Cultivating Conscious Relationships: Julie Piatt On The Evolution Of Long-Term Love

    enNovember 02, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Evolving relationships and finding intimacyAfter significant life changes, giving permission to evolve relationships brings new possibilities and opportunities for growth and intimacy.

Transformation and intimacy are essential in long-term relationships. Everyone goes through pivotal moments in life, and giving ourselves permission to recommit and redefine relationships brings new possibilities. Julie Paya, a frequent guest on the podcast, shares her experiences of evolving her relationship with her husband Rich Roll after their children grew up. They discuss the importance of getting to know each other in new ways and the opportunities and fears that come with it. After 23 years of marriage, they continue to find intimacy and growth in their relationship. This conversation also includes special offers from Julie's company, SriMu, for RRP listeners.

    • Raising children presents an opportunity for couples to evolveCouples can either deepen their relationship or risk decay when raising children, requiring vulnerability and honesty

Raising children can put a strain on a relationship, making it logistical and transactional. However, this does not define the entirety of the relationship. Instead, it presents an opportunity for couples to recommit and evolve, transcending old agreements and expectations to make room for something new. This process can be terrifying as it forces individuals to step out of their comfort zones and offer deeper levels of honesty and sharing. But, if couples choose to stay the same, they risk decay and eventual separation. Ultimately, the choice is to either move towards each other or away, and the decision to deepen the relationship is a scary but exciting prospect.

    • Investing in meaningful rituals and being present in relationshipsDeepening connections and discovering new aspects of your partner requires intentional effort and presence. Embrace friction and differences for potential growth.

Investing in meaningful rituals and being present in relationships can help deepen connections and lead to new discoveries. The speaker shares a personal experience where they were moved by the raw, unfiltered version of their partner after a challenging experience, and they expressed a desire to know each other at that level. They acknowledged that even after 23 years of being together, there may still be aspects of themselves they haven't shared. The importance of being present and engaging in the relationship rather than letting it become a routine was emphasized, as was the potential for continued growth and discovery. The speaker encourages couples to embrace the friction and differences that can lead to alchemy and new frontiers in their relationships.

    • Embrace vulnerability for true intimacyTo foster deep connections, embrace vulnerability, accept each other's flaws, and focus on understanding and meeting each other's needs.

True intimacy lies in embracing vulnerability and accepting each other's flaws. Both individuals in a relationship have a need for privacy and autonomy, but it's essential to prioritize understanding each other's needs and anticipating how to meet them. Fear of being truly known can stem from a belief of being fundamentally broken and unlovable, but it's in the knowing and accepting each other's deepest aspects that true intimacy and love can flourish. A relationship requires effort to elevate the way we interact, and it's essential to focus on celebrating each other and creating a comfortable, non-judgmental space. Ultimately, embracing the fear and allowing ourselves to be seen in our rawest form is where the treasure of a deep, meaningful connection lies.

    • Understanding Partner's PerspectiveBe open about personal quirks and listen to understand your partner's unique perspective to deepen intimacy in a relationship.

Open communication and understanding are key to deepening intimacy in a relationship. The speaker in this conversation shared an experience where her partner's seemingly odd behavior of buying separate theater seats led her to a deeper understanding of his unique perspective and needs. This realization brought them closer together and increased their intimacy. For those seeking to deepen their own relationships, the speaker suggests being open about personal quirks or habits, and being willing to listen and understand your partner's perspective. This kind of communication can lead to a greater sense of connection and intimacy in the relationship.

    • The importance of growing and deepening relationshipsCommunication, presence, and commitment help navigate challenges in relationships. Giving permission to recommit and redefine relationships is essential, as fear should not hold us back from truly knowing and being known by our partners.

The desire to grow and deepen a relationship is crucial. Communication and being present with each other are key elements in navigating challenges. The speaker and her partner have managed to stay together despite their differences and the external influences of the world around them. They have found value in their unique experiences and have committed to continuing their journey of discovery. Giving ourselves permission to recommit and redefine relationships is essential, as the only way out of the unknown is through it. Fear should not hold us back from truly knowing and being known by our partners. The speaker's relationship with her partner has been profound, and she values their presence and willingness to grow together. In essence, the true purpose of a relationship is to know each other deeply and to be known in return.

    • From abandoned Sears facility to vibrant community hubTransformed an old Sears facility into a thriving arts and culture center, prioritizing community over revenue

The Crosstown Concourse in Memphis is more than just a magnificent structure; it's a symbol for a future Memphis and a testament to the power of vision and collaboration. Originally an abandoned Sears and Roebuck distribution facility, it was transformed into a thriving community hub by Staley Cates and Todd Richardson, who saw its potential as a beacon for arts and culture. Today, it houses a museum-quality art space, performance theater, recording studios, schools, healthcare facilities, and various businesses. Despite the odds, they created a nonprofit space that prioritizes the arts and community, rather than maximizing revenue. With a strong focus on creativity, collaboration, and social impact, the Crosstown Concourse is a shining example of what can be achieved when individuals come together with a clear vision for the future.

    • Unexpected connections in a new communityMoving to a new place can bring unexpected connections and opportunities, leading to remarkable experiences.

Community support and new beginnings can lead to remarkable experiences. The speaker shared her journey of moving her business to Memphis, Tennessee, feeling uncertain about making connections in a new place. However, she was pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome from local business leaders and the community. The opening of her cafe, SriMu, coincided with a new moon solar eclipse, adding to the magical feeling of starting anew. The speaker also discovered a deep connection between Memphis, Tennessee, and Memphis, Egypt, with various references to ancient Egypt in the city. Additionally, she met a filmmaker, Craig Brewer, whose office was located right above hers in the Crosstown area. These unexpected discoveries and connections made her feel honored and excited about her new chapter in Memphis.

    • Navigating Challenges in a New LocationStarting a business as a family is effective but unsustainable as it grows. Adapting to new regulations and environments leads to improvements and growth.

Moving a business to a new location, especially one where you don't know many people, comes with unexpected challenges. The entrepreneur in this discussion learned that leading the company like a family in its early stages was effective but not sustainable as it grew. She also discovered that the business required a higher level of responsibility and stability to thrive in its new location. One significant challenge was navigating regulations, such as proving product expiration dates and obtaining organic certification. However, these hurdles led to improvements, like hiring a food scientist and implementing gold standards for batching and recall. Despite the obstacles, the business continued to grow, releasing new products like a butter and a dessert called the Maclay cake. The entrepreneur's decision to add new SKUs is based on the quality of the products and the market demand. Overall, the experience of moving the business to Memphis taught the entrepreneur valuable lessons about leadership, responsibility, and the importance of adapting to new environments.

    • Managing product offerings and brand identityFocus on a streamlined collection of high-quality products and foster community to build a strong brand identity

Carefully managing product offerings and maintaining a strong brand identity are crucial for business success. The speaker, a cheese company owner, shared her experience of expanding too quickly in the past and the negative impact it had on her brand. She emphasized the importance of focusing on a streamlined collection of high-quality products that truly represent the brand. Additionally, the speaker highlighted the importance of community in her business model and how it sets SriMu apart from other companies. From a business perspective, Memphis was chosen as the location for SriMu due to its cost-effectiveness and the unique community atmosphere of Crosstown Concourse. The company plans to foster this community through subscriptions, special offerings, and integrating spiritual elements into their brand.

    • Building a community through subscriptionsEngage customers beyond sales by sharing valuable, thematically relevant content, building trust and loyalty, and turning them into brand advocates

Building a community through subscriptions allows businesses to connect with their audience on a deeper level, beyond just sales. Instead, it's about sharing valuable, thematically relevant content that resonates with consumers' interests and values. This approach builds trust and loyalty, turning customers into brand advocates. The speaker's personal example involves her food company, where she and her team send out newsletters filled with lifestyle content, raising awareness about various causes, and even sharing dreams and plans for future projects. This approach not only strengthens the community but also allows the business to align with its audience's passions and make a positive impact.

What if the answer isn’t to do more? What if the answer is to want less?

I’ve always believed that subtracting from your life can produce better results than trying to add something. Generally, quitting a bad habit, or a bad mindset, or anything distracting, will have a bigger impact on your life than learning more.

This episode covers a few things I think we should stop doing to live a better life. Enjoy.
