Can the Keto Diet Help With Menopause? - with Dr. Mindy and Dr. Anna Cabeca

    enMay 05, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • The Role of Oxytocin in Hormonal Balance for Menopausal WomenOxytocin release through simple activities, stress management, and a ketogenic diet support hormonal balance for menopausal women.

Balancing hormones, especially for menopausal women, is crucial for overall health and wellbeing. Doctor Anna Quebec, author of "The Hormone Fix" and "Keto Green 16," emphasizes the importance of oxytocin, a hormone released through simple activities like petting a dog, in regulating estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Stress management and a ketogenic diet are also key factors in maintaining hormonal balance, particularly during times of uncertainty like the beginning of a pandemic. Joining Doctor Mindy Pels' Reset Academy can provide support and guidance for implementing these practices and achieving health goals in a community of like-minded individuals.

    • Understanding Menopause: Hormonal Shifts and SymptomsMenopause is a 10-15 year hormonal decline starting around age 40, leading to symptoms like weight gain, brain fog, anxiety, depression, and mood swings. Optimize hormones through lifestyle changes like self-care, relationships, and a 'keto green' diet, plus checking urine pH and managing stress.

Women approaching menopause need to be aware of the hormonal decline that begins around age 40 and lasts for 10 to 15 years. This decline can lead to various symptoms, including weight gain, brain fog, anxiety, depression, and mood swings. It's essential to address this hormonal shift through lifestyle changes, including self-care, relationships, and nourishing the body beyond just food. Hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA decrease, but so does adiponectin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism. Cortisol and insulin also increase, leading to more significant stress and weight gain. By checking urine pH, managing stress, and adopting a "keto green" lifestyle, women can optimize their hormones and improve their overall quality of life during this critical hormonal transition.

    • Maintaining optimal health through hormonal balanceFocus on activities that boost oxytocin and reduce cortisol for optimal health. Enjoy pleasurable experiences, laugh, engage in hobbies, and practice pelvic floor exercises.

Our overall health is not determined by manipulating one hormone, but rather by focusing on the balance of various hormones, particularly insulin, cortisol, and the master hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin, which is secreted during activities we enjoy and increases feelings of love and connection, plays a crucial role in regulating cortisol and insulin. When cortisol levels are high for extended periods, it can lead to a dangerous situation with low cortisol and oxytocin levels, resulting in disconnect, isolation, depression, and burnout. To maintain optimal health, it's essential to prioritize activities that boost oxytocin and reduce cortisol. These activities include laughing, playing, doing things we love, and engaging in pleasurable experiences like orgasms. Additionally, pelvic floor exercises and hormone therapy can help improve quality of life as we age.

    • Managing stress and improving health during uncertain timesCompartmentalize thoughts, prioritize, engage in oxytocin-boosting activities, adopt a keto or keto green diet, intermittent fasting, decrease inflammation, manage cortisol levels for better health and insulin sensitivity

During stressful times, such as the current coronavirus situation, it's essential to compartmentalize and prioritize our thoughts. By setting aside specific time to address concerns and engaging in activities that increase oxytocin, like petting a dog or journaling, we can improve our mental and emotional well-being. Additionally, as women age, they become more insulin resistant due to declining estrogen and progesterone levels. Adopting a keto or keto green diet and intermittent fasting can help manage insulin resistance, leading to better health and increased insulin sensitivity. Decreasing inflammation and managing cortisol levels are also crucial in becoming more insulin sensitive and building resilience. Many women, especially those over 40, may not realize they can feel better, and shifting to a ketogenic diet can provide clarity and improve brain function.

    • Fasting and hormonal health in menopauseBalancing fasting with nutrition, alkalinity, and awareness of menstrual cycle is essential for women in menopause to maintain hormonal health while improving mental clarity and productivity through fasting and a ketogenic diet.

Fasting and a ketogenic diet can significantly improve mental clarity and productivity, but it's essential to balance it with adequate nutrition and alkalinity to maintain hormonal health, especially for women in menopause. The body's hormonal production shifts during menopause, and fasting too frequently can disrupt the production of progesterone and estrogen. It's crucial to listen to your body and be aware of your menstrual cycle to avoid overdoing it with fasting. Additionally, stress management is vital as the adrenal glands take over hormonal production when the ovaries stop functioning, and they can become overworked, leading to hormonal imbalances. A balanced approach to fasting, including intermittent fasting, keto green eating, and healthy feasting, is essential for maintaining metabolic flexibility and overall health.

    • Practicing Self-Care for Hormonal HealthIncorporate rest and relaxation, find joy, and join PowerSync 60 for a 60-day fitness program to prioritize self-care and hormonal health.

Taking care of ourselves, both physically and mentally, is essential for our overall wellbeing, especially during menopause and beyond. This includes practicing rest and relaxation, such as taking a day off each week or incorporating centering practices throughout the day. These practices can help reduce stress, improve mood, and even balance hormones. Additionally, finding joy and pleasure in simple things can also contribute to our overall happiness and sense of wellbeing. Dr. Mindy shares her passion project, PowerSync 60, a 60-day fitness program designed with hormonal health in mind, to help women incorporate these practices into their daily lives. By joining this community and using the code PS60PELS, individuals can access this program and take the first step towards prioritizing their health and happiness.

    • Alleviating Anxiety and Irritability During MenopauseDecrease stress, increase pleasure, master oxytocin, and supplement with progesterone, pregnenolone, vitamin D, and DHEA to navigate menopause more smoothly.

During menopause, women may experience anxiety and irritability due to the decline of progesterone, which increases the neurotransmitter GABA, known as the relaxing hormone. However, if a woman's lifestyle is stressful or if she has had adverse childhood experiences or PTSD, she may have a harder time with menopausal transition. To alleviate symptoms and raise progesterone levels, it's essential to decrease stress, increase pleasure, and master oxytocin through activities like walking on the beach, prayer, gratitude journaling, and supplementing with progesterone and pregnenolone. Additionally, vitamin D is necessary for progesterone and oxytocin to work optimally. DHEA, another anabolic hormone, is also important as it can make estrogen and testosterone downstream, but when depleted, it can lead to cortisol production instead. Overall, focusing on lifestyle factors, stress reduction, and hormonal supplementation can help women navigate menopause more smoothly.

    • Maintaining Hormonal Balance is Crucial for Health and Wellbeing during MenopauseOptimizing fat utilization, stress reduction, and quality sleep can improve DHEA levels, leading to increased testosterone production and reduced risk of postmenopausal diseases like cancer and heart disease.

Maintaining hormonal balance, particularly focusing on adrenal function and DHEA levels, is crucial for overall health and wellbeing, especially during menopause. Adrenal support through natural supplements and lifestyle habits like optimizing fat utilization, stress reduction, and quality sleep can lead to significant improvements in DHEA levels and, consequently, increased testosterone production. Neglecting hormonal balance during menopause can lead to postmenopausal diseases, including cancers and heart disease. By addressing hormonal imbalances and optimizing insulin control, women can significantly reduce their risk of these diseases and improve their quality of life as they age.

    • Honoring Our Bodies and Spirits for Optimal AgingThrough healthy lifestyle choices like the keto green diet, we can reduce inflammation, improve adrenal function, and balance hormones to optimally age and lower the risk of chronic diseases.

As we age, it's essential to honor our bodies and spirits through healthy lifestyle choices. The speaker shares personal experiences of loved ones who faced chronic diseases later in life, which could have potentially been prevented or delayed with proper care. The root causes of these diseases are often linked to inflammation, adrenal hypofunction, and hormone imbalance. Empowering our physiology through methods like the keto green diet can help us age optimally and reduce the risk of debilitating diseases. The speaker emphasizes the importance of addressing the underlying causes of diseases rather than just treating symptoms. Additionally, the speaker encourages us to embrace our aging process and recognize that our spirit doesn't age, even as our bodies do.

    • Supporting Elderly Health through Lifestyle ChangesAdopting a keto green diet and hormone therapy can significantly improve elderly health and longevity. Engage in mentally stimulating activities, assess individual needs for hormone therapy, and address infections or inflammation.

Supporting the health and wellbeing of the elderly through lifestyle changes, such as adopting a keto green diet and considering hormone therapy, can significantly improve their quality of life and longevity. This was exemplified by a man who went from using 120 units of insulin a day to only 20, and lived to the age of 91. Even during his later years, he continued to engage in mentally stimulating activities like Sudoku. However, when he would get sick or irritable, it could indicate an infection or inflammation that needed to be addressed. For women considering hormone replacement therapy or bioidenticals, it's important to assess their individual needs and circumstances. Younger women may benefit from detoxing and optimizing their hormonal balance, while older women may require more direct intervention to regulate their cycles and address symptoms like vaginal dryness or bladder leaks. Overall, the goal is to support physiological function and optimize behavior, rather than overriding it.

    • Maintaining sexual health involves a keto green lifestyle and hormonal therapyImplement a keto green lifestyle to decrease inflammation, balance hormones, kickstart metabolism, and detoxify the body. Use natural bioidentical hormones for assistance when needed, especially for estrogen and testosterone, and avoid oral estrogen over age 50. Transdermal methods of delivery are recommended for optimal results.

Maintaining sexual health involves a combination of hormonal therapy and a keto green lifestyle. The foundation is the keto green lifestyle, which includes decreasing inflammation, balancing hormones, kickstarting metabolism, and detoxifying the body. When symptoms arise, natural bioidentical hormones can be cycled in to provide assistance. It's important to use bioidentical hormones, especially for estrogen and testosterone, and to avoid oral estrogen over age 50 due to increased inflammatory markers. Transdermal methods of delivery, such as patches, creams, sprays, or gels, are better options than oral estrogen for physiological reasons. The author, Dr. Jolene Brighten, recommends her book "Keto Green Diet" for those looking to implement these principles and achieve great results in just 16 days. This approach not only helps improve sexual health but also promotes new beginnings and provides a fresh start without the psychological baggage of past failed resolutions.

    • Love is powerful medicineLove, especially self-love, is crucial for overall well-being and can be boosted through oxytocin production. Prioritize self-care and healthy choices for optimal health.

That love, specifically self-love, is a powerful form of medicine. Dr. Anna Cabeca emphasized this message during our discussion about her work in neurology and hormonal health. She noted that despite all the advancements in health and wellness, love remains the most important factor for our overall well-being. Dr. Cabeca also highlighted the significance of oxytocin, the hormone responsible for feelings of love and connection. She encouraged prioritizing self-love and emphasized that this reprioritization is a crucial aspect of the menopausal journey. Additionally, Dr. Cabeca shared her insights on nutrition and the importance of making healthy choices, such as eating whole foods, avoiding processed items, and focusing on good fats. She also recommended her upcoming book, "Mastering Oxytocin," which she believes will provide valuable information on this topic. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of love and self-care in maintaining optimal health.
