The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E9

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E9

Episode 9 of the 2022 season kicked off at 19h00 on 3 March on Rebel Rock Radio.  We started with ACDC to get the blood pumping and then followed with a fairly laid-back Wolfmother track called 'Mind's Eye'.  The whole show was pretty diverse, and included some heavy moments with Testament and Killswitch Engage then all the way back to the early  1969 ad 1976 for MC5 and UFO respectively.  We took a listen to 'Motor City is Burning' which was actually a John Lee Hooker song before Wayne Kramer fixed it up.

There was a nice little bit showcasing the talents of Alissa White-Gluz, starting with a track off Me and That Man's latest album New Man, New Songs, Same Shit Vol II.  The track was called 'Goodbye' and featured Alissa with Devin Townshend.  She sings it beautifully with clean vocals and it's an amazing contrast to the next track where she does her trademark death vocals in Arch Enemy.  That track was called 'Deceiver, Deceiver' off the soon-to-be-released Deceiver album.  Sounds like something out of Black Adder, Your Highness, Your Highness, Your Highness, Your Highness.  It made sense to round out this bit of the show with my current favorite female-fronted band In This Moment with Maria Brink on vox.

We had a short section where we went into C&W territory and played Buckcherry and Kid Rock both featuring Gretchen Wilson.  The big disappointment was messing up the transition between Jethro Tull's 'Moths' and Metallica's 'Moth Into Flame', do not adjust your set there was a technical problem which, in the interests of keeping it real, I haven't edited out.  Dan Patlansky's new album Shelter of Bones is excellent and we took a listen to 'Soul Parasite'.  The new Scorpions 'Rock Believer' went down very well as did listening to two of my favorite solos ever, one from KK Downing on 'Before the Dawn' and the other from the amazing C.C. de Ville on Poisons' track 'Life Goes On'.  Putting Pantera and Nickelback together was good fun, I thought it worked very well and we closed out with two heartfelt South African tracks, 'Sien Jou Weer' and Komma from Piet Botha & Jack Hammer and Francois Van Coke respectively.

Artists featured:  ACDC, Wolfmother, Sixx A.M. Rush, Slash feat Myles Kennedy, Testament, Killswitch Engage, MC5, UFO, Stone Sour, Def Leppard, Megadeth, Me and That Man, Arch Enemy, In This Moment, Black Label Society, Buckcherry, Kid Rock feat Gretchen Wilson, Jethro Tull, Metallica, Motörhead, Scorpions, Dan Patlansky, Samantha Fish, Diverted Disorder, Type O Negative, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, Sham 69, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Parkway Drive, Pantera, Nickelback, Rob Zombie, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, Francois Van Coke.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E41

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E41

Episode 41 of Season 4 contained 40 songs which is probably a record for the show.  It aired at 19h00 on 15 Oct 2021.  It was a fairly joyous affair, we had no load shedding and I got my car back from the garage, I think the mood permeated the show.

We kicked off with Black Spiders out of Sheffield and then checked out Craig Goldies, ex Dio's, band Ressurection Kings from their 2016 release of the same name.  We pulled in some big guns in the form of W.A.S.P.  and Skid Row and then took in two in a row with Chris Cornell on vocals. The early stuff was taken care of by Mott the Hoople, The Rolling Stones, and The Who.  There was some commentary around the fact that the Stones have dropped 'Brown Sugar' from their new live set supposedly because of pressure from the politically correct.  I played 'Some Girls' to highlight the Overton Window.  The Who sounded great with '1921' off Tommy.

We checked out the new Black Label society track off the new album Doom Crew Inc which will probably be called Doom Squad forever on TSORR.   A highlight for me was the new Joe Bonamassa release called 'Time Clocks'.  I had a bit to say about the amount of hate Joe gets these days and highlighted the fact that this song is an anthem.  Give it time to grow on you, Joe is amazing, I am grateful he keeps giving us an album a year where most artists keep us waiting 5 or more years.

We went to the UK for 4 tracks, especially enjoyable was Death of the Clown by Dave Davies.  SA music was taken care of by Blue Scream, L.A. Cobra, and The Color Blew.  Blue Scream, was a Tully McCulley project with Roger Kaye and Robin Gallagher involved.  You can read more about the band and Roger in The Story of Rock and Roll, he was a hell of a character.  We hit the home straight with the two Toms, Petty and Waits, and an almost country and western track from Lynyrd Skynyrd off the God and Guns album.  Special shout out to In Flames and Trivium for bringing the heavy.  The New Trivium In The Court of The Dragon is stellar.

Artists featured:  Black Spiders, Resurrection Kings, Smith / Kotzen, W.A.S.P., Skid Row, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, Jorn, Wolfmother, The White Stripes, Live, King Kobra, Mott the Hoople, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Whitesnake, Baton Rouge, Extreme, The Eagles, L7, The Pretty Reckless, Black Label Society, The L.A. Maybe, Loverboy, In Flames, Trivium, Joe Bonamassa, Seether, Oasis, Dave Davies, Stiff Little Fingers, The Dogs D’Amour, Blue Scream, L.A.Cobra, The Color Blew, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Halestorm, The Lazys

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E32

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E32

Episode 32 of Season 4 aired on 12 August 2021.  It was a pretty mixed show with a healthy dose of bands that don't get a lot of airtime.  I am talking about bands like Chrome Division, The Hitchers, Hell Fire, and The Gaslight Anthem.  There were more live recordings than usual, The Rolling Stones, Volbeat, Alter Bridge, and Slade were all live recordings.

There were also more new releases than usual, we checked out Dee Snider, Seether, Springbok Nude Girls, and Guns 'n' Roses.  Rock is alive and well even if Absurd by G 'n' R isn't quite what I had hoped for,  It's a grower.  The highlight of the show for me was 3 levels of heavy where we started with Skid Row's power ballad '18 and Life', moved into 3rd gear with Hell Fire, my new love affair our of San Francisco,  and ended in overdrive with SA metal monsters Sunken State.  Note that Hell Fire is not new, I just found 2 more albums I didn't have and I am Hell Fire befok.

The punk-ish stuff came courtesy of The Clash, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Sex Pistols.  We were light on Aussie and Germany and light on SA as well.  I am not sure quite how we ended up with a show so different from normal.  Anyway to quote Jack Hammer, "Thats how we roll".   Check it out, see what you think, comments welcome as always, 'til next time, have a jol.

Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, Brides of Destruction, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, Wolfmother, Ratt, Poison, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Gaslight Anthem, Chrome Division, Nevada Beach, Slade, The Rolling Stones, Gary Moore, Seether, MDFMK, The Hitchers, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Guns 'n' Roses, Volbeat, Alter Bridge, Buckcherry, The Clash, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sex Pistols, Smith/Kotzen, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Springbok Nude Girls, Aerosmith, Velvet Revolver, Skid Row, Hell Fire, Sunken State, Zakk Wylde, Judas Priest, Foo Fighters, Faster Pussycat

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E9

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E9

Quick and easy, episode 9 went out between 7 and 10 pm on 4 March 2021.  it was pretty uneventful other than near the end when the wifi failed and I had to reset everything.  It only affected the live audience and the podcast is fine, it's just an irritation that breaks the all-important rhythm.  I kicked off with Mr Big off their debut album and a track called ' Merciless', which showcases the amazing interaction between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan.  Next up two Rick Rubin productions 25 years apart, ZZ Top with " I Don't Want To Lose, Lose You'  and The Cult with ' King Contrary Man.  A highlight of the first third of the show was revisiting a band out of San Fransico called Hell Fire.

I played a couple of new tracks from Ricky Warwick, vocalist from the Black Star Riders, and Todd La Torre, vocalist from Queensrÿche. Both albums are very strong, it's been a good year for new releases so far.  Local stuff included Jasper Dan, The Burning & Piet Botha.  Punk was taken care of by The Distillers and Sex Pistols.  And then we had the usual classics by W.A.S.P., ACDC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, and Motörhead.  All in all a good mix of old, new, hard and soft, you should find something you dig amongst this lot.

Artists featured:  Mr Big, Scorpions, ZZ Top, The Cult, Wolfmother, Dio, Hell Fire, Jasper Dan, The Burning, Ricky Warwick, Todd La Torre, David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Marilyn Manson, Avenged Sevenfold, Halestorm, Machine Head, ACDC, Aerosmith, Circus of Power, Motörhead, Sex Pistols, The Distillers, White Zombie, Buckcherry, Walking Papers, Iron Maiden, Kiss, W.A.S.P., Bulletboys, Van Halen, The Pretty Reckless, Metallica, Mercyful fate, Piet Botha, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, the Darkness.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E3

The thoroughly enjoyable Episode 3 of season 4 went out live at 7 pm on the 21st of January 2021.  It was great right from the start, there were plenty of people tuned in and from Boston’s opening track ‘Don’t Look Back’ all the way through to Parkway Drive it was a cracker.  A listener highlighted the fact that at 21h21 we would be 21 hours, 21 minutes, 21 seconds of the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.  That created some pressure to find a suitable song to play at the time.  Even more so because before I found this out I had already played Green Day’s 21 Guns which would have been good.

We ran through a lot of 80’s metal;  Ratt, Mr Big, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Tygers of Pan Tang, Slaughter, and Keel and we checked out 70s giants The Sweet and the inimitable Ted Nugent.  The punk section was covered by the Sex Pistols and The Stranglers and Aussies were represented by Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, and The Lazys.  Special mention here for Cold Chisel, I played Bal-A-Versailles and the feedback was instant, “what a great track”!  Usually, I will get a comment about a song but literally, immediately, 4 comments came in about it.  Another crowd-pleaser was SA’s own The Black Cat Bones with ‘Don’t Wake the Scarecrow', again, to all-round approval, it’s a song that raises goosebumps every time.

Other than that we checked out the remarkable rebranding and rebuilding of the career of Ron Keel and we sorted out the 21 hours, minutes, and seconds thing by being able to say that at the exact time we were listening to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show and being blasted by a suitable bit of metal which was fitting in many ways.

Artists featured:  Boston, ACDC, Godsmack, Ratt, Mr Big, The Sweet, Hinder, Paragon, Green Day, The Rolling Stones, System of a Down, Skid Row, Lita Ford, Halestorm, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Wolfmother, Cold Chisel, The Lazys, Ted Nugent, Static-X, Seether, Black Star Riders, Mustasch, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Cougar, Metallica, Tygers on Pan Tang, Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Machine Head, Slaughter, Aking, The Diamond Dogs, The Black Cat Bones, Keel, Ron Keel Band, Parkway Drive

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E11

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E11

29 October 2020 at 7 pm was the date and time that Episode 11 of season 3 of The Story of Rock and Roll aired.   It was quite a show, unusually chatty and with only one little balls-up which I left in there in the interests of reality. Don't adjust your set after Iced Earth's 'Burning Times' it just takes me 30 seconds to twig that the mic wasn't on :-)  The joys of live radio.

It was a very lively show with plenty of people chatting on the Discord server and on Whatsapp.  We kicked off with 'Majestic' the traditional Journey opener but instead of more Journey, we cracked on with Metallica and Dio.  I started the local stuff early with another track off Johnathan Martin's amazing album Into The Nebulous Night.  Following up with Jack Hammer just made sense.  Punk happened in the form of The Stranglers and The Clash and there was plenty of classic metal and rock such as Iron maiden with 'The Trooper' and Judas priest with 'Hell Bent For Leather'.

The highlight for me was Bruce Springsteen with 'If I Was the Priest', as I said he's not called The Boss for nothing.  We also learned how to pronounce Bonamassa and took a listen to a track off his new album called 'Royal Tea'.   All in all, it was good fun and we had a lot of laughs.  Oh P.S. if any of you eve read this I'd like to know because I am not sure if I am wasting my time :-)

Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Journey, Metallica, Dio, The Cult, Social Distortion, Wolfmother, White Zombie, Johnathan Martin, Jack Hammer, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Audioslave, L.A. Guns, Bullet For My Valentine, the Clash, The Stranglers, Armored Saint, Joe Bonamassa, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M. Pearl Jam, Zakk Wylde, Bruce Springsteen, The Burning, Cold Chisel, Van Halen, Judas Priest. Jorn, Fokofpolisiekar, Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, the Black Crowes, Motörhead.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S3E3

S3E3 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show went on air at 19h00 on 3 Sept 2020.  Due to some technical issues, the first 40 minutes of the recording was lost so if you didn’t hear it live you’ll never hear that unique bit of radio history.  The show is getting smother and it’s just the microphone quality and level that is messing me around now.  The music is great no problem with that side of things.  The chat line into the show was alive and busy all the way through until 10 pm.  Rebel Rock Radio is picking up steam fast.

We kicked off with Def Leppard ‘Action Not Words’ off Pyromania but you will hear it from The Pretty Reckless with their track ‘Heaven Knows’.  That led us to ‘Rock is Dead’ by Marilyn Manson and then we checked out everything from Kreator to Dire Straits. The fun part came late in the show where I played “two bands that everyone hates but no-one can tell me why” in the form of Nickelback and Hinder.  The results were amazing, actually everyone loves both bands and the only explanation for Nickelback hatred was that Chad Kroeger is a bit of a dick.  I enjoyed the Ratt and Bon Jovi back to back and the trip to Seattle to check out Nirvana and Pearl Jam was great.   The Audioslave vs. Rage Against the Machine also go a good discussion going.  On the SA music side I was a bit slack and we only got to Jack Hammer and The Burning, but I will fix that next week.

Artists featured:  Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Kreator, Judas Priest, Rage Against the Machine, Hinder, Dire Straits, Kiss, Motörhead, Against Me!, Jack Hammer, Wolfmother, Marilyn Manson, Ratt, The Burning, Nickelback, Lynryd Skynryd, Joe Bonamassa & Jimmy Barnes, Boston, Böhse Onkelz, Nirvana, Ratt, The Clash, The Pretty Reckless, Stiff Little Fingers, Audioslave.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S2E1

The Story of Rock and Roll Season 2, Episode 1 went out live at midnight on 3 Dec 2020.  It was a great little show, a very decent way to start off the new decade.  God knows where we'll be in another 10 years, pretty sure podcasts like this will be like talking about cassette tapes.  It was great to be back in the midnight time slot, but it felt like it was over before we started.

The show kicked off with Krokus followed by a bit of Walking in the 'Shadow of the Blues'.  That was courtesy of White Snake and then we were off and running, pedal to the metal for the next two hours.  We dealt with the Ozzy Osbourne, deathbed or no deathbed issue, contemplated a 'Post American World' with Megadeth and checked out some Papa Roach.  It's hard to believe Papa Roach have been around for 20 years!  The highlight of the show for me was Slipknot with 'Opium of the People', hearing a song like that in the early of the morning is just so special.  The South African music was covered by Cutting Jade, The Color Blue and of course Seether.

Artists featured this episode include:  Megadeth, Joe Bonamassa, Cutting Jade, ACDC, Krokus, Ramones, The Color Blew, Whitesnake, Night Ranger, Metallica, Ozzy Obourne, Kid Rock, Seether, Black Label Society, Clutch, Wolfmother, My Chemical Romance, Thin Lizzy, Slipknot, John Mellencamp, Social Distortion, Papa Roach, Rainbow, Volbeat, Soundgarden & The Gaslight Anthem.

Episode #85 feat. Phil Jamieson of Grinspoon
When you think of iconic Australian bands from the late 90's, you can't go past Grinspoon who have been tearing up stages for the better part of the past 24 years (yes we're including the hiatus too, eat me!) and they're set to do it all again celebrating their BEST songs for a special edition vinyl which will coincide with a massive Australian tour and this week frontman Phil Jamieson joins the show to talk all about it.

Join podcast host Browny as he takes a look back at the band's two and a bit decades in the music industry and the pair reflect on where they've come from to what's next. Is there new music on the way? What hasn't Phil crossed off that "bucket list" yet and what about those rumours of him appearing on Australian Survivor last year? Were they true and would he consider it in future seasons? All that and more are covered in the pair' chat.

Plus, we go wayyyyy back into the Australian music scene and revive songs from bands you probably haven't heard in a long time (or at all) including classics from TISM, Gyroscope, Lash, The Vines, Happyland, Kisschasy, Frenzal Rhomb, Killing Heidi, Silverchair, Regurgitator, Bodyjar, 28 Days, Wolfmother and the brand new single from The Butterfly Effect even gets a spin too.

Ep24 of TSORR Radio Show took to the air on a chilly winters night in Midrand Johannesburg on 21 June 2019.  The thing I love about Radio is that things do not go as planned.  The State of the Nation address by the President of South Africa took place earlier that night and I started the show mentioning that instead of blasting into full throttle R ‘n’ R it would be more fitting to start with Running To The Edge Of The World, Marilyn Manson’s apocalyptic slow burning anthem of death and destruction.  The intro was great but it didn’t record so the show starts abruptly in the middle of Manson’s masterpiece.  Now you know why :-)

After that it is was full blast, up tempo, two fisted rock and roll with Dio.  For a while the song titles did indicate the heavy smog of politics, (Digging My Own Grave & The Joker & The Thief), but I cleared the air with Bowie’s Move On and then one last crazy bit of technical mayhem before settling in for a smooth run.  Check out the outro solo on James Reyne’s Ain’t it Always the Way, one of the best ever for pure emotion and the intersection between I Am The Walrus and Time is just great radio.

Among others the show featured The Winery Dogs, Stone Sour, Megadeth, Joe Jackson, Motorhead, David Bowie,  James Reyne, Marilyn Manson, Judas Priest, Joe Bonamassa, Wolfmother, Clutch, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Five Finger Death Punch, Dio, Anti-Flag, Steve Earle, Dokken, Jimi Hendrix, Stiff Little Fingers, In Flames.  The South African contributions came from The Black Cat Bones, Springbok Nude Girls and Jack Hammer.
