    Podcast Summary

    • Unexpected Challenges and AdversariesNever underestimate others based on appearance or perceived abilities, and stay focused and determined in the face of adversity. Just like Frank, always be prepared for the unexpected, like wearing a seat belt.

No matter how skilled or confident we may be, there are always unexpected challenges and adversaries in life. The story of Frank and Phoebe, a sharpshooter and a young girl, illustrates this idea perfectly. Frank, the best marksman in the country, was taken aback when a little girl challenged his title. He initially felt guilty, but soon found himself in awe of her exceptional shooting skills. Phoebe, despite her small size and age, proved to be a formidable opponent, leaving Frank impressed and humbled. This story serves as a reminder that we should never underestimate others based on their appearance or perceived abilities. Additionally, it highlights the importance of staying focused and determined in the face of adversity. In the real world, wearing a seat belt is one way we can prepare for the unexpected and make our imperfect world safer.

    • An unconventional partnership in the Wild WestDespite initial competition and humiliation, Frank Butler found happiness in assisting and managing Phoebe Moses' career, proving love and acceptance can overcome rigid gender roles and changing circumstances.

The unexpected partnership between Frank Butler and Phoebe Moses, despite initial competition and humiliation, led to a successful and harmonious collaboration in the Wild West show. Contrary to the popular narrative, Frank didn't resent Phoebe's fame or mope about his own fading celebrity. Instead, he happily assumed the role of her assistant and business manager, showcasing his love and devotion towards her. This unconventional relationship in the 19th century American West, where gender roles were rigidly defined, proved to be a powerful and enduring one. Frank and Phoebe's story is a testament to the power of love, acceptance, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

    • Recognizing and empowering women's talentsSupporting women's skills and allowing them to shine can lead to great achievements and historical impact.

The support and encouragement of women have played a significant role in the achievements of great men throughout history. This was exemplified by the story of Annie Oakley and her husband Frank Butler. While Frank was a successful sharpshooter, he recognized Phoebe Moses' exceptional skills and allowed her to take center stage, leading to her fame as Annie Oakley. This anecdote underscores the importance of recognizing and empowering women, allowing them to shine and make their own mark on history. The story of Annie Oakley serves as a reminder that everyone, regardless of their background or gender, has the potential to achieve greatness when given the opportunity and support.

'Solstice Sunrise' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar)
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 22, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION When the sun rises on Dec. 22 it will have emerged out of the longest, darkest night of the year. Cultures around the globe and across time have found ways to celebrate and respond to both the darkness and the returning of the light. Before much was understood about astronomy, ancient people feared that the sun was dying. Fear of the darkness and alarm over the lengthening nights and shortening days was something that called people to some kind of ritual or religious response. In religious parlance, darkness is often used as a metaphor for something negative. We hear about “going to the dark side,” or “dealing with the darkness within,” or “dark emotions,” or “dark moments in life.” But darkness has many positive attributes too: seeds grow in the dark, the womb that prepares life is dark, and nighttime is filled with many restorative blessings. With Sunday falling on the first day of lengthening sunlight, let us begin this day and season by paying special attention and honoring the darkness, even as we come more fully into the light.
