#428. The Secret to Unlocking the Power of Your Wearable (Apple, Garmin, Oura, Fitbit, Whoop & More) with Peter Tierney

Wearable technology (e.g., Apple Watch, Oura Ring, Fitbit, etc.) gives us incredible data, but without context, it’s meaningless.

In this episode, health & performance coach Peter Tierney reveals how to integrate subjective measures like mood, stress and motivation with wearable tech data to truly understand what’s going on in your body.

Peter draws from his experience working with elite athletes and as a senior researcher in the performance apparel industry. He shares smart insights on key metrics to focus on, why mismatches between feelings and data are valuable, managing load based on your phase of training, tools for assessing readiness to train, and more.

One Simple Change Can Dramatically Improve your Sleep!

One Simple Change Can Dramatically Improve your Sleep!

Today I share with you the easiest sleep hack you can start using today!

It's all about closing your mouth!

See like me I'm sure some of you wake up with a dry throat after a night's sleep. And if that's the case then you most likely are a mouth breather while you sleep.

Why is this a big deal?

Because when you breathe through your nose you filter air and retain more oxygen vs when you sleep with your mouth open you are brining in more bacteria, getting less oxygen and causing disruption in your sleep from snoring or sleep apnea which is induced by mouth breathing.

In today's episode I break down some of the biggest improvements I've had with my sleep over the past two weeks!

If you want to learn more you can check out James Nestor on YouTube to hear more of his podcast where he goes deep into the science of nasal breathing vs mouth breathing.

If you are convinced and want to start taping your mouth shut you can click the link below and get your Hostage Tape now!

Wearable Health Tech: Apple Watch, Fitbit & More (feat. Ted Kritsonis)

Wearable Health Tech: Apple Watch, Fitbit & More (feat. Ted Kritsonis)

The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let’s dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.

Today we are joined by Ted Kritsonis, who studies a variety of tech products. Ted is talking to us today about wearable health tech. In this episode, we cover the best wearable tech Ted has seen and discuss the pros and cons of some of the most popular smartwatches on the market. He dives into the accuracy of wearables and the best way for consumers to use the products. Ted also gives some great tips on choosing the best device for the purpose consumers seek to understand. Tune in today to learn how to utilize wearable tech for your lifestyle.

    IN THIS EPISODE:

    ●   [4:51] How did Ted get into the tech field from journalism?

    ●   [7:28] Ted’s favorite wearable tech products.

    ●   [9:40] What's the best product for sleep tracking?

    ●   [12:10] Ted discusses the pros and cons of the major smartwatches on the market.

    ●   [16:10] What to consider when buying a smartwatch for yourself or others.

    ●   [18:16] What should we know about WHOOP and Oura Smart Ring?

    ●   [25:02] Ted discusses the accuracy of wearable devices.

    ●   [32:03] How does what you eat tie into wearables?

    ●   [34:10] How do the devices get our heart rate from the top of our wrists?

    ●   [36:52] How should we understand the context that devices share?

    ●   [40:50] Why should you take the data to the doctor to determine the next steps if something seems “wrong” on the wearable?

    ●   [43:19] What does Ted think is next in this space?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    ●   Different watches have different benefits, so when shopping for a smartwatch, determine what you want it to do and then shop for the best watch with those capabilities. For example, for runners, Garmin is the best.

    ●   Accuracy is getting better, but the information isn’t 100%. Use the information as insight instead of final information. Use it to compare how you’ve done across a span of time vs. reading too much into the information. If something seems off, take the data to a doctor to help you understand.

    ●   Your lifestyle habits, including sleep, nutrition, and physical activity, all tie into your health. The watch cannot give you all the answers, especially regarding the food you consume.

    QUOTES:

“I always advise people to skip a year and go two or three years before you upgrade because then it’ll feel like there's a bigger jump. There are times when a feature comes out that people can get excited about. Where I feel like there's confusion, is the expectation that one company, because it has a reputation for making good products, is really good at making this type of product, and I have to call out the apple watch for that. A lot of people look at the apple watch and think that's the best and end all of smartwatches when it is not. If you're a runner, I would recommend a Garmin over an apple watch any day.”  Ted Kritsonis

“Treat the numbers that you see as an insightful perspective. Thank it from, like ok, maybe I'm in the ballpark, and if that ballpark is dangerous, that could be a cause for concern. There's ECGs now on certain smartwatches; if there's something that seems off about the way your heart is working, the watch isn't going to tell you why, but go to your doctor and say, hey doc, I'm seeing this number on my device pretty consistently, what do you make of it?.” Ted Kritsonis

“I do suspect we will see more, especially on mental health. Mental health tracking, brain scanning, things on the cognitive side of health as opposed to just the physical activity.” Ted Kritsonis

    Dr. Andy Galpin
On this Episode we are joined by Dr. Andy Galpin. Dr. Galpin an author, a scientist, a teacher and a coach, who has a Phd in Human Bioenergetics and runs the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Lab at California State University. Beyond the huge depth of clinical research that Dr. Galpin is involved in, he's also worked with the likes of Mike Lee, Conor McGregor and Stefi Cohen. I asked Dr. Galpin to come on and discuss wearable fitness tech- it's a subject that has been greatly requested, and to my mind there's no better expert than Andy, having published his book 'Unplugged', alongside Brian McKenzie a few years back- by far one of my favourite reads on the matter. There's plenty here to think about- from HRV monitors, to heart rate training and sleep apps, and what we really set out to do was give you some pause for thought on how you can use these devices, without letting them use you. Enjoy!

Allison Mrugal - Following your inner compass

Allison Mrugal is a professional road cyclist who races with Cardinal - Classic Cycling team. She got her start in professional cycling, racing mountain bikes cross country. However, after some time, she decided to focus on road racing. She's competed in many events, including the Joe Martin stage race and Unbound gravel. In this episode, we catch up with Allison to learn more about her cycling career and what it's like behind the scenes of being a professional athlete. Then, in an exciting podcast segment, Ally talks about what it is like to race your way into shape and use Pilates to develop balance on the bike.

We also touch on the impact of the global covid epidemic and discuss how some cyclists adapted and others didn't.

Obviously, we also discuss what the future will bring for Ally and any potential goals she is setting.

Hang in the podcast because we talk about nutrition towards the end and compare making margaritas with mixing 90 grams of carbs into a bottle.

Whoop and sleep tracking devices also make an appearance in the show.

Finally, we discuss the long-overdue attention women's cycling is getting more recently and some predictions for the women's tour de France this year.

It was great catching up with Allison Mrugal and we hope you enjoy the show!

P.s. Let us know in the comments if you agree that Ally should do cyclo-cross this year :-)
