He was told he would not live many years without a transplant. As he began to use essential oils, his life began to change and improve quickly. He and Carrie, his wife, created Restore Hope Oils™ in 2020 to provide top-tier essential oils to practitioners and retail customers who sought better options and education for essential oils. Gavin collaborates with researchers, scientists, and wellness practitioners throughout North America.

As an Aromatherapist, he formulates the blends of Restore Hope Oils™, combining the latest research with accurate historical data. When he was most sick, he was told he had no options for care or treatment, and this continues to drive him to be a voice to let people know there are options available to bring greater balance to the body. Most of all, he loves to be with Carrie and their four children. They enjoy singing and dancing to the music when dishes or chores need to be done. Gavin and Carrie will continue to create products that support a healthy and hopeful lifestyle while educating on the power of nature through essential oils and other plant-based supplements.

#285 Why Intermittent Fasting Works with Dr Jason Fung

#285 Why Intermittent Fasting Works with Dr Jason Fung

CAUTION: This podcast discusses fasting and its advice may not be suitable for anyone with an eating disorder. If you have an existing health condition or are taking medication, always consult your healthcare practitioner before going for prolonged periods without eating.

When was the last time you had something to eat? Was the food consumed at a mealtime, or 'just because'? My guest today has a simple but powerful message that I believe could revolutionize your health. Dr Jason Fung is one of the world's foremost experts on intermittent fasting. He practices in Canada as a kidney specialist and in 2012, he co-founded America's first intermittent fasting clinic. He's published multiple international bestselling books and he runs a global online coaching program called Intensive Dietary Management. Dr Fung also works tirelessly to communicate simple messages with the public on his YouTube channel.

We begin this conversation by discussing how many unscheduled opportunities to eat there are in modern life. These days, it is normal to eat at your desk, in meetings, on public transport or even on the sofa at home. Yet, just a few decades ago, such habits would have seemed very out of place. Jason explains that the idea that it’s good to graze all day is unscientific and damaging – our bodies can only draw on our fat stores for energy when we’re not in a fed state. Our default should be not eating, with two or three meals planned in short windows over 24 hours. Instead, schools, workplaces and places of leisure are designed around opportunities to snack and for many of us, it's causing a host of problems.

Jason goes on to talk about why he believes that calorie counting isn’t the answer when it comes to getting your weight and health in check and why some foods are more fattening than others, even if they're equal in calories. Jason's approach is to encourage all of us to switch to what he calls ‘the right foods’ – whole, unprocessed foods, low in sugar and refined carbohydrates, which will not stimulate large amounts of a hormone called insulin. As a result, Jason says you'll be less hungry, less inclined to eat constantly and return your hormones to the way they're designed to work.

Jason is also a big fan of intermittent fasting for the right person and explains easy ways to practise it, the common mistakes and misconceptions, and reveals why the ‘rules’ aren’t as strict as you think. Whether you're already a fan of intermittent fasting, whether you're in the dark or whether you are someone who has yet to be convinced, I'd urge you to give this conversation a listen. Jason is a fantastic communicator who's helped countless people improve their health and well-being.

#133 Food Addiction with Dr Nick Fuller

#133 Food Addiction with Dr Nick Fuller

Can we be addicted to food? This is quite a hot topic and one that is more relevant than ever. On the one hand we have food companies and respected scientists telling us that food addiction is a myth. Because we don’t see people smashing windows or stealing money from loved ones to fund a ‘hamburger habit’, the concept of food addiction is farcical.

On the other hand, recent work on food use disorders has demonstrated that the same neurobiological pathways implicated in drug abuse also modulate food consumption.

And if we consider Obesity costs the UK £47bn a year and has the second largest impact on the economy of 3% GDP  (after smoking), we really should properly discuss whether food addiction is real and plays a role.

On the  podcast  today  we have the amazing obesity researcher Dr Nick Fuller who brings together a diversity of skills having held positions in both the industry and academic sectors. His current position as commercial and industry program leader within the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney involves working with government and industry to identify and develop cost-effective treatments for the treatment and management of obesity and related physical and mental health disorders.

He is  also the author of three best-selling books on the Interval Weight Loss program and Nick's work has resulted in policy change in the field of obesity and metabolic disease and his research has been published in The Lancet and JAMA.

    Today we talk about:

    • What addiction entails
    • How the brain shapes food choice
    • The body’s regulation of food intake which involves  a complex set of peripheral and central signaling networks.
    • The impact of environment, stress and psychological state in food choice
    • Practical tips to avoid or rewire food choice
    • How to start new behaviours and how long it will take

Can the Keto Diet Help With Menopause? - with Dr. Mindy and Dr. Anna Cabeca

Can the Keto Diet Help With Menopause? - with Dr. Mindy and Dr. Anna Cabeca

After the age of forty, we have to change our lifestyle to meet our declining hormones. Things that we got away with in our thirties don’t work for us anymore.

Dr. Anna Cabeca is committed to supporting women so that they can thrive physically, emotionally, sexually, and even spiritually as they go through the natural and inevitable life shift of menopause.

Dr. Anna Cabeca has spent years developing and perfecting a complete suite of life-changing products and programs. Everything Dr. Anna develops is part of her daily routine and based on exhaustive research and the never-ending quest to find solutions that help women reclaim their vibrancy, sexuality, health, and happiness.

     In this podcast, we cover:

    • How the hormone hierarchy works
    • How women can help their insulin resistance
    • Why women get more Alzheimer’s than men
    • How to know if you’re fasting too often
    • Why you should take one day off a week
    • How disease forms more for women in their post-menopausal years
    • The benefits of testosterone

There are ways we can THRIVE through menopause. It takes more than hormones to fix your hormones.

Did you know we have a hormonal hierarchy?

The master hormone is oxytocin – it is secreted when we laugh, play, and do things that we love. Increasing oxytocin will regulate cortisol. Having an orgasm is one of the best ways to increase oxytocin. Pleasure!! Part of Dr. Anna’s checklist is having an oxytocin checklist each day. What are you doing to improve joy every day?

As estrogen declines, we become more insulin resistant. We help our insulin resistance by living a keto lifestyle. The more insulin sensitive we become, the better quality of health we have. Anything that creates inflammation is going to develop wrinkles. We have to reverse our insulin resistance! It doesn’t matter how old you are; we can see an improvement to your sensitivity – it’s powerful.

Why do women get more Alzheimer’s than men?

The brain will use glucose or ketones. Using ketones in the brain is not hormone-dependent. Shifting to ketones will give us clarity. Dr. Anna wouldn’t have been able to write her book without a keto lifestyle. Using ketones instead of glucose will keep you mentally alert.

Take one day off a week.

God intended us to rest one day a week. We need to refill our tanks with rest. How do we incorporate this into every aspect of our life? Maybe you can bring a centering and grounding practice into your daily routine. It can even be something as simple as having a ten-minute puppy break. Especially at menopause, having a quality of life is better than any pill we can take.

If you want to balance your hormones, you need to calm yourself down and get your stressful life at bay. It is powerful when you realize that rest is necessary. Guess what happens when we rest? All the anxiety and those sleepless nights will go away.

Think of something that makes you smile. Visualize it. Now, take some deep belly breaths. Feel joy. This is an excellent resetting tool.

    Post-menopausal diseases

As we get older, we have to empower or physiology even more. Our spirit does not age. We need to age optimally. After menopause, we face chronic debilitating diseases – they are all related to insulin resistance. We need to help our insulin resistance by living a keto lifestyle.

If Dr. Anna had one message for the world is would be that self-love is medicine.

“The Iceman” Wim Hof On Why Breath is Life, Cold is God & Feeling is Understanding

“The Iceman” Wim Hof On Why Breath is Life, Cold is God & Feeling is Understanding
Today's guest will challenge everything you thought you knew about human potential and leave you with one indelible, ineradicable truth: We are all sitting atop vast reservoirs of untapped, almost superhuman capabilities. Meet Wim Hof, aka The Iceman. A Dutch-born world record holder, adventurer, daredevil and human guinea pig, The Iceman is best known for his preternatural ability to withstand extreme cold. Perhaps more significant and compelling is his experimentation and experience with specific and teachable breathing techniques. Rooted in the ancient yogic tradition of pranayama and canonized for a modern audience as The Wim Hof Method, Wim asserts that he can “turn his own thermostat up” and consciously activate his sympathetic nervous system by using his mind through yoga. This may sound far-fetched. But get a grip on some of the crazy things this holder of more than 20 world records has accomplished: * shirtless adorned in nothing but shorts, Wim scaled above death zone altitude (22,000 ft) on Mount Everest; * barefoot, shirtless and again in nothing but shorts, Wim completed a full marathon above the polar circle in Finland; * he summited Kilimanjaro in less than 2 days, again in nothing but shorts; * above the polar circle, he swam a world record 66 meters under a meter of ice; * he can sit in an ice bath for almost 2 hours; and * in 2011, he ran a full marathon in the Namib Desert without water But there's more. Under doctor supervision, In 2011 Wim voluntarily allowed himself to be injected with a poisonous E. coli endotoxin certain to make any human being very ill. The idea was to demonstrate that by using his meditation and breathing techniques he could effectively control his autonomic immune system response and nullify any deleterious health implications. Wim did not get sick. Beyond his countless feats of incredulity, he’s a long-time vegetarian who — for the last 30+ years — has refrained from eating any food before 6pm. All of this is seemingly insane. But Wim is hardly a carnival sideshow act — the physical stunts merely a means of attracting scientific community attention for purposes of study and documentation. Ask Wim and he will tell you that he is nothing special. He declares his feats replicable and his methods teachable — a curriculum that holds the potential to unlock a battery of human superpowers that extend well beyond extreme temperature tolerance to include control over a wide array of sympathetic nervous system and metabolic ‘reptilian brain' functions previously thought to be beyond conscious manipulation. Case in point? After a mere 4 days of instruction, Wim led a group of brave, volunteering students through his endotoxin exposure experiment (again, under doctor supervision and scientific observation). Not one of them got sick. And he now routinely takes groups of students – most of which you would characterize as non-athletes — up Kilamanjaro. In nothing but shorts of course. An absolutely fascinating guy with charm and charisma for miles, my conversation with Wim is less about human biology than it is about belief systems. It's an exploration of dormant biological and mental potential. It's about yoga, grief, depression, change and the nature of consciousness. And it's about the ever expanding event horizon of human potential that should push and challenge and nudge you out of your comfort zone to call into question the unnecessary limits we self-impose upon ourselves daily. Enjoy! Rich
