A Friday Night Party Reunion 20 Years in the Making

A Friday Night Party Reunion 20 Years in the Making

The Friday Night Party was a long time staple of WJPZ, allowing mixers to come in and strut their stuff.  Today we revisit the 1999-2001 version of the show with three guests who've gone on to very successful careers in the music world.  From the Class of 2001, we have Mike Kruz, aka DJ Komar, as well as Adrian Arenas, DJ Double A.  They're joined by Michael Eisner, aka DJ Splyce, from the Class of 2003.

Hailing from Binghamton, New York City, and Los Angeles, respectively, each of our three guests talks about ending up at Syracuse.  For Komar and Double-A, they learned from the guys before them - DJ Pass da Mic, and Spike Eskin.  And when they took over the show, they paid it forward with Splyce, who quickly impressed them both with his talent and enthusiasm.

We've talked about the Ostrom House on previous epsiodes, but these three may be the only alumni that enjoyed that iteration of the station; the show was designed to sound like a party - and now it was in an off campus house, the perfect venue.   We believe all things discussed here are past their statutes of limitations.

The "Triple Threat" quickly garnered a following, and routinely DJ'ed events in Syracuse at the Country Club, from end of semester bashes to Donovan McNabb's draft party.   But without the proper equipment to do a live broadcast, these three describe how they pre-recorded a show "live to tape" - a cassette tape.  You'll hear that audio.

DJ Splyce is now known as "Hollywood's Disc Jockey to the Stars."   He worked hard at honing his craft and networking in Los Angeles.   A guest spot DJ'ing Larry King's party celebrating 20 years on CNN landed him an interview on the show.  From there, his career went into the stratosphere, doing gigs all over the world.

Komar, now on air as Mike Kruz, has had a two decade career in radio, including 13 years in South Florida. He's currently doing afternoons on Miami's Easy 93.1.   He's DJ'ed everything from Miami Fashion week to a residency at Atlantis in the Bahamas.

Adrian had a long career in entertainment, working with Tommy Mottola at Sony Music, then distributing telenovelas internationally, then for Univision, targeting their content for the US Latino audience.   But the perspective gained from the pandemic led him to pursue another passion - getting certified in life coaching.

Throughout this episode, you'll hear common themes from the WJPZ at 50 podcast.   Mentoring, being kind to others, paying it forward.  This was just as true for mixshow DJ's as it was for news, sports, music, and PR.     And the lessons learned at WJPZ served each of our guests well.  And we of course close with a classic WJPZ story - when 2/3 of "the triple threat" were kicked out of the Country Club - at their own gig.

82: My Triple Threat Communication System

Communication is the key to a successful, smooth and operational business. That's why I am sharing with you my Triple Threat Communication System which I also call "communication 3 ways" with my coaching clients.

I keep up with my systems and processes by using studio software DANCEBIZ. Sign up to Dancebiz and use my special promo code below to claim 2 months off your subscription!

I know that it can be frustrating when parents and clients don't read the newsletter, the email or listen to any correspondence you send. Let's combat that!

I have a 3 part (simple) system that's really helped me overcome that communication barrier. Of course, there's always going to be people that need that extra helping hand, but at the end of the day, I would say a majority of what we do in my studio business is very well communicated and minimises customer enquiries. I want this for you to! Enjoy xx

Jesse V. Johnson Talks Hell Hath No Fury (2021)

Famed Director, Stuntman, Stunt Coordinator, and writer, Jesse V. Johnson returns to the show to discuss his new, highly acclaimed film, Hell Hath No Fury (2021). This Well Go USA Entertainment release hits theaters next week.

Directed by Jesse V. Johnson and starring Nina Bergman, Daniel Bernhardt, Louis Mandylor, Timothy V. Murphy, Dominiquie Vandenberg and Josef Canon; HELL HATH NO FURY is at its essence a story about one woman who single-handedly takes on the might of the German war machine, a ragtag unit of US infantrymen, and the likes of the French resistance as each faction searches for a cache of gold stolen by the Nazis.

Taekwondo Life Magazine has consistently covered Johnson's films, including his Scott Adkins' collaborations in The Debt Collector Films, Avengement, Accident Man, and Savage Dog. Johnson is also responsible for The Beautiful Ones, The Mercenary, and Triple Threat. All these films have the common link of elevating the level of drama, cinematography, acting's and direction on action films.

Hell Hath No Fury is a triumph of film making. Be sure to check out our review on our website.

    Episode 177 - Destiny Claymore

    Episode 177 - Destiny Claymore

We first heard of Destiny Claymore in an article on Vanyaland and then in another piece by the great Jed Gottlieb in The Boston Herald.  A Boston triple threat with an incredible, unique voice and dancing chops, Destiny had a pretty great 2020 - despite COVID.

She appears in the upcoming film Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds and not too long ago was also in The Expecting with AnnaSophia Robb.  In addition, she was able to release her album Pretty to rave reviews.  Not bad for a COVID-filled 2020.

Her unique upbringing – being the first female born into her family in the past 25 years – reflects her name, which seems to indicate more great things ahead.

2021 looks to be a good year.

    The Films of Iko Uwais

    The Films of Iko Uwais

The Films of Iko Uwais are among the best martial arts action films ever made. Although Uwais had small roles in the films Rogue One and Man of Tai Chi, the world was, largely, unaware of the catalogue of action films he had starred in. It was not until his lead role in the English speaking, martial arts action series, Wu Assassins, premiered on Netflix that U.S. audiences became more aware of him. Iko was discovered by filmmaker, Gareth Evan, while Evans was in Indonesia making a documentary on Pencak Silat, the indigenous martial art. Together they formed a partnership, leading to a series of action films, including, 2009's Merantu, The Raid, and the Raid 2. Iko went on to star on one of the best martial arts action films of all time, The Night Comes For Us. Iko's charm and personality has helped him to penetrate the U.S. film market, starring with Mark Wahlberg and Dave Bautista in recent films. In this episode, Taekwondo Life's Editor, Marc Zirogiannis, explores why Iko Uwais might be the most important martial artist to hit the big screen since Bruce Lee.
