To the Ramparts of Infinity with Jack Elliott, Jr.

About Us: Business owners, Chamber directors, industry leaders, Main Street Directors, school and hospital leaders discuss what's happening in North MS with station owner, Melinda Marsalis. Interviews are recorded in Ripley, MS at Sun Bear Studio, broadcast every Tuesday at 11 am on The Shark 102.3 FM Radio and added here to help you stay informed.   If you would like to be considered for an interview, you can call or email Melinda.  The Shark 102.3 FM Radio Station and Sun Bear Studio, located in Ripley, MS, are owned by Chris and Melinda Marsalis.  Chris and Melinda have a passion for community development and love all of the amazing things that are going on in North Mississippi.

This Week:   In this episode, Melinda talks with long-time friend and author, Jack Elliott, Jr. In this phone interview, Jack discusses what sparked his interest in the life of Colonel William Clark Falkner, the great grandfather of Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner, and how Elliott's desire to know more led him to research and write his book, To the Ramparts of Infinity.

World renown author, William Faulkner, used his great-grandfather as a model for the character Colonel John Sartoris. In fact, many of William Faulkner's characters were comprised of elements pulled from people who once walked the streets of Ripley and Tippah County. Because of all those connections, Elliott felt the story of Colonel William Clark Falkner should be told.

In his book, To the Ramparts of Infinity, Elliott has created a "field guide" to the history of Ripley. The book really brings that time period alive for the reader.

To purchase the book, go to the websites of Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or University Press in Oxford to order your own copy. If you are in Ripley, there are also copies available at the Ripley Public Library.

William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily"

William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily"

William Faulkner chooses an interesting title for his story about a woman confined to her past. The story is filled with many symbolic references, but none as interesting as its title. “A Rose for Emily” allows us to explore what the upcoming events may entail. The title symbolizes Emily’s superiority to the town, her choice of seclusion, and the ultimate fall of her sanity and life.

Though a rose may have its bloom, it still has its thorns.

25 - Introduction to the Short Story

25 - Introduction to the Short Story

Episode 25 tackles the subject of the short story. What is it (yes, of course, it’s short)? But there’s more to it than that. In this episode Barry defines terms and gives us a crash course in some of the most important, twentieth-century, writers.

In Episode 26 we’ll take a deep dive into Barry’s introduction to The Complete Short Stories of Robert Louis Stevenson.

One more thing: if you missed the writers Barry talked about in this episode, here’s a guide:

    Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)

    Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)

    Katherine Ann Porter (1890-1980)

    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1949)

    D. H. Lawrence (1880-1930)

    William Faulkner (1897-1962)

    Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)

    Richard Wright (1908-1960)

    Eudora Welty (1909-2001)

    Truman Capote (1924-1984)
