull out topics to discuss further.
This episode will be helpful to give you ideas of small things you can tackle to declutter before working to some of the more difficult things to declutter, like sentimental stuff. We would love to see how this episode inspires you to make your environment (physical and mental) more organized! What are you tackling first?

Teach Me How To Organize And Declutter My Space, with Megan Golightly
Spring has sprung and we are in full swing cleaning mode, but this year we decided to take it one step further and get *Monica clean* by learning how to properly declutter and organize our homes (and our lives), and the psychology behind our belongings.
It’s time to say goodbye to those cluttered closets because while you may not realize it – living amongst disorder can have a really negative impact on your life. Think about all of the unnecessary time and energy you waste trying to find your keys or that important document you needed. Or the pile of aspirational items that make you feel bad about yourself.
So this week we are joined by Megan Golightly, a professional home organizer and founder of Calgary-based business, Simplified, which helps people organize, pack and unpack their homes. Megan blends her degree in psychology and passion for neuroscience research with practical organization strategies. Her goal is to help everyone feel at ease in their homes and remove any negative feelings and thoughts they have about their clutter, themselves, and their spaces.
Join us as we chat about:
- The neuroscience behind decluttering and organization
- Why clutter happens in the first place
- The difference between organizing, decluttering, tidying and cleaning
- How to learn to let go of sentimental items
- Why holding onto things out of financial or environmental guilt can cost you
- Top 3 things someone should do when tackling a room in their home
- Megan’s secret-sauce product recommendations for organizing
- How to deal with a partner/roommate who isn’t as organized as you are
We hope this episode helps you feel empowered to organize your life and declutter the things that no longer serve you. You got this!

Teacher, if your class ROOM is a distraction, it may be time to give it a quick tidy! Bits of paper on desks and pencils on the floor may not seem like a huge problem, but can you really focus on what's most important if your surroundings are a mess? It takes away our pride in where we are, and it affects our students too!
If you're thinking, But Toni, I just don't have time to keep everything picture perfect every single day! I'd say, you're absolutely right. You don't, and you shouldn't.
Here's how to make it happen without taking all that responsibility on yourself. I'll give you a hint: get your class involved, but make it fun.
If you're ready to whistle while we work, let's get those classrooms tidy!
