21: Benjamin Hardy | What to Do When Willpower Doesn't Work

    en-usMarch 26, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Understanding the influence of environment on behavior and personalityMindfulness, or awareness of context, can help us modify our environment to encourage desired behaviors and make lasting changes in our lives. Our environment shapes us, so by consciously shaping it, we can shape ourselves.

Our environment plays a significant role in shaping our behavior and, ultimately, our personality. As discussed with Benjamin Hardy on the show, psychologist Ellen Langer's work emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, which is the awareness of the context around us and how it influences us. By understanding this, we can focus on modifying our environment to encourage desired behaviors, rather than relying solely on willpower. This concept is particularly useful when trying to make lasting changes in our lives. Airbnb hosts, for instance, create welcoming environments for their guests, making their stays extra special and enhancing their overall experience. Similarly, by designing our own living spaces to promote healthy habits, we can make positive changes more easily. In essence, our environment shapes us, and by consciously shaping it, we can shape ourselves.

    • Our environment shapes our behavior and identityRealizing we can control our environment allows us to change ourselves biologically and behaviorally through immersion and firm decisions.

Our environment significantly shapes who we are and how we behave. According to social psychologist Ellen Langer, our perspective of a person is a product of their context, but who creates the context? When we realize we have the power to control our environment, we can change ourselves. Langer's research, as discussed in her book "Counterclockwise," demonstrated this by taking elderly men and immersing them in a 1950s environment, asking them to act as if they were younger men. The result? Biological transformations, including improved eyesight and dexterity. This research, along with advancements in epigenetics and neuroscience, shows that our biology is more fluid than fixed, and our behavior is largely shaped by our environment. This concept is illustrated through the idea of automaticity – behaviors that become subconscious with practice. Willpower, which requires conscious control, can't operate at the subconscious level. By making firm decisions, we can eliminate the need for constant willpower and operate more on instinct.

    • Strengthening Willpower through Decisions and Eliminating AlternativesIdentify a compelling 'why' and make a firm decision to eliminate the need for constant willpower exertion. Invest time, energy, or resources into a goal to solidify commitment and strengthen willpower.

Willpower is a finite resource and can be strengthened by making committed decisions and cutting off alternatives. The lack of willpower often stems from not having a strong enough motivation or reason for our actions. To build willpower, it's essential to identify a compelling "why" and make a firm decision, eliminating the need for constant exertion of effort. Additionally, investing time, energy, or resources into a goal can help solidify commitment and strengthen willpower. By understanding these principles, we can make decisions that lead to long-term success and reduce the reliance on willpower in everyday situations.

    • Investing in decisions for commitment and successInvesting in decisions can increase commitment, but consider potential risks and align environment for success. Informed decisions and gradual investment lead to better results.

Investing heavily in a decision can help increase commitment and find the "why," but it's important to consider the potential risks and align the environment for success. Willpower alone may not be enough, and blindly investing without proper evaluation can lead to disappointing outcomes. Instead, making informed decisions and gradually increasing investment can lead to better results. The speaker's personal experience of starting a blog after becoming a foster parent and investing in it was a turning point for him. However, it's crucial to ensure that the investment is feasible and aligns with one's financial situation. Ultimately, the key is to create the necessary conditions for success and avoid making hasty, frivolous decisions.

    • Investing in yourself leads to confidence and successBuying a domain, taking an online course, and becoming a craftsman can lead to confidence and success. Confidence is a byproduct of successful behavior, not the cause. Be cautious when trying to get others to invest in themselves or an idea.

Developing skills and investing in yourself can lead to confidence and success. The speaker shares her personal experience of buying a domain name and taking an online course, which taught her how to write articles and pitch them to publications. She emphasizes the importance of becoming a craftsman and developing skills before seeking passion. Confidence, she explains, is a byproduct of successful behavior, not the cause. The speaker also touches on the concept of harmonious passion and how it aligns with other areas of your life, leading to a healthy wave of success. However, it's important to note that investing in yourself requires preparation and readiness, and not everyone is ready for the investment. The speaker also mentions the potential for this concept to be used to manipulate people, and encourages a careful approach when trying to get others to invest in themselves or in an idea. She plans to discuss how our environment shapes us and how we can change ourselves by changing our environment in future conversations.

    • The power of shaping our environment for positive growthOne's environment significantly impacts their opportunities and behavior. Committed investment in creating a positive environment can foster growth and improve economic situations.

Our environment significantly shapes our behavior and opportunities in life. The example shared was about the experience of adopting three children from a disadvantaged background. The children grew up in poverty with neglectful parents, leading them to miss school and develop unhealthy habits. When the children came to live with their new parents, they faced numerous challenges, including adjusting to a new environment and learning basic skills like going to bed without medication. The parents' commitment and investment in their children's wellbeing played a crucial role in their adaptation and improvement. The study mentioned, Equality of Opportunities, highlights the significant impact of one's environment on their ability to improve their economic situation. This real-life experience illustrates the power of shaping our environment to foster positive behavior and opportunities for growth.

    • Childhood trauma's impact on a child's development and behaviorRecognizing and addressing childhood trauma can lead to significant improvements in a child's learning and growth. Creating a stable and supportive environment, prioritizing self-care, and investing in self-directed learning can help mitigate the effects of trauma.

Childhood trauma can significantly impact a child's development and behavior, leading to various diagnoses, and creating a challenging environment for learning and growth. The book "The Body Keeps the Score" explains how most disorders are linked to trauma, and in this case, the family's experience involved a child with intense anger issues, diagnosed with oppositional defiance disorder, among other diagnoses. The family's situation was so intense that they had to remove the child from public school and invest heavily in creating a stable and supportive environment for all three children. This included enrolling them in Montessori School, focusing on self-directed learning, providing one-on-one attention, and establishing consistent routines. The family also prioritized their own well-being and sleep, recognizing the importance of creating a healthy environment for themselves as well. The quote from Marshall Goldsmith, "If you do not create and control your environment, your environment creates and controls you," emphasizes the importance of taking control of one's surroundings to promote positive growth and development.

    • Our environment shapes who we becomeOur environment significantly influences our abilities and behaviors, and designing it to support our goals can help us rise up to our potential or fall to expectations

Our environment significantly influences who we are and what we become. According to the speaker, people often adapt to their surroundings, whether it's a family system or a challenging situation like a concentration camp. The historian Will Durant suggested that the average person's abilities could be doubled if their situation demanded it, which is known as the Pygmalion effect. This means that we tend to rise up or fall to the expectations of our environment, rather than acting according to our personal values. Therefore, it's crucial to be mindful of our environment and design it in a way that supports our goals and desired emotional states. If we don't control our environment, it can control us, and our behaviors shape who we are. So, the design of our environment is essential in shaping our choices and ultimately, who we choose to be.

    • The Impact of Environment on Our DevelopmentBe mindful of the environments we put ourselves in, as they can influence our behavior and identity unconsciously.

We often overlook the impact of our environment on our development due to cultural conditioning towards individualism and self-absorption. A story about friends Matt and Eric illustrates this well. Matt, who was on a promising life path, spent a few nights a week with Eric, who subtly influenced him to neglect his wife. The changes in Matt were incremental and unconscious to him, but noticeable to an outsider observing from a distance. This concept is called the fundamental attribution error, where we tend to blame people rather than situations for behavior. However, situational factors play a significant role in shaping who we become. It's essential to be aware of the environments we put ourselves in, as they can influence our behavior and identity unconsciously.

    • Our identity and behaviors are shaped by our environmentBeing aware of the impact of our surroundings and making intentional changes can help us transform who we are

Our identity and behaviors are not fixed, but rather fluid and shaped by our environment. Ignoring negative influences and failing to recognize the impact of our surroundings can lead to unwanted changes in our lives. Self-signaling, or evaluating ourselves based on our behavior, can help us consciously shape our identity. By changing our behaviors and environments, we have the power to transform who we are. The people and situations around us play a significant role in defining us, and it's essential to be mindful of their impact. The environment is not just the physical space but also the psychological one, including relationships and interactions. Recognizing this and making intentional changes can lead to self-improvement and personal growth.

    • Our environment shapes our identitySurroundings and situations impact emotions, thoughts, and abilities. Changing environment for personal growth can be challenging, but necessary. Disrupting relationships may be hardest part of process.

Our external environment significantly influences our psychology and identity. Who we surround ourselves with and the situations we find ourselves in shape our emotions, thoughts, and abilities. Changing our environment, even if it means cutting out negative influences or disrupting relationships, can be a challenging but necessary process for personal growth. The environment holds our identity together, and fundamental changes require adjustments to everything around us. The Alchemist emphasizes that once something evolves, everything must evolve around it. So, if you want to make a change, be prepared to disrupt your environment and potentially face internal conflict. The hardest part of this process is often disrupting relationships, as their identities are also tied to their connection with us. Ultimately, true change requires a holistic approach, affecting not only ourselves but also our surroundings.

    • Realizing the need for change comes from stepping out of routineStepping outside of routine can lead to personal growth and independence, but may require difficult decisions and challenges.

Personal growth and transformative ideas often come from stepping outside of your routine environment and allowing your mind to wander. The speaker's epiphany in Africa led him to realize that his parents' involvement in his business was holding him back from reaching the next level. This realization resulted in a difficult legal battle, but ultimately allowed him to assert his independence and become the man he wanted to be. Surrounding oneself with people who inspire and remind us of our future, rather than our past, can help us grow and develop naturally, without relying on willpower.

    • Embrace painful process for personal growthTo live a meaningful life, we must be open to change, even if it involves hardships and negative emotions. High-pressure environments can help us grow by fully engaging us and pushing us to succeed.

In order to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life, we must be willing to embrace the painful process of changing our relationships and environment. This perspective, known as eudaimonia, encourages us to pursue meaning, virtue, and personal growth, even if it means going through hardships and dealing with negative emotions. Creating high-pressure environments can help us achieve this goal by fully engaging us in our activities and pushing us to succeed. High-pressure environments can be found in various aspects of life, such as working out with a motivated trainer or striving for an Emmy nomination. By constructing our lives in this way, we can harness the eustress, or beneficial stress, that leads to growth and personal development.

    • Creating Forcing Functions for ProductivityScheduling, financial investment, clear expectations, and environment design are effective ways to create 'forcing functions' that boost productivity by reducing the need for willpower and increasing focus.

Creating a sense of accountability and external pressure can significantly boost productivity and focus. This can be achieved by scheduling and financially investing in your work, setting clear expectations with others, and designing your environment to eliminate distractions and reduce decision-making. The idea is to create "forcing functions" that make it harder to procrastinate or deviate from your goals. For example, Michael Jordan's trash-talking created pressure for himself to perform at a high level. Similarly, John Burke schedules his creation time and pays for studio sessions in advance. Designing software and hardware also use forcing functions to remove errors and make tasks simpler. By intentionally creating these conditions, we can minimize the need for willpower and make progress towards our goals more efficiently.

    • Using Forcing Functions to Boost ProductivityForcing functions like deadlines, performance-based pay, novelty, and self-imposed constraints can significantly enhance productivity and performance.

Creating forcing functions can significantly enhance productivity and performance. These can come in various forms, such as personal incentives, self-imposed deadlines, or novelty. The Millionaire Next Door highlights the importance of being paid based on performance as a powerful forcing function. Similarly, Parkinson's Law shows that work expands to fill the time given, so setting constraints can help focus efforts. Entrepreneur Dan Martell uses strategies like leaving his power cable at home and setting early pickups to create productive conditions. Novelty, as experienced by pianist John Burke, can also serve as a powerful forcing function by keeping one engaged and motivated to learn new skills. However, it's essential to maintain autonomy and control over these conditions to enjoy the process and allow for rest and recovery.

    • Optimizing our environments for successIntentionally arranging our lives and environments can help us focus, be more productive, and make significant improvements

Creating an optimal environment is not just a nice-to-have, but a necessary requirement for making significant changes in our lives. As discussed with Benjamin Hardy on the show, Shaun White's ability to excel in snowboarding for so long by balancing training with relaxation periods is a prime example of this concept. The environment we surround ourselves with plays a crucial role in shaping our behavior, personality, and even who we are at a fundamental level. The book "Willpower Doesn't Work" by Benjamin Hardy offers practical tips on how to optimize our environments to help us focus, be more productive, and punch above our weight. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a mom, or a career person, the principles in the book can be applied to almost anyone looking to make positive changes. By intentionally arranging our lives and environments, we can set ourselves up for success and make significant improvements, regardless of the circumstances that led us there. So, if you're looking to make meaningful changes in your life, consider the power of your environment and how you can harness it to your advantage.

993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny!

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

    • Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.
    • Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.
    • New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.
    • While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.
    • The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.
    • The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.
    • The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.
    • The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.
    • Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

    • Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.
    • Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.
    • Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.
    • Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.
    • Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.

What We Discuss with Robert Mazur:

    • How Robert, working undercover for US Customs and the DEA, posed as a money launderer to infiltrate Pablo Escobar's Medellin cartel and other criminal organizations.
    • Money laundering enables cartels to produce their most lethal product: corruption. Corrupt officials and governments facilitate drug trafficking operations.
    • Money laundering methods are highly sophisticated, involving legitimate businesses, secret codes, and multi-national operations to evade detection.
    • Banks and the global financial system need to change to combat money laundering effectively, with severe penalties for those involved in facilitating the flow of illicit funds.
    • Despite the risks and close calls, Robert continued his undercover work to gather intelligence and evidence against drug cartels until it became clear that the price his family was paying was not worth continuing.

    986: Porn | Skeptical Sunday

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.
    • Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.
    • Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.
    • While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.
    • While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

What challenges can the ocean help us meet, and what must we do to safeguard its treasures? The Underworld author Susan Casey dives deep for answers here!

What We Discuss with Susan Casey:

    • The ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and serves as the largest carbon sink on the planet, making its preservation essential for mitigating climate change.
    • The ocean is home to a fascinating array of creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions, such as iron-breathing microbes, glass sponges, and jellyfish that can reverse their life cycle.
    • Pollution, including plastics, chemical weapons, and nuclear waste, has severely impacted the ocean ecosystem, with some deep-sea creatures found to have plastic particles embedded in their organs.
    • There are an estimated three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, preserving valuable historical artifacts and information — such as the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek analog computer.
    • Exploring the ocean can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, Earth's history, and climate, providing valuable insights for addressing humanity's challenges — provided we safeguard this treasury of knowledge for current and future generations.
    • And much more...

575: Benjamin Hardy | Minding the Gap and the Gain

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of books about willpower, self-limiting beliefs, and teamwork. His latest offering (co-authored with Dan Sullivan), is The Gap and the Gain: The High Achievers' Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Success.

What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy:

    • If you measure your current self against your ideal (often chosen and defined by other people rather than yourself), you’ll never be happy because there will always be a gap. Unsuccessful people primarily focus on this (but we all wind up here sometimes).
    • If you measure your current self against your previous self — and notice the gain you've made between yesterday and today — you’ll experience happiness, satisfaction, and confidence. The most successful people understand this.
    • The difference between ideals (general, immeasurable, and constantly changing) and goals (specific, measurable, and time-bound) -- and why your ideals shouldn't be your benchmark for achievement, but merely the source from which your goals are inspired.
    • How you can weed out the arbitrary reference points with which you've been burdened by external sources and choose ones that are actually meaningful -- not just constant reminders of what you don't have.
    • How the increased confidence that comes from living in the gain allows you to set bigger and more imaginative goals to truly tailor the fabric of your own life.

703: Benjamin Hardy | How to Be Your Future Self Now

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of books about willpowerself-limiting beliefs, teamwork, and the pursuit of happiness. He returns to the show to discuss his latest offering: Be Your Future Self Now: The Science of Intentional Transformation.

What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy:

    • Prospection: rather than remaining tethered to a past over which we no longer have any control, we can visualize a number of possible futures and choose the course of action that guides us toward the one we find most desirable.
    • Most of us don't guide ourselves toward our most desirable future because we're too busy coping with the immediate concerns of daily life to clearly see the course that would take us there.
    • Are you committing yourself to avoidance-driven goals (like doomscrolling through the news) that serve to distract and knock you off course instead of approach-driven goals that nudge you toward your ideal future self (like learning more about your chosen career so you can do your best work and get promoted)?
    • Connecting with your long-term future self to make the decisions that speed you toward this person may require extra effort because humans are living longer than ever before and probably didn't evolve to think far beyond immediate survival.
    • Why it's important to envision your future self as an actual different person -- with different thoughts and motivations -- than you are today rather than just a later iteration of your current self.

365: Benjamin Hardy | How to Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of Willpower Doesn't Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success and Personality Isn't Permanent: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story.

What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy:

    • Why treating the results of a "scientific" personality test like Myers & Briggs or Enneagram as gospel is akin to trusting horoscopes to safely guide your life decisions -- inaccurate and potentially dangerous.
    • Hear the story about how Benjamin and his wife almost didn't get married because a personality test indicated they weren't an ideal match.
    • What looking back at the person you were 10 or 20 years ago should reveal about personality as an unfixed, malleable quality.
    • Why categorizing yourself or accepting labels leads to a tunnel vision of mindlessness that tends to accentuate the negative qualities you believe yourself to have.
    • You're always a work in progress -- you're never "finished." The person you'll be in 10 years may well be as different as you are from the person you were 10 years ago. So who do you want the future you to be?

19: Denise Shull | How to Turn Bad Emotions into Good Decisions

Denise Shull (@DeniseKShull) is a performance architect, ReThink Group founder, and author of Market Mind Games: A Radical Psychology of Investing, Trading and Risk, considered the Rosetta Stone of trading psychology.

"The worst decision you make is always from acting out some feeling you usually don't know you have." -Denise Shull

What We Discuss with Denise Shull:

    • Why understanding what we feel and why we feel it is a source of power for creating change and spurring transformation.
    • Why the avoidance mechanisms high performers often use to escape the influence of emotion on actions is counterproductive.
    • How feeling negative emotions can help us decode hidden information inside those emotions to help us perform at our best.
    • What we can do to recognize what we're feeling -- especially if we've regulated ourselves to feel nothing in the face of difficult decisions.
    • How a thesaurus can be used to keep us from making mistaken decisions.

Annie Duke (@AnnieDuke) is a World Series poker champion, Ante Up for Africa co-founder, public speaker, and author of Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts.

What We Discuss with Annie Duke:

    • Thinking in Bets isn't really about poker -- and neither is this episode.
    • Two things that determine the quality of our lives: the quality of our decisions and luck; we'll learn to understand the difference between the two.
    • Common mistakes we make when evaluating decisions, namely something called resulting -- which all of us do -- which leads to worse decision quality over time.
    • How we can become better belief calibrators, and why this helps us mitigate bias in our thinking and in our decision-making process.
    • How Annie and other world champion poker players have formed decision-making pods with one another to help them get better at decision quality and strategy, and how you can do the same.
